Mayo Football Podcast bonus episode: Boyler sets the scene for Sunday

The clash of Mayo and Tyrone in Castlebar on Sunday has attracted a lot of attention this week as Kevin McStay’s team try to get their season up and running at the third attempt.

Mike and Colm Boyle sat down on Friday evening (aka Valentine’s) to look at the Mayo team that was announced and to talk through some of the possible scenarios that might play out.

Boyler also chats about how management and players need a performance as much as a result and everything from training sessions to David Gough’s documentary features too!

This bonus podcast episode is now online and is available to our club members on Patreon – it’s HERE. To get access to this show and to all our other great content, for as little as €1 a week, join the club HERE.

The Mayo Football Podcast has partnered with EBS — The Mortgage Masters — this season.

EBS are looking to hear from Mayo supporters who are living at home or abroad who might be looking for some mortgage advice.

Just noticed that the Mayo footballers named only the starting XV in their team announcement but the Mayo hurlers named the XV and the bench. Both teams play on Sunday.

When will Mayo GAA stop this stupid act of not naming the subs for the footballers? It's a slap in the face of the supporters. We are one of the only counties that persist with this nonsense. It's well past time that McStay is told to cop on and just name the bench. Lads are busting their gut in training to even make the 26, why not reward them with public knowledge that they have made the cut? Is there even any edge that Mayo gain by not naming the bench?

Agree with OnTheFence. It's a totally daft policy and should not be acceptable to Mayo supporters. Remember we the fans that support the financing of all Mayo teams and we could vote with our airgead!
Also, what's the point of naming subs like Eoin O"Donoghue and others if they don't get playing time? In my opinion there are two defenders on the team that need to be given a rest and give 2 other defenders a chance!
What is the definition of insanity re the Mayo team selection- picking the same team over and over again and not trying something else!

I do appreciate all our panel are making huge efforts and sacrifices but for God sake let's give all panel members a bloody chance.

Galway named their full panel---a very strong one.
Philly Mc Mahon has a good article on the Independent on how GAA games are loosing traction in the media.
Who would be a journalist with type of bull not naming panel.
Tyrone have named their full panel for the league.
Why sponsor a team that avoids the media?

Sean Burke says:

The GAA supporter is treated with little respect overall tbh , from the distribution of all Ireland final tickets to the match day experience, it’s losing its appeal , I’ve been beating this drum for a couple of years now . As for the top secret bench naming by Mayo , you wouldn’t mind if we were going to spring someone like oisin Mullen in a top secret op for a big game in championship or something along them lines , Cillian returning etc but it’s boring , mundane horse manure cause we never have a trick up our sleeve

G

Glorydays says:

February 15, 2025 at 12:59 pm

If we were to spring Oisin Mullin inself we would probably play him in goal

R

C

Clare says:

February 15, 2025 at 3:45 pm

Yeah I don't get the not naming of subs either doesn't make one difference! Just name them for gods sake!

Regards Oisin Mullin I still think he will back next year..!

A

Anne-Marie says:

Couldn't agree more OnTheFence. If that's the extent of the guile Mayo management have under their belt it doesn't say a whole lot. Let them just stop their messing and name the squad.

And while they're at it they might consider giving a few more of the subs a bit of game time. How any team in this environment is not making maximum use of their bench is beyond me.

Sean, you're spot on. At a county level and at a national level supporters have always been treated as a bit of an inconvenience, and it's getting worse. As for members of the media, bafflingly, they are regarded as a nuisance rather than an asset.

K

Keeping the faith again! says:

February 15, 2025 at 4:10 pm

Completely agree OnTheFence. When you see the county hurling team announce the full panel, it makes it even more annoying. I would love if Mike or Rob (or anyone to be honest!) who gets access to Kevin McStay after the match tomorrow, to just ask him straight out, "Why do Mayo not release their full panel on a Friday evening?"

