Say what you want about the new rules – and much of what I’ve said about them has been critical – but they sure are delivering in the crazy, off-the-wall, totally bonkers department. We found that today as we turned the tide on a strong Kerry comeback to eke out a precious two-point win at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park.
Such an outcome looked unlikely in the extreme as Kerry shook off their first half torpor – where they trailed us by seven – to come roaring back into it after the break. With ten minutes to go they were two in front and would have edged back ahead again four minutes from time if David Clifford’s attempt to land a two-point free had the distance, which luckily it hadn’t.
Like the Tyrone game a fortnight ago it was us who then came with the last, decisive push. In what was a frenzied finale, Ryan O’Donoghue’s effort came back off the post before Matthew Ruane stroked it over, finally sealing a two-point win after what had been an absorbing contest.
We made our usual pre-match changes to the starting line-up, with three switches before the ball was thrown in. Sam Callinan started in place of Eoghan McLaughlin, Fenton Kelly came in for Davitt Neary (who was withdrawn from the match day panel, I’ve no idea why) and Jack Carney started instead of Paul Towey.
We began by far the brighter and proceeded to put in the best half of football we’ve played all year. It would have been even better had Brían Ó Beaglaoich not been let in along the end line to score a wholly preventable goal against the run of play three minutes before the break but the lead we enjoyed at half-time, seven points, was still a healthy one.
What was noteworthy about that first half was our spread of scorers, with seven players in all getting on the scoresheet before the break.
Colm Reape opened our account inside the opening minute but they responded immediately with quick-fire scores from play from David Clifford and Paul Geaney. Kerry wouldn’t score again for over ten minutes and by then we had tacked on five points.
Frank Irwin clipped over two nice scores and then Ryan O’Donoghue boomed over a two-pointer from a free after we’d won a stirring turnover in the lead-up. That was the first incident that brought a big roar from the crowd of close to 10,000. Ryan then added another point from a free after Mattie was fouled.
Jack Carney – buzzing with activity around the middle, constantly moving the ball on rapidly – fizzed a shot over from just inside the arc to restore our four-point advantage. That, though, was only the first of six points without reply as we surged nine clear.
Darren McHale banged over two points, bookended by one from Mattie, and then Sam came with a mazy run to tack on another. Ryan clipped over a free after he was fouled to stretch our lead to nine.
It was then that Kerry pulled back the goal that took the shine off that period of dominance for us. Clifford tapped over a free, after the ball had been brought up when Mattie didn’t let go of it out the field.
We, fittingly, had the last say of the half when Ryan blasted over a monstrous line ball from well outside the arc. It was his second two-pointer and it sent us in seven to the good.
The question then was what kind of fight was left in Kerry. Weakened by injuries and playing their second away match in a row, this one after a six-day turnaround, they’d have been forgiven for letting this one slide.
But, of course, that’s rarely the Kerry way. They came roaring back into it, so much so that ten minutes from the end they looked nailed-on to win it.
Dylan Geaney’s two-pointer on the resumption set the tone. Paudie Clifford added a point as we kicked three wides in quick succession. David Clifford added another from the right wing and Paul Geaney pointed a free after he’d been fouled.
