We’ve the first of two January meetings with Galway coming up this Sunday. St Jarlath’s Park in Tuam is the venue for our FBD League Cup final clash with the neighbours, throw-in on Sunday is 1pm. The match day panel we’ve named for the fixture is as follows:
Mayo (FBD League Cup final v Galway, 18/1/2026): Jack Livingstone (Breaffy); Liam Golden (Ballina Stephenites), Stephen Coen (Hollymount/Carramore), Sam Callinan (Ballina Stephenites; Fenton Kelly (Davitts), John MacMonagle (Castlebar Mitchels, captain), Cathal Keaveney (Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin);
Darragh Joyce (Claremorris), Dylan Thornton (Ballina Stephenites); Diarmuid Duffy (Ballinrobe), Jack Carney (Kilmeena), Nathan Moran (Hollymount/Carramore); Cian McHale (Moy Davitts), Kuba Callagahan (Ballaghaderreen), Niall Hurley (Claremorris). Subs: David Dolan (Balla), Eoin McGreal (Garrymore), Colm Lynch (Parke/Keelogues/Crimlin), Luke Jordan (Ballina Stephenites), Liam Donoghue (Kiltane), Oisín Jordan (Balla), Frank Irwin (Ballina Stephenites), Adam Barrett (Kilmaine), Paul Towey (Charlestown Sarsfields), Tom Lydon (The Neale), Fergal Boland (Aghamore).
So it’s all change (almost literally) from last Sunday’s meeting with Roscommon at Dr Hyde Park. Just three players who started last Sunday – Liam Golden, Cathal Keaveney and Diarmuid Duffy – are also named to line out in Tuam, with none of the other twelve who featured from the start against Roscommon included in the match day panel for Sunday. Castlebar’s John MacMonagle has been named as captain for the day.
If you’re planning on heading to Tuam on Sunday the ticket link for the game is here. TG4 are streaming the game live on their Spórt TG4 YouTube channel (here) and the stream will also be embedded here on the blog on the day for ease of viewing.
We will, of course, also have a Final Whistle on the game for club members and that’ll be up on Patreon soon after the contest has been decided.

Interesting team again. Andy is casting the net wide. I had noticed Luke Doherty in the county championship - great pace. Good to see Niall Hurley starting. I liked what I saw of him last week, though the ball didn’t run for him.

No surprise to see John MacMonagle take the captaincy for this one. If he stays injury‑free, he looks destined to be a central figure for Mayo for the next decade and beyond.

Galway in Round 1 of the NFL.
No way Andy was going to give Joyce the lesson plan. Rather we lose the FBD Final and give them a good firm pumping above in Salthill, if possible.
Poor aul PJ's troops are thinning by the week, the poor aul cratur.

Yeah it's great to see as Boyler said this game is going to be used to give others an opportunity to hold their hand up for league .
Niall hurley is really promising good to see him get a chance starting .

It's a final and winning finals is important for Mayo. Interesting opportunity for McMonagle for sure a bright future. Plenty of strength in depth to finish off the last quarter of game in style.

Excellent fullforward line, big lads around the middle who are accurate passers .
Teak tough halfbackline , great on ground defenders in cornerbacks. Game on . Brave team but a form team so full credit to Andy

Galway team named, like yourselves very experimental, four known names starting, with Finnerty on the bench.
Great chance for everyone to stake a claim for the following weekend.

@Tuamstar: How would you rate some of the lesser known lads on that panel?
High potential with expectations or mostly lads with a net cast wide and wouldn't have much belief they'll make it later in the year?
No idea what to expect from the likes of Carson or Moughan. Wouldn't remember/know them from club or underage, but likely says a lot more about me than them.
Fionn McDonagh looks a serious prospect. A handful for anyone with his size and then has the skill too.

Hard to judge Tsu, saw last Saturday's game and the game v London.
London were junior club level, Leitrim were better but I'd expect a really good challenge for both teams this Sunday.
This will be something similar to an in house game before a big championship fixture, with everyone going hard to impress Andy and PJ.
Shane Mc Grath from Dunmore has impressed in the forwards, Fionn is a big lad alright but still fairly raw.
Moughan had a good season with Moycullen and is a tight marker at the back.
Some other young lads like Costello, Mulhearn and our own Shay Mc Glinchey are all under 20 but would be hopeful they would all feature strongly this weekend.
Conor Carson impressed at underage for Corofin, strong and athlethic and loves the physical confrontation, don't know if he will make the cut this year though.
Ryan Roche from Killanin at midfield kicked four 2 pointers for ATU this week so maybe one to watch..

Surprised Josh Carey didn’t get a run out considering he was shooting the lights out before he was sent off in the quarter finals.
Has Golden the sufficient skill set for inter county? I thought he was primarily a rugby player.
No Kilmeena player bar Carney called in?
Any word on James Carr?
Is he still the only Junior player in the squad?
Is Loftus back in the squad?
Should be an interesting game on Sunday.

Golden looked like a proper no-frills corner back from what I saw in Sligo game. there's definitely a place for them, maybe more so with new rules.
Not every defender needs to be haring up the field

The choice of team this week not as strong on paper as last week probably because it's known that it's a match against a development Galway team. So plenty of shadow boxing going on before the more important game in Salthill the following week.
I see the rossies lost to Sligo tonight and conceded 1-18 puts some perspective on the Hyde match last Sunday?

