Mayo play Offaly on Sunday at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park in a charity game in aid of Mayo Cancer Support (throw-in 1.30pm). A short time ago we named a 27-player panel for the game and here it is.
Mayo (Charity Match v Offaly, 21/12/2025): Jack Livingstone (Breaffy); Enda Hession (Garrymore), Diarmuid Duffy (Ballinrobe), Liam Golden (Ballina Stephenites); Fenton Kelly (Davitts), Seán Morahan (Castlebar Mitchels), Michael Plunkett (Ballintubber); Jordan Flynn (Crossmolina Deel Rovers), Bob Tuohy (Castlebar Mitchels); Séamus Howard (Belmullet), Paul Towey (Charlestown Sarsfields), Nathan Moran (Hollymount/Carramore); Darragh Beirne (Claremorris), Aidan O Shea (Breaffy), Tommy Conroy (The Neale). Subs: David Dolan (Balla), Eoin McGreal (Garrymore), Adam Barrett (Kilmaine), Cian McHale (Moy Davitts), Ryan O’Donoghue (Belmullet), James Carr (Ardagh), Kuba Callaghan (Ballaghaderreen), Niall Hurley (Claremorris), Conal Dawson (Westport), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Dylan Thornton (Ballina Stephenites), Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore).
This is only a challenge match in late December so obviously no conclusions should be drawn from who is on the list for Sunday and who isn’t. It’s good, though, to see all those new names included, most of whom performed strongly over the course of the club championships this year.
You’d imagine liberal use will be made by both teams of their respective benches so there’s a good chance the bulk of those named in the match day panel will see action at some point on the day.
If you’re planning on going along, tickets for the game need to be purchased in advance (link here). The match is also being streamed live by Mayo GAA TV and the link for that is here.
We’ll have a Final Whistle pod for our club members on Patreon after the game on Sunday.

Disappointed that Davitt Neary seems to have opted out this year .
Also think we should be looking at a few more from the Crossmolina team . Id have all 3 Coggins lads in and Maheady too . Maheady is an excellent kicker off left and right .

Can someone perhaps TsuDhoNim give a breakdown on ages of the 27 man panel named. I think 4 of this year's U20s if not more are included?

Most pleasing thing for me is that Andy named a panel on Friday evening for a challenge match. Not that it matters really but hopefully a sign of what’s to come. Not this nonsense of withholding the team sheet. Or naming dummy teams.

I've just had to delete two comments in which derogatory remarks were made about players, one named and the other not named but clearly identifiable. Trash-talking of players isn't allowed here so I'd ask the offending parties to please keep this in mind.

@MO2023: If there's anything in particular you're looking for that Rocco88 didn't cover already, just shout and it wouldn't take long to pull together.
2 current u19s (Darragh Beirne & Eoin McGreal) that'll likely be part of Keith's u20 panel for next year.
4 more that were part of the 6 (including the lads above) that were on this years u20 panel (Seamus Howard, Diarmuid Duffy, Niall Hurley, David Dolan).
Then 2 more (Conal Dawson & Sean Morahan) from '24s 20s and 4 more (Fenton Kelly, Bob Tuohy, Liam Golden & Cian McHale) that all would have been eligible for '23s 20s.
(I'd have the same on the two * there Rocco, but as the only alteration I'd only have Nathan at 26 yet with him having played in the 2019 u20 Championship)
Average age of team named to start - 24.1
Average age of panel named - 23.9
(with the median of the panel selected at just 22 showing it skewing pretty young and the odd outliers over 30 pulling that average up)

I know we can't draw too many conclusions at this early stage, but a few interesting positional selections strike me. The one that really hits me is the placing at full-back of Diarmuid Duffy-has he ever featured much there. I like to see Michael Plunkett at wing back, with his ability to kick two pointers. It' looks like Howard and Moran are seen as auxiliary midfielders. I'd love to see Tuohy fulfill his obvious potential this year.

Surprised to see Ballina and Westport players involved after what Andy said in his interview but maybe because it's for charity that he's trying to boost attendance.
I hope the blog isn't crammed with negativity after the game regardless of what ensues. Let's just enjoy the game and support our cancer charity.

A few Ballina and Westports would be getting much rest. Frank Irwin Ballina and Conal Dawson Westport are both playing for UL and will be playing Sigerson in the new year, probably Andy last chance to see them become Sigerson begins. Same with Cian McHale, Fenton Kelly Sean. Morahon and probably a few more as well.