Kerry were now within two of us. All that dominance we’d enjoyed around the middle was gone and they were now the ones snaffling up the breaks and driving hard at us. With over twenty minutes to go there was also loads of time for them to go on and win it.
That’s why Ryan O’Donoghue’s score, which went over off the upright, was so important for us. It felt like we’d staunched the bleeding, a feeling amplified when the Belmullet player scored again a minute later.
This, however, proved only a brief respite. Ryan’s brace was responded to by Dylan Geaney with another two-pointer and then, after Mattie had hooked one over off his left for us, they hit back with four points. The final score of that haul was a Clifford two-pointer and it edged them back in front for the first time since the same player had given them the lead in the first few minutes of the game.
Clifford celebrated that score enthusiastically and at the time it did seem to be the blow that might break our resolve. But was there an element of relief in it too? Donnacha McHugh was sticking to him like a limpet and the Fossa man never got the chance to weave the kind of magic he’d performed in Pomeroy last weekend.
Colm Reape then got pinged for taking too long over his kickout. In truth, that was a free that had been coming for at least the last month and Colm was eventually going to get done at some point for hesitating too long. Today he did and Clifford tapped over the free to extend Kerry lead’s to two.
If you’d told us then that (a) Kerry would fail to score again today and (b) we’d come with four unanswered scores to claim the spoils, it would have been greeted as an unlikely story. But that’s exactly what happened.
David McBrien started the comeback, ramming over a point when the goal chance was possibly on. Then Fergal Boland, as we recycled after Paul Towey’s tame goal effort that was never on, lofted over a cracking equaliser.
A minute later the irrepressible Ryan O’Donoghue was back in the thick of it. Having been fouled he took the free himself and we were back in front again.
Then came the incident that looked like it would decide the game. Donnacha got too physical with Clifford from Seán Hurson’s point of view, but it looked an extremely harsh call. The free was in a central position just outside the arc, with only four minutes to so.
As he shaped to take it we could all see tomorrow’s headlines in the making. But Clifford’s effort just didn’t have the legs and Colm was able to leap and claim it at the level of the crossbar.
Kerry then got another soft free further out but couldn’t do anything with it. Suddenly we had it and were breaking out, with the seconds counting down to the hooter.
The place was fairly rocking now and it looks as if Ryan had sealed it as he broke through and shot. His effort came back off the post but we kept the ball and it made its way across to Mattie who stroked it over just before the hooter sounded, drowned out by an enormous roar which seemed to encompass a mixture of joy and relief.
It really was a wild game, one that fizzed and crackled right through. We looked at first like we’d win with ease, then that we’d lose a very different game of two halves.
In the final analysis, though, for the second home game in a row we looked the opposition in the eyes coming down the stretch and outplayed them at the finish. That’s got to be the major positive from today, as it’s a trait that, if we nurture it, will get us a long way.
The win, our second in this Division One campaign, also lifts those dark clouds concerning relegation. We’re not completely safe yet but five points may well prove to be enough for us. For now, ahead of tonight’s games, we’re up to fourth in the table.
Based on the battling qualities we showed for so long today, it also looks well within our compass now to pick up further points in the final two rounds of this year’s National League. That’s quite the turnaround since the Galway game and a very welcome one at that.