I genuinely cannot comprehend why only ourselves and Dublin don't name the 26 nowadays from what I can see. It was the same under James Horan and Stephen Rochford too. The question NEEDS to be put to management! We won't get any answers just speculating how daft it is here!

T

Tubberman says:

February 15, 2025 at 4:45 pm

I don't see any big advantage in not naming the full 26, but I also don't see why it's a big deal for supporters if it's not named. God knows, there's bigger problems with the senior team at the moment than if the subs are named 3 days in advance.

G

Gizmobobs says:

February 15, 2025 at 4:53 pm

Agree, although the team named is more often than not nonsense with several changes before throw in. Mind you tomorrows starting team could be the named one for a change!

Could also stop selling programmes at Mayo games as usually not worth paper written on. Mitchels get the money for them though I think so not likely to happen.

It doesn't put me up or down, in reality. But it lacks respect to fans and players IMO.

Y

yew_tree says:

Mayo have PR and media men involved and can’t communicate with supporters as to who is in the match day squad. It’s a league game, what’s the big secret? Load of crap.

Lets see what tomorrow brings- not too hopeful. Surely work will have been done on scoring, a defensive plan, new rules and show a bit of fight. Crazy crazy that we have no set training facilities. Boyler summed it up well.on podcast. At least Galway are making an effort to fundraise in New York (unlike us). John Fogarty's column earlier in the week nailed it.

7 weeks till the Connacht championship throws in , it’s hardly the ruination of a team to be tipping along well now . Game is evolving by the minute , need to be aware timeframes are not of old . It will take years to see a trend .

Derry well back in this now

K

Km79 says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:23 pm

Derry should be ahead by now. They have butchered so many attacks. Galway haven’t even scored in over 20 minutes and are still ahead

K

Km79 says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:34 pm

That was some capitulation
One score in second half ? Maybe two
Derry blew it
Better for us they didn’t win !

T

February 15, 2025 at 6:39 pm

There'd be some reactions here if Mayo did what Galway have just done!

E

Exile says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:39 pm

Agreed on 2 point free.
If you can get a good press on from the forwards that could get teams a lot of joy come championship - we used to be very good at that

1

1985 says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:45 pm

Galway looked very ordinary in second half when put under pressure which we failed miserably to do but again you need to win the midfield battle and we won’t win many of them with the personnel we persist with in that area

S

Sean Burke says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:46 pm

Galway won the first half , Derry won the second half , there was a strong wind . Both teams played well with the wind . Positives for both sides .

C

Chesneychet says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:50 pm

Poor second half, like we just stopped playing. As I said here after the Mayo game that we are not playing as well as people think and Mayo were not as bad as was being suggested here when those 2 pointers are taken into consideration. Joyce has plenty of work to do.

F

FrostTHammer says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:54 pm

Agree with Exile. We used have the fiercest press around. We've missed Cillian in that area, he was one of the best around.

J

Jr says:

February 15, 2025 at 6:58 pm

I thought that the Galway full back was poor.
New rules will catch out lots of full back line players, with no proper cover

O

Outside of the Boot says:

February 15, 2025 at 7:07 pm

Hoping for good performance tomorrow but untill we get Flynn Carney and hopefully Loftus back to play around middle zone, we're at nothing .

AOS gives another option at fullforward but credit to Frank Irwin he's done well , maybe let ROD out the field and play Towey, Aos and Irwin inside.
Cillian Mchale due a start too and think there's alot to him as physically can mind himself has enough pace and power and super accurate.

If he starts those two lads centerfield again it's very hard to see us having any control.
Reid is a modern player and with right support will be an asset, Nearys going well too so positives to take but untill we get a bit of power back into team very hard to see us handling the top teams

T

Tuamstar says:

February 15, 2025 at 7:10 pm

Delighted with that result, a point away to Derry is good going. Flawless first half but then poor second means loads to work on..
Don't want Galway getting ahead of ourselves..
5 points means nearly safe from relegation.