@Mayomessi: Yeah. Think Andy mentioned 13 (open to correction if anyone has a better memory) of the lads that'd be unavailable for the FBD/early league with Sigerson.
You'd have...
Irwin, Dawson, McHale, Morahan, O'Loughlin, McGreal (UL - not sure if Fenton is still eligible there given he didn't appear in the league that I know of), Beirne (UL Freshers), Callinan, Hurley, Duffy (UCD) and MacMonagle (UG) among those likely tied up.
Then maybe McLaughlin (DCU) if involved or some combination of Livingstone (ATUG), Thornton (ATUS) or Kelly (UL) if they haven't finished up yet (I'd assume they have, but very open to correction) or Lydon, Lynch, Golden or McDonald (he might include PPS under the same heading) also possibly a part of that 13 figure.
Look forward to seeing those Sigerson registration lists when they come out. A load of our current or recent u20 lads I wouldn't have a clue if they're with a potential Sigerson side, never mind which one. A few others like Reilly (UCD) or Melvin (UL) you wouldn't be shocked if they put down a serious year and forced their way (back) in to conversations yet.

JoeG, I saw Jack Melvin and Cathal Corless playing for UL in the league, same age as their Davitts colleague Fenton Kelly. I thought he would have been still there. Was surprised that Jack Melvin wasn’t in the panel, well able to kick 2 pointers, but there still time.
Has Ronan Clarke ever played college football,
Dara Hurley and Tom O Flaherty played against UL for Galway in the league final. There should be plenty of Mayo interest in the Sigerson
JoeG says:

Mayomessi. Melvin and Corless both good players but presumably the births of those two are post Jan 1st and Fenton pre that date. As far as I know young Kelly is working in Galway now.
Sigerson is a better watch when we have Mayo lads involved.

@mayomessi agree thought that Jack Melvin would get a look in considering he’s the same club as Boyle.
Davitts had a underwhelming season but he seemed to take up most of the scoring from midfield.
Great to see Howard and Moran on the wings tomorrow. Clearly going for the big men around the middle to match the new game and increased emphasis on winning midfield.
One part of me is wondering why in the name of god is Aidan O’Shea starting a game in December; the other is excited to think that Andy could finally get the best out of him. Also, it will be interesting to see how Conroy and Beirne feed off him.

Mayo totally a different team in the second half. The introduction of Ryan o Donoghue and Cian McHale change the game, style of play, we came more direct. Darragh Beirne and Cian McHale, 9 points between them from Two left footers. It wasn’t perfect but there was positive signs.
TsuDhoNim says:
December 21, 2025 at 4:08 pm
Positive to see so many of the younger/newer lads doing well and especially positive to see the way the lads were trying to build up the plays (even when it wasn't quite clicking at times in the 1st half it was a positive to see it tried). So much of what you'd hope to see... and clearly still a huge amount still to work on yet.
Impressive showing from Golden at the back, McHale really threading play together when he came on for the 2nd half and DB showing some of his flashes up top. Interesting to have Lydon (another still u20 next year) flying in the 2nd half of the Longford game on the back pitch too.
Hard to measure that kind of impact from RO'D when he came on. We looked a different team, whether he was pulling the strings deeper or being the big threat inside. Looks like a man who's taken on an even higher level of leadership (saying something given he's been a leader for years now) this past 12 months, club and county.
Fintan Keane says:

A mixed bag from the Offaly game but, for me, I was more looking to see who could make a case for further involvement this year, rather than winning a challenge game. Also, I was hoping to see what was Andys style and if we were going to see a more expansive fast paced attack, as opposed to the lateral cautious stuff fromast year.
Many positives on both fronts in my opinion. Morahan, Howard, Beirne and Conroy laid a marker as did, to a lesser extent, Kelly and MacHale. We looked to kick more ball from our middle third a lot more than last year, while playing it through the hands in our defensive areas. There was a few good runs inside by both Beirne and Conroy which went unrewarded and one poor ball from O'Donoghue to Beirne which, had it been more accurate, a goal would surely have been the result.
All in all, a good run out in front of a nice crowd and all for a good cause.
JoeG says:
December 21, 2025 at 4:37 pm
The abandonment of endless lateral hand passing and a lot of quick ball into full forward line was a real plus. Thought of the new lads Golden Morahan, Kelly, Bierne and McHale all did well. James Carr showed us what we've been missing and overall plenty of positives.
2 hops says:
December 21, 2025 at 5:11 pm
Also If we had complaints about a passive sideline recently,we definitely don't have that issue anymore... Andy will be heard. His constant encouraging of the younger players in particular has to be a huge positive for them.

Darragh Beirne looks ready to take the 13 jersey he has buckets of football in him, just needs to keep on top of S and C and Diet and get plenty of gametime in FBD and National League, along with Kobe McDonald we possibly looking at 2 players Under 19 in starting 6 forwards for Mayo in championship.
Clare says:

Lots of positives to take from the 2nd half. Was so nice to see the guys trying to go for a 2 pointer even if it was wide good to see them trying to go for it .
So good not to see the boring lateral hand passing also.
Darragh Beirne made a great first impression into seniors. It's always hard on your debut espcially at his age even in a challenge game. He got a class 2 pointer as well fair play to him.
Cian McHale & Ryan O ' D changed the game when they came on. Ryan O ' D is just a class act as always. Also great to see Tommy Conroy back !
Good game and for a great cause .