Interesting so, some players are scoring very consistently so far this year. Mattie Ruane top of the pile. He's such an asset running from midfield. Neary scoring well. Ryan back on form. Irwin has scored well. Towey has scored solidly, Flynn of course.
Mayo don't have many star players but they have a very deep panel. Only corner forward are we a bit light. Maybe Cillian will change his mind!!

Great win at the death today. Aidan o shea caught 2 great kickouts in the last quarter to turn the tide once again for mayo. Things are coming along nicely. Mayo supporters were better today too.

@clare. Well done on your 2pt prediction yesterday I hope you had a few euro on it..... Something of note today also I thought mayo Really fought for every ball a good example being when keeping the ball alive after Ryan's last attempt hit the post and working it to Ruane for the final score.. All round good performance and as @seanBurke stated earlier no team will dominate from start to finish but it's about making hay during the time when we dominating and i think they did that pretty well today. They have to take confidence from today and hopefully take 2 more points from the remaining 4... Just out of interest if mayo were to win the last 2 games and sneak into a league final what would ye think of that?i mean would we be better playing a league final or quietly going about business while waiting for championship

Delighted for the lads putting it together consistently.
Were getting to tempo of games now and despite all the uproar about changes etc , we have tried alot of lads and alot of lads hitting form.
Hopefully Mchugh and Hess remain at 3 and 4 as both are ideal in the roles to.mark any kind of forwards and two very honest athletes.
I do think EOD is best man to be no2 but great to see coyne and he battle it out.
Mcbrien at 6 is a massive asset and hopefully we get to see Conor back again , he's made for the no 5 role beside Mcbrien. Nice to see Sam.freed out to halfback line and we reape the rewards for it .
The impact from bench of Eoghan Mac is great asset too.
Flynn aido Carney and Matty as options centerfield is very good and great versatility in alternating them.
Conor Reid too will have big role to play.
Half forwards great options and with Tommy Conroy to come back it will give us more cut and trust there aswell as an exceptional talent in Niall Coggins.
Special word for Darren Mchale he's being a great forward at club level but haven't seen him as a breaking ball winner as much as he's done of late and superb stuff from him as you'd expect distribution and score taking.
Inside line going well and be good now pressures off us to give a go to Cian Mchale.
Boland and Towey as impact subs looks good options

Things I haven’t seen mentioned yet , didn’t think reape had a great game , only a 6 out of 10 at best , mcbrien looks like he’s going to be some line breaker come championship, he looks for that traditional one two but didn’t get it back today , when he’s fine tuned I think he could be lethal .
Km79 says:
March 1, 2025 at 8:11 pm
Yes Sean
Reape is a bit of a worry now. His kickouts under pressure have never been great. Now every kickout is under 20 second pressure.
I hope keepers are restricted to their own half when tiles are finalized.
We won’t lose much whereas the likes of Armagh and Tyrone will lose a significant attacking outlet !!!

Bar one or two kicks I thought Reape done very well, drove forward offering outlets. Opened the scoring to set the time early on.
Options for kickouts weren't great at times. Management should adopt the drive it a sling as can when nothing on as he's a big boot. Interesting take on it from last week's game here: https://x.com/MindTheNet/status/1895077730422493198?t=8tbIi_0LZIvUs7Lmm6tRRQ&s=08
Very enjoyable game today, played at league intensity for the vast majority as you'd expect. Bit more intensity in last 5. But don't recall any cards or hard hits. Couldn't see same happening if meet in championship.

March 1, 2025 at 8:40 pm
I thought reape did ok today other than the delayed kickout. Got the 1st score and did well under the crossbar and gave options in attack plenty of times. It's not as easy find a teammate with the long kickout especially if team mates aren't showing enough.
Gizmobobs says:
March 1, 2025 at 8:44 pm
We don't create many goal scoring chances, that's something I'd like to see targeted in next two rounds and final if get there.
As will likely need score some in championship.

If the ref that's in Armagh was in Castlebar today Reape would have been penalised every time for delaying the kick out he needs to learn 20 second rule.
2 hops says:
March 1, 2025 at 8:50 pm
I'd agree with No doubt. I thought on balance Reape was good.
One straight over sideline with a bit to spare but brought down several from under or maybe over the crossbar.
One really dangerous one in particular which he punched accurately to a team mate while under severe pressure, was impressive.
Vahey will need a game soon though,to keep him honest and see what he brings to the table.

To be fair, most teams are struggling to get a high % successful kick outs, I think that clean catches like AOS, or winning breaking ball is where the midfield battle is going, and we seem to be getting better in recent games. The 20 second rule change is another challenge for the goalies. Anyway, I am a big advocate of the new rules and confident that some of the issues will be addressed, as an ex goalie I would also favour the 12 V 11 but let's see where the FRC decides.

Matty Ruane is top class. The game can pass him by when he's stuck in midfield, but when he's operating in the final 1/3 of the pitch, he's an absolute menace. Hopefully McStay and co. can find him a place in the forwards. As reliable a scorer as any of our forwards.

Fantastic to see high fielding coming back into the game and Aidan o Shea certainly rolling back the years today.it’s interesting how mayo’s approach has changed over the last couple of games.it’s very difficult now to shut down a game when leading as Dublin became masters at when every kickout has now become a contest in the air.