Galway’s fancy boys didn’t look up for the fight when it was put up to them. Kelly, Walsh, Finnerty nowhere to be seen in the 2nd half.
I had to laugh with the Derry point that was clearly wide.

The Dubs won't reel Kerry in with single pointers,it will be interesting to see will they throw off the shackles and shoot from distance. I don't think Kerry will cough up goal chances.

N

Nephin says:

February 15, 2025 at 8:15 pm

Paddyjoe. I saw it during the week that it was a tweak to the rules. Possibly after watching the antics of Gleeson for Galway against us.

S

Sean Burke says:

February 15, 2025 at 8:16 pm

Like the Derry game earlier you’d expect a different second half with the wind factor .

T

TsuDhoNim says:

February 15, 2025 at 8:19 pm

@Paddyjoejohntom: The rule hasn't changed. The 20 seconds is part of a directive, came in post R2 and pre R3, after watching how R1 & R2 went.

Was very under the radar. A few tried raising it, but not nearly enough focus from GAA/FRC/media in general.

C

Clare says:

February 15, 2025 at 8:22 pm

Dubs will bounce back come 2nd half with the wind factor as others have said.

K

M

Moose79 says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:15 pm

A draw would have been nice from our point of view. I didn't give us any hope tomorrow but the few missing lads for tyrone give us a slim chance. If we don't take advantage of the wind again, we are goosed..

Kerry are still fairly average..
The two point shooters are invaluable to teams..

T

TsuDhoNim says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:18 pm

I've watched a fair few games with O'Dell (Templeogue, DCU or Dublin).... I had absolutely no idea he had those 2 pointers in the locker. Gale or not. Outstanding shooting.

S

Sean Burke says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:19 pm

Physicality in both games was way up on what we can offer or at least what we’ve shown , the tackling was savage . At this point anyway we could be in real trouble in 2025 , of course that can change but you’d have to have concerns at this stage.

B

Big Mike says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:21 pm

M

mayomagic says:

Strong wind advantage with ability to kick two pointers make a big difference. Kerry with just one in three games and that was thanks to a few late goals v Derry.

N

February 15, 2025 at 9:23 pm

Great win @williejoe. It just shows a big lead can be reeled in nearly like a hurling.

N

T

I agree Big Mike, the referee was excellent this evening.

J

JoeG says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:37 pm

Jack O'Connor definitely missed a trick tonight. If he thought David Clifford was only good for half a game or half an hour he should have employed him in the first half with the wind and 2 pointers for the taking. If he even kicked one it would have seen a Kerry victory. A lot to be thought about with team selections particularly on windy days. Scorers on for wind assistance and more defenders against it maybe.

C

Ciaran 2 says:

U

Ultair says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:46 pm

That's two big second-half swings in one evening. Makes our capitulation last-time out even worse in retrospect. We look well off the top six at this moment in time. Do we have the shooters to reel-in a ten point deficit, or even smaller? Tomorrow is massive for us. Lose the match and it's hard to see us taking three wins out of Armagh, Kerry, Derry and Donegal.

I thought Galway were slightly unlucky this evening. Derry were awarded a point which looked wide and Galway had a wide given for what seemed like a point. But Shane Walsh again, what a player...

C

Culmore says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:48 pm

Walsh and Co weren't that good tonight when the Derry boys got close up to them in the second half. Hope McStay was watching and gives the order to up the aggression tomorrow. HIT THEM HARD AND HIT THEM OFTEN, GET THE RETALTION IN FIRST.

C

Clare says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:53 pm

@Culmore agree they faded a bit when Derry really turned it up a gear or two.

Totally agree on that point ti hope McStay was watching I'm sure he was!

