Some brilliant fielding from Mayo.
I'd expect Offaly to try to use the wind for 2 pointers in the 2nd half. How well they can do that I don't know.

3-7 to 1-4 up HT. Took a while to get going after that eqrly goal but well on top by the end of the half. Offaly have that strong wind behind them in the second half.

Once we wiped the sleep from our eyes we looked great. midfield ruling the roost and young Flanagan on fire.

All about the wind tbh , Offaly probably feel they have enough in them to plough on wind assisted

This ref can't be accused of being whistle happy anyway, very few frees.
Quite a few wides from us the only blemish really, but I don't see a minor team kicking multiple 2 pointers.

More goals for Mayo against that Offaly defence so can imagine the nine point lead should be enough even with the wind. Offaly well outnumbering Mayo in support here in the Hyde.

That 3rd goal from offaly was clearly over carried, we are so much the better team but like the connacht final making such hard work of it.

Super win. Those second half goals looked fatal but the lads showed real guts to dig the win out from there.

Lucky in the end, some great fielding, some great goals by Mayo, but also alot left behind scores, that should have been scored. Real worry conceded 8 goals in last two matches against Roscommon and Offaly.
Not sinical enough in second half.
But on saying that, great to get to semi final

Great resolve at the end to dig that one out. Fair play to them.

Great win .
Brilliantly controlled 2nd half against the wind (except for the 3 soft goals!)
Very mature performance for such young guys.
How often have we seen Mayo underage teams lose a game like that
Real grit, spirit, skill, physicality and smarts in this team.
I hope a big Mayo crowd comes out to support them in the semi.

A word in the ref,he let an awful lot go on both sides.Ive no problem with that as long as he's consistent which he was.

Some fantastic battling there in last 15, I thought offaly were in for a 5th goal but brilliant blocking and surrounding the offaly players and just refusal to give in.

S

Brilliant , nice feeling to win that one , thought it was gone from them at one point but good character to see that through . Well done all

Brilliant win.
They really dug it out at the end. Thought the 4th goal would do for them. More forwards coming down the track.
Any hope of Carey or May getting back for the semi?

A real battling gutsy display. Always felt the 9 point lead would be clawed back and hopefully that a lesson learnt by these boys, but credit to them. Hopefully now they really push on now.

I have to commend management. They’ve really turned things around from the start of the season. Who knows how it’ll go from here but they’ve been impressive in how they’ve done business over the past couple of seasons. Sure, it didn’t go well last year v Armagh but much of that was down to the obvious S&C that the Ulster boys are doing as it was men against boys v Arm and Monaghan the season before , but Reilly and Heaney are doing good work. Hopefully now they can beat Kerry. Game by game.

Unforced errors from us today nearly cost us. Wide open at the back. Need a bit of bite from our defenders

R

O

Not sure why they changed tactics in second half. Played it around a lot more rather than going at offaly like they did in first half. Found something to pull out a win in the end but Kerry will be a different kettle of fish

Well done lads. Some serious two-pointers from Conor Hession, one of them dragged us back in front at a crucial moment. They'll have a serious cut against Kerry

@Ontheditch: In theory?

To slow down the phases so Offaly (now assisted by a strong breeze and chasing a relatively large deficit) have fewer opportunities to score in the 30 minutes and pull back that 9 point lead we had at half-time.

In an average game you'll have ~80-90 possessions or phases total per game on average. With ~40-45 of those per side, leading to ~60 shots (~30 per team) & ~40 scores (~20 per team). Those will climb above average when you're playing with a wind (both from more direct transition & mostly from being able to press even more aggressively against the restarts) and fall below average when against a breeze (needing to work it in closer, potentially to more congested areas too which would further drop off the conversion rate).

For each additional minute you hold the ball in the lateral, controlled, sideways, infuriating (whatever way you'd like to describe it personally) play you'd be dropping all of those numbers. For both sides. A quick glance at our seniors who do it a lot shows us with the tightest defence in the Championship [caveats given Sligo/Leitrim/Cavan dropping the average level of teams played compared to other sides] but also with the 3rd lowest scores for. So in theory it's helpful to do if you're the one ahead or against the conditions, and feels fairly awful if you're the one chasing (with the hope being lads will rush out of shape on the press and leave gaps for exposing - which to be fair to Offaly they avoided really well, great coaching, while managing to maintain a decent press right up to half-way).

Doesn't work especially well when making slips in retention or giving away turnovers (opens you up for fast counters and goal risks as we saw today) or where doing it causes your own conversion rate to tank off a cliff (really important to keep the scoreboard ticking over or it's a war of attrition you'll struggle to win), but certainly has a time and a place in games. You'll very likely score less & drop efficiency (slowing down the transitions means you're hitting a set defence and more pressure nearly every time) but also, in theory, concede less (again, assuming you're not getting hit frequently for goals from the attempt of doing it).

(Probably sounds like I'm keen, while I wouldn't be a big fan. At all.

I'd much prefer going with a deeper stacked defence and aiming to break hard and fast with relatively low numbers to retain enough defensive structure to avoid too many goal chances... but much easier said than done and the 'right' choice will come down to a subjective call on how the two sides stack up on the day for legs/fitness/form/confidence/momentum & how the 11v11 stack up on 1v1s. With calls like that sometimes being made subconsciously by the lads on the field even more than the ones on the line who might be screaming for them to do something very different.)

Don't worry about Kerry. That group of young Mayo gasúrs have it all. Fielding was brilliant. Who do we bate after Kerry.

@TsuDhoNimh

100%
It amazes me that this has to be explained to people.

Not having a go at you personally @ontheditch but there seems to be a few online questioning why the change in tactics. It was the obvious thing to do from management and players but at the same time it had to be executed well which it was.Limited chances for Offaly which was just aswell as they were looking like scoring any time they got the ball I'm 2nd half

O

Ontheditch says:

@fw. Thanks for the wrap in the knuckles, but I certainly wouldn't see it as the obvious thing to do, imo.
I have no issues with TsuDhoNim's explanation and the theory of it all.
But Mayo were in a good rhythm. They were finding gaps in the Offaly defence and playing against the wind was not going to change that.
As far as executing it well is concerned, they were almost caught out by inviting Offaly to come at them. It's underage, there will be turnovers, and you've got to keep the scoreboard ticking over.
It could have been another game we could be using the term 'should have' but credit to the lads, they found enough in final minutes to push on.
There were some fine performances, and it augers well for the future, but it's keep the foot on the pedal for me.