@moose79.there are 3 different punishments from what i read depending on what type of line break. 20 m free, free where line is crossed or ref throw up the ball.it explains the 3 different discrepancies in the rule book. It would fry your head trying to keep up with it but the ref micked up would help

Delighted for the win and except for the 15 mins at the start of the second half when we reverted to Rochford tortoise ball we played well. A lot of talk about goalies and kick outs but as the ball has to travel over the 40 m arc kick outs are more 50/50 now which is great as it brings in the high fielders and favours players that get stuck in for the breaking ball. Look at the contrast in the 2 halves in the Dublin Armagh game. The team that's off it and less intense makes the opposing goalie look great. Thankfully kick outs are now more about out field players. Aidan caught 2/3 today that turned the game for us aided by Ryan. Hession also deserves great credit because when we reverted to sideways ball he decided to hell with this and broke directly with pace a few times to stem the tide.Win the next 2 and we might make the final which would be great.

@moose79: If you breach carrying or contesting the ball, it's a free on halfway.
If you breach it any other time, it's a free on the opposition 20m line (or edge of the arc).
As for what happened in the Armagh/Dublin game? No idea.
It looked like they awarded a free on halfway for a breach while contesting the ball, but not sure what happened after to move it up. Either another non ball contesting 3/3 breach happened with a Dublin forward or possibly dissent from the Dublin lads who did seem to be unhappy with the call claiming they had a 3rd up. Would be the most likely things that would end with that type of free, but neither were obvious.

A great win Well done Huge credit to players and management, Interesting when we lose games management get the blame but when we win it’s the players who get the credit. I am a firm believer that the vast majority of credit or blame should go to players. When Galway beat us at the death last year and Derry beat us on penalties it was player errors that cost us. Of course management are crucial in the way they set up the team, create morale etc. A few weeks ago some here were declaring this year was a write off ( in February. no less) and were scathingly critical of management. But in the last 3 games we have shown great courage and resilience to get past Tyrone, come from 9 down v Armagh to draw and score the last 4 to beat Kerry. Great work from players and management. Not sure how the season will pan out but at least a bit more optimism which is great. Well done to all again.

Funny how things change, league final now also in the mix as a concern!
Said it a few weeks ago on here that I felt a team we are currently capable of putting together can be competitive. Now it is about a consistent level of application and competitiveness.
Comparing to last year, Irwin, Morahan, Kelly all new additions to the 26 consistently. Neary too even though he missed yesterday. What are they bringing, and the team as a whole that will be different to last year?

Nitpicking, I know but we really should have scored a goal in the final play. 3 v 1..one hand pass and we were through to an empty net. Our score difference is a concern and will come into focus ahead of the final round if we lose in Derry and other results go against us. There was time and space to get a simple goal.

So, so many positives to take from yesterdays game. Individually and collectively things are progressing nicely. We are far from the finished article, it is only Rd 5 of the league, but the squad AND management are both definitely on an upward curve. Any pub talk of a "split in the camp" is just that, pub talk. If the character and culture within the dressing room and the squad was in any way "split" then we would not have won two tight games and battled back for a draw in Armagh. As you brilliantly put it WJ, for 3 games in a row we looked our opponent straight in the eyes and outplayed them when the game was in the mix (only for Bolands error we would have won in Armagh).
The players are clearly backing their manager, and to be fair, the manager is backing himself too with his spikey comments and dressing down of some of the journos. I like to see that, don't be a soft touch in interviews, put the scribes in their place, back your squad and they'll back you. He did, and they are.
We still have a lot of work to do, especially on our own kick out, but it's plain to see that there is a much work being done on the training pitch. Our press on their defense, our tackle and getting men in around the ball carrier and turning him over, and, whatever is going on with these hand signals, there's defo much better leadership and communication going on pitchside. Maybe it's just that a win makes everything look so much rosier, but the interaction and energy on the sideline seems better too, every player coming off has gone straight to McStay for the handshake and he seems more assertive on the line than earlier this season.

20 second rule on kickouts is a complete joke. There's no clock on it so it's completely at the ref's discretion and he's not counting to 20 on every kickout. It was highlighted on the Sunday Game tonight where the keeper, not sure which game was blown up after 14.3 seconds and the opposition awarded a tap over free.
