Loss to Cork sees ladies head for relegation play-off

This year’s LGFA Championship isn’t going well for the county team and a second Group Stage loss this afternoon, this time a 3-8 to 1-10 defeat to Cork at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, sees them out of the running for the Brendan Martin Cup.

Instead, with the LGFA Championship largely mirroring the way the club Championships are structured, Mayo are now facing a play-off to avoid relegation to the Intermediate ranks next season.

Ironically, this relegation play-off will be against Leitrim, who were Mayo’s first opponents in this year’s Championship where they met at Swinford in Round 1 of the Connacht SFC back at the end of April. On that occasion, Liam McHale’s charges prevailed by three points and they’ll be looking to win again when the counties meet in a fortnight, to ensure they stay at Senior level in 2026.

Report on today’s game by Stuart Tynan for Ladies Gaelic Football is here.

Hard luck to the Mayo ladies they should beat Leitrim youd think but you dont know either. Im afraid all the progress made under Michael Moyles has been undone.

Very impressed with the ladies today and despite everything going against them like a goal from a miss hit point, a square ball decision when the scorer appeared to run in after the kick and a ref that gave everything to Cork they still battled to the bitter end. Clearly they are fully behind the Mgt and they played a nice brand of football as well. So well done to them and those ladies that didn't make themselves available should have a serious rethink about playing for the jersey. When the going gets tough, the tough should get going.

Lay off Liam, its the ladies that are good enough to make the starting 15 and theres a good 6 or 7 that wont make themselves available that are the ones that are really letting down Mayo Ladies football.Managers can only do so much.

@Sticks for the Reek: You're thinking of the GAA square ball rule, rather than the (different - same as the old GAA one) LGFA rule.

"1. Should an attacking player be within the small parallelogram before the ball enters it during play, and it is not out of the reach of all player’s the defending team shall be awarded a free out from within the small rectangle."

I take your point Sam og and to a certain point agree but have you ever wondered why those ladies wont make themselves available?

They have come a long way under current management. Sad for everyone that there is a split.

Don't think, we maximise the talent that in county at ladies level. And I think the management need inspires, below them. And I don't know. This won't happen, but County board need to get Cora Staunton as manager. Girls in county will run thru a wall for her. That my opinion, but maybe Liam McHale will turn corner next year, and be man to return Mayo to top table

Cora was a great player maybe the best ever, but did the problems with ladies team not start with her a few years ago.

Cora Staunton would be an obvious for management/coach.....either in Women's or Mens code.
I suspect she could be part of a team that goes for the Men's job next time it comes up.She always seems sharp and a good analyst with alot of respect from all.She is our most successful player afterall

Probably will need at a couple more goals 2nd half, wind looks pretty strong and swirling,we won't be kicking any 2 pointers but if the lads inside click a touch more there's goals in it.

So if there are players that wont make themselves available to the mens team that makes it alright for the women, more bullshit.Alot of people during the week didnt like Brollys comments, but hes right Mayo just arent serious about winning.