S

Sean Burke says:

February 15, 2025 at 9:57 pm

We are 50/1 to win the league , well worth a 5 er each/way . It’s highly unlikely , almost impossible hence the big odds but always a “but “ with Mayo (lol) if we snuck a win tomorrow , got going and armagh had an off day next week , we’d be 12/1 , your cash out would be in profit , Kerry then in castlebar, take a chance , win and you’re 7/1 , take the cash out for significant profit . I’m going for it haha (tongue cheek, kinda )

P

Paddyjoejohntom says:

N

Nephin says:

February 15, 2025 at 10:54 pm

JoeG. I thought the same myself regarding Clifford, but would Jack have been able to put on without losing a sub after the toss for ends. Maybe he took a gamble that didn’t work.

S

Sticks for the Reek says:

February 15, 2025 at 11:05 pm

Anyone that thinks they were 2 good games of football must be part of the media gaa pr machine. Dublin just held onto the ball for 4 minutes and Kerry never pressed them. They had almost 50 passes in that time running down the clock against the breeze. If the games weren't close they would be boring. Some of the new rules are an improvement but they have not addressed the elephant in the room being the handball as opposed to football. It's simple ban the hand pass except for maybe by the attacking team inside 40 meter line from the opposing teams goal.

G

Gojonnygo says:

February 15, 2025 at 11:13 pm

Agree 100 % sticks for reeks...kerry dublin very boring for 3/4 of the games, which was the case with the old rules as well.

Kerry very defensive and adopting blanket defences for a county who claim to be the aristocrats of football.

Watching today's games, mayo are most definitely a 2nd tier team

R

Rober says:

February 15, 2025 at 11:27 pm

Sticks for the week, agree completely with you..parts of both games were horrible to watch, switched over to watch the poor enough rugby. This lateral hand passing has to go.

T

to win just once says:

February 16, 2025 at 12:06 am

Imagine if Mayo blew the sort of a league Kerry did. No doubt McStay and the entire Co Board would have to go. Even if they blew a lead like Galway did There would be uproar. If they lose tomorrow it will be because we didn’t name the full 26. Nothing to do with the fact that our team just might not be good enough at the moment or that we are missing anything between 6 and 9 championship starters.

J

JoeT1480 says:

February 16, 2025 at 12:45 am

Rober, Sticks.....can't argue with ye're position.
The endless hand passing has to be examined. I'm a fan of the game, not a scholar and can't add anything to a solution but isn't it obvious that the endless hand passing has taken away from the spectacle of a game that is essentially about the execution of the skills of kicking and fielding?

E

Ever the optimist says:

February 16, 2025 at 8:42 am

Injury list is ever increasing for Dublin though. Gannon only back and it looked bad. Hamstrings and ACL injuries...the gaa needs to examine the frequency of them. You need legs like maradonas to play the game nowadays

J

JP says:

February 16, 2025 at 9:32 am

From wfat I seen Kerry will win Sam with David Clifford back. Think on it He'll probably go up a level with these new rules.

J

Jr says:

February 16, 2025 at 9:53 am

There is no getting away from it, goalie coming forward slows the game and stops defenders going into the tackle.
If Jack O'Connor wanted to give Clifford some time he should have done it with the wind.

J

JP says:

February 16, 2025 at 11:12 am

Agree with you JR. Get rid of the attacking goalie and it shoukd reduce a bit the ability to do the lateral handpassing. You'd be close to a perfect game then.
I would like to see the defenders rewarded more for forcing barging or steps and that does anecdotally seem to be happening. Refs are not allowing forwards barge their way into really advanced attacking positions from free and then solo and go.

C

Clare says:

February 16, 2025 at 11:22 am

@JP but that was a shocking result for them last night letting an 11 point game go and first time Dubs have won in Tralee in years mad that!

J

JP says:

February 16, 2025 at 11:32 am

Proper Kerry football won't care about that result. They'll be thinking, summer weather, season of work done, David Clifford back.
League never worries Kerry. They'll be doing a lot of power and speed work to be on top of the ground for All Ireland knockout stages.

E

Ever the optimist says:

February 16, 2025 at 12:24 pm