Interesting approach by both managers,
Kerry v Cork have gone the other way naming 2 strong sides for our game today.
I was surprised to see some of the names but Jack is cute and knows we dont want to give Cork any oxygen by beating us in Killarney.
The other side is you really only see a how a new guy can play when they have established players beside them for guidance.
Glorydays says:
January 17, 2026 at 10:11 am
@west Kerry Jack isnt worried about Cork he's going for number 40 and all the cute hoorism in Kerry wont disguise that. Ye will be marked men but will take a good team to stop ye. We wont win Sam but well capable of putting a stop to any teams gallop on our day
TsuDhoNim says:

@Driveitlong&hard: I'd have been more surprised with Joey Holmes not being involved, but quite a few of our (assumed) current u20 panel that'd think they were unfortunate (Coghill, Moyles, O'Malley, Flynn, Holmes, Carey) not to get a nod. No harm at all.
Having McGreal, Lavelle, Lynch, Staunton, McDonald, Lydon & Beirne coming back to the squad with some senior/development minutes under the belt only a positive for Zippy & the group too. Rising tide and all that craic. With it being interesting to see if a couple of those return at all.
Golden: Probably the most consistent 1v1 defender in club football the last two years in the county. Some huge chances where you thought goal at first look, but they got turned around or turned over by Liam.
Not going to be a live option for some intercounty speedsters, but for certain matchups I'd expect he'd do a great job (with a horses for courses selection needed for most matchups these days - interesting to see who we use to tag the young Galway giant. Raw but very dangerous). A tough spot to break into the panel given the competition back there, fair play to him if he manages. Will get close imho.
Kilmeena: Luke Moore was involved in the Dev game against Longford.
Junior: Just Carr that we know of so far (or that I'd expect).
1 Junior, 17 intermediate & 45 Senior across the 63 that have seen minutes (before yesterday's game, can't remember the list exactly without checking so either 0 changes or +1 senior from it) or mentioned specifically by Andy to date.
@Mayomagic: I wouldn't read too much into relative results like that. Between different teams and different circumstances (word on the pod mentioned Roscommon had done a training session prior to our game, so explains why the legs looked so heavy) that kind of measure wouldn't hold up too well.
Outside of what kinds of tactical things or pillars of play teams are trying to do with their own setup stuff like a scoreline, result or even relative energy levels can be taken with a pinch of salt this time of year.

Glorydays,
If Cork get their act together they are a good team.
Took us to extra time in Munster last year and have some very good players.
Id arguably put them in that same group as Mayo at the moment.
Jack is cute and letting your neighbours beat you at home albeit in a pre season game only gives them oxygen for a likely Munster final later in the year.
Clare says:
January 17, 2026 at 10:57 am
Kerry are not playing cork 2 weekends in a row though so easier to play more established players for a pre season game .
WestKerry says:
January 17, 2026 at 11:01 am
Two teams coming from two very different places so im not knocking the Mayo selection.
They are looking for new players so its completely understandable.
The only argument to that is that its easier to identify these lads if they have some established players beside them.
Clare says:
January 17, 2026 at 11:04 am
Which is why Andy played more established players v the Rossies with newbies . The real test for us will be in Salthill so I am glad he is resting key players as it will be a tough ask .
Gizmobobs says:
January 17, 2026 at 11:24 am
It was a strong team last night v Clare, more likely to resemble what will take on Galway in first round of league.
Glorydays says:
January 17, 2026 at 12:25 pm
We can probably afford to win the national league this year as our first game is away to London no disrepect meant to them. We were lucky to get out of London with a win in 2011 James Horan's first championship game in charge i think Andy will blood a lot of new players and rightly so

West Kerry - I'd say between colleges, club and county senior and county underage - in the last 30 meetings between Kerry and Cork teams- Kerry have won 27 of these 30 games.
Reality is Kerry teams are pulling further away from Cork - despite Kerry people trying to talk up Cork teams.
catcol says:
January 17, 2026 at 1:42 pm
West Kerry - a litmus test of Corks progress remains their Division Two status. They haven't really been at the sharp end here over the last few years; they should be.
Galwayman says:
January 17, 2026 at 2:29 pm
From a Galway perspective it’s hard to see many of the new faces featuring this year.
I think Mulhern, Costello and McGlinchey are all definitely lads that will play senior for Galway in the future - just not sure if it will be this year or not.
Costello is a quality baller but still seems very light for senior level yet.All thee are still under 20.
Brian Cogger and Shane McGrath have done well in the two games so far. I hadn’t seen much of either of them prior.
Ryan Roche was highly rated at underage level but I think never played minor or under 20 because he was contracted to Connacht underage.
I’ve seen very little of him.
The other guys such as Carson, Charlie Power etc. I can’t see featuring after FBD

I agree with west Kerry, a mix of newbies/experienced players is a fairer opportunity.
However winning finals is important for Mayo. Should be a decent test tomorrow. We have a strong bench. That should give us the edge.

0-21 to 2-09, about 10 points to 1-5 at HT. Tuohy, Towey and Hennelly probably lead scoring.

I see westmeath made great use of the 2 pointer yesterday. They were 8 down with 16 minutes remaining and kicked five 2 pointers along with a couple of other scores to win. It really shows the importance of the long range score and it proves it really isn't over until someone starts to sing.
