Ladies lose again but hurlers win

There were two matches involving teams from the county this afternoon, producing one defeat and one victory.

Starting with the loss, this came in the LGFA National League Division One game against Kerry at Swinford. This is proving to be an extremely tough League campaign for the ladies and today’s 2-8 to 0-4 defeat to the All-Ireland champions was their fifth straight loss of the year.

Shorn today of the services of key players Aoife Geraghty and main score getter Sinéad Walsh, it was always going to be a hard ask to get a result against the All-Ireland champions. So it proved, as goals from Danielle O’Leary and Síofra O’Shea helped the visitors ease to a ten-point win.

I’m not sure if the mathematicians would agree but it’s got to be all but certain now that we’re going to suffer relegation this year. There are matches to come against Waterford and Kildare, which you’d normally think would be within our capability to win, but, with no points from five outings, it doesn’t look as if victories in both of those games will be enough to keep the county in Division One.

There was better news from up the road in Tooreen this afternoon where the county’s hurlers enjoyed a big win over Roscommon in their NHL Division Three clash. That one finished 3-25 to 1-12 and it means we’re now second in the table, two points behind pace setters London, against whom we suffered our only defeat so far in the campaign last weekend.

We’ll have a Final Whistle pod for club members from Swinford on the Mayo/Kerry game, which will be up on Patreon a bit later on.
