Loads of content to come from the Mayo Football Podcast in 2025

The inter-county action for the year gets underway this coming weekend and on the Mayo Football Podcast we’ve already come out of the traps fast with our coverage for 2025. Here’s a sample of what we’ve got for our podcast club members this week.

Club members already have access on Patreon to our National League preview pod. Mike is joined on the show by podcast regular Colm Boyle and by Colm Keys of the Irish Independent where the discussion ranges from the likely impact of the new rules, to how Mayo are set for this year to who the main contenders for Sam might be for 2025.

On Thursday we’ve a bonus pod for club members. This one features Mike in conversation with Andy Moran, where the Footballer of the Year for 2017 discusses Mayo, Monaghan (whose county team he’s coaching this year) and much more besides. Club members should keep an eye out on Thursday for that podcast episode.

There are three football matches of interest from Mayo’s perspective at the weekend. We’re planning on releasing Final Whistle pods reviewing all three of them, starting with the Mayo LGFA Lidl League opener against Dublin at Parnell Park on Saturday afternoon, followed by the Croke Park clash between Mayo and Dublin in the opening round of the Allianz League on Saturday evening. Then on Sunday it’s back to Croke Park again for Crossmolina’s All-Ireland Intermediate club final against Ballinderry. All three of these Final Whistle pods will be available for club members on Patreon shortly after these matches conclude.

Our popular bonus written column for club members on Patreon returns this weekend as well. Colm Boyle will be penning his thoughts on the start of the inter-county season in this week’s column, which club members will get exclusive access to nearer the weekend.

We’ve also rebooted our online chat platform for club members on Discord where no doubt the discussion will be back on in earnest once more over the coming days.

With all the content we’ve got in the works for 2025, there’s never been a better time to join the club on Mayo’s premium football podcast. Membership costs just €5 per month (plus VAT) but our best offer remains our annual membership, costing a single payment of just €52 (plus VAT), which works out at only €1 a week (plus VAT).

If you’re interested in joining our ever-expanding podcast club on Patreon, details on doing so are here.

The question has to be asked at this stage as to why so many of the ladies team are 'taking time out' from the team for 2025. Its into double figures at this stage so it's more than a coincidence.

No smoke without flames ,etc

Regarding the BLACK CARD,

For me it just doesn’t work in terms of punishing a team for cynical play.

I believe a team should be deducted the value of a goal (so -4 with the new rules) if any one of their players receive a black card.

For example if a team are winning by 3 or 4 points (based on new rules) and the opposing team are having what may be their one last attack and needing a goal no one will drag them down knowing the implication of -4 points. If there is no points deduction penalty then everybody will drag a player down in that type of scenario late on.

This will also mean referees will have to be more certain on the black decision but at the end of day all the players will know the implication ( points deduction) and not make a cynical foul so the referees should not have to make too many of these tough black card calls.

What are people’s opinion on this?

If the decision making was consistent it could be considered Jason.

What should be the card for reckless or very dangerous play, ie, a player running straight into a player while their head is almost on the ground picking up a ball or the same player not considered the safety of the opposition player in such a position and going in to try and get a boot to the ball.
This occurred in the club football final, Canavan had to go off injured after 20 minutes.

You could make the case that you shouldn't be allowed draw a kick on a contested ball. Referees judgment but if another player is making an action to pickup, had posession and spilled it. This means one would have to attempt to pick up yourself.
I seen a career finished, a deliberate kick to the head which was done knowing they'd claim it as an attempt at kicking the ball.

We don't help ourselves in the publicity stakes,GAA in total.
I see Kildare have named their panel for the league.
It should be mandatory.
Hard for journalists to make up stories.
Split season has put their jobs in jeopardy.
Why sponsor a county for such a short season

Unless the game gets moved to Sunday It's hard to see it going ahead with the storm this week. The Dubs in full transition with 16 new players on their panel and playing them in the early rounds is the best time to play even more so this year than other years.

JasonN180, a goal is still worth 3 points
