LGFA Connacht final the main focus this weekend

Another weekend is upon us and there are matches on which involve the county, both directly and indirectly.

The main game of direct interest is the LGFA Connacht SFC final. Like the lads, it’s between ourselves and Galway and the venue, Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, is the same too.

This provincial final takes place on Sunday with a 1pm throw-in. The ticket link for it is here and Spórt TG4 are streaming it live on their YouTube channel so I’ll embed the stream here as well on the day for ease of viewing.

Galway had a handy win over us in the group stage of this provincial campaign, winning by 2-13 to 0-9 a few weeks back. They’ll obviously be strong favourites to repeat the dose on Sunday, not least given they’ve a number of first team players back in their ranks for this game.

As well as provincial honours, the outcome of Sunday’s Connacht final will also determine where ourselves and Galway end up in for the forthcoming group stage of the Championship. The winners will be in a group with Donegal and Tipperary while the losers will be bracketed with the Munster champions (which is almost certain to be Kerry – they play Waterford in the Munster decider on Sunday) and Cork.

We’ve named our team for Sunday, by the way, and here it is:

Mayo (LGFA Connacht final v Galway, 25/5/2025): Julia Gawalkiewicz (Charlestown); Lucy Wallace (Burrishoole), Nicola O’Malley (Westport), Ciara Durkan (Knockmore); Sherin El Massry (Westport), Danielle Caldwell (Castlebar Mitchels, captain), Ella Brennan (Charlestown); Hannah Reape (Knockmore), Ciara Whyte (Kilmoremoy); Ava McDonnell (St Brigid’s), Saoirse Lally (Westport), Chelsea Doherty (Charlestown); Erin Murray (Ballyhaunis), Kathryn Sullivan (Castlebar Mitchels), Sinéad Walsh (MacHale Rovers).

The best of luck to the women in the big game on Sunday. We’re aiming to have a Final Whistle pod from MacHale Park, which, assuming we do, should be up on Patreon a bit later that day.

Castlebar is also the venue for Saturday’s U17 hurling Celtic Challenge semi-final match against Meath. This game throws in at 3.30pm that afternoon and details of the Mayo panel for this game are here.

A match which doesn’t directly involve us but is nonetheless of significant interest is the All-Ireland SFC Group Stage Round 1 clash between Donegal and Tyrone.

This one takes place on Saturday evening at MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey, where throw-in is 7pm. The game is being streamed live on GAA+.

Also of interest this Sunday is the Mayo hurlers’ meet and greet session at Tooreen, which gets underway at midday. The lads take on Roscommon the following weekend in the Rackard Cup final and so this is a great chance to meet the players and give them a worthy send-off before they head for Croke Park. More details on that are here.

Finally, there’s another round of club fixtures taking place this weekend, full details on which are here.

Good luck to our women. No matter what goes on in our county it's always exciting to see the green and red running out onto the field. They are a great bunch of women and I wish them the very best. Why not upset the odds. It's been done before.
It's no foregone conclusion in munster. Waterford are coming strong again. I wouldn't be surprised to see them turning that one over.
Good luck to the hurlers and to all our teams. Give your best. Always a joy to see Mayo in full flow.
