Kevin McStay steps away from role for health reasons

Kevin McStay steps away from role for health reasons

Mayo GAA have just announced that Kevin McStay has stepped away from his position of Mayo manager to deal with “some personal health issues”. Mayo GAA’s statement on this is here.

In his absence, assistant manager Stephen Rochford takes over the role for Mayo’s upcoming games.

All we can do as fans is to wish Kevin all the best as he deals with issues that are far more important than football. Get well soon, Kevin.

May 26, 2025 at 9:17 pm

Sad to hear that. Kevin McStay is a great Mayo man who did his county great service both as a player and as a manager. One had only to read his autobiography to realise his passion for his county. I always felt he got the job too late and should have been appointed manager in 2014 after James stepped down. The Mayo team were at the peak of their powers and who knows, he might just have got them over the line and then history would have looked upon him in a very different way. It is no surprise to hear he has stepped aside. This episode should also be a lesson to all those who verbally abuse guys who go out and do their best for their county. The vitriol spewed out towards Kevin, the management team and some of the players since the Connacht final has been truly appalling. Not so much on this site which is very well moderated, ( so much credit to you WJ ) but more so on other forums. Such abuse must have a serious impact. These guys are just human beings at the end of the day and they try to do the best they can. We used to be proud of our reputation as supporters loyal to our team but that has changed, especially since 2021 when we thought we were entitled to win the All Ireland and then lashed out at everyone when we failed to get over the line. Remember all the guys who wear the jersey and who look after the teams are someone’s sons, brothers ;fathers etc. I don’t buy into this nonsense that they put themselves forward for the job and so should be able to take the abuse. Best of luck to Stephen Rochford, no stranger to such abuse either and best of luck to the players for the remainder of the season. Go out and do yourselves and your families proud and try to leave that jersey in a better place than you found it.

We were spoilt up until 2021. I’m not so sure a Mayo management group or players have ever come under as much pressure really. Judged on what came before them. An unforgiving environment especially for a team of young lads in transition the past few years. Not right. It’s only a game/hobby. Thank you to Kevin for his efforts. Mind yourself and don’t let the noise in.

Maurice Brosnan reporting in the Examiner on the meeting today in Knockranny. He makes reference to harrassment with abusive and threatening emails being sent to members of the county board and others, plus meddling and interference in the living situations of senior players living in Dublin. Extremely bizarre and borderline criminal from the sounds of things. I could take a guess at who's behind it, but it goes to show the stress and abuse going on behind the scenes in Mayo football right now. Completely crazy stuff, out of control.

Wishing Kevin a speedy recovery, and some peace and quiet from what sounds like utter toxicity going on in the county right now.

His health permitting, I would love to see him continue his involvement in Mayo football, with his knowledge, leadership skills, passion and pride and perhaps he could be used, if he was interested, in a CEO/Tsar/development or advisory role. Obviously, personal abuse is completely out of order. However the fact remains that the Mayo CB have been completely inept in their handling of several matters. Much of the criticism directed at them by Mayo supporters is certainly warranted. Training facilities for our Mayo teams are abysmal. We are miles behind most counties. It’s utterly unacceptable! We have no real leadership and a complete lack of innovation. We need wholesale change at the top of the structures in Mayo GAA.

They are indeed. From what I see there is plenty of giving out but very few wanting to step up. Any club member can out themselves forward as county board delegate at their club agm. From what I see though it’s usually people who get that gig that won’t rock the boat or in a certain click. It’s up to club members who what change to unite behind someone who will do that. Very little interest though from what I can see.

Clare - A mayo supporter gave 5 young lads a dig out by converting some warehouse space into living accommodation for them. He was obviously aware of cost of rent in Dublin and the financial pressures young players/students would be under due to the amount of time they have to commit to football. Well done to the person who tried to help out young players and shame on the ‘supporter’ who forced them out into expensive accommodation.

M

Moyside says:

May 27, 2025 at 8:57 am

Reading between the lines, without naming names, but it's pretty obvious who owns the industrial unit, I don't know the man, but I'm sure it was provided to the 5 players, who let's be honest, are likely students, in the best interests of supporting the 5 guys. The cost of accommodation throughout the country and in Dublin in particular is astronomical. I'm sure they paid little or no rent. Yes it's a highly unusual circumstance...but we should not be critical of somebody doing what they can to support, unlike the poor example of a person who reported the matter, who let's be honest, we all know who it was and who is behind the online abusive campaign. Said individual might have had and may still do have some valid points, but to be honest has gone about dealing with it in the most disgusting manner and in total contradiction of what it means to be a good, decent mayo person who has a genuine love of the county and who wants to see what we all want, Mayo winning Sam...its true a tip to toe change needs to happen in the county board and until every single person from the clubs to the top of the county board are working together to harness and develop the gaa in mayo, sadly we might never see us reaching the holy grail... change is needed, but the men and women in charge have to see it and not be afraid to give up power for the betterment of everyone...

Its clear from even the most recent comments here that change is required at CB Exev level. God so might but that’s been plain to see for years now. What more evidence do we need!? When you have a former manager calling things out as ‘farcical’ then you know there’s an issue. Last night in Westport feels very much like a circling of the wagons exercise. Am I right? Did the delegates unanimously give a vote of confidence to all the members of the board?? If so then there’s a massive disconnect between supporters, delegates/CB exec. The relationship between the latter and the ‘unnamed individual’ appears to be bordering on venomous. The biggest losers are the Mayo players and is, the loyal supporters. There is no way in hell the CB have the confidence of the supporters. No way.

These are sad times for Mayo. We’ve often craved a messiah type figure to manage our team to Sam. What we actually need is a leader at CB level, because it’s a total mess. Once again, we are the laughing stock of the country. That vote last night is head in the hands stuff.

Here are a few more links to reports on last night'a extraordinary county board meeting. It's worth everyone's time reading these as it will help to make people aware of the level of abuse that's been occurring and the unacceptable nature of it: Western People (https://www.westernpeople.ie/sport/gaa/toxic-threats-force-mayo-gaa-officials-to-contact-garda%C3%AD_arid-59219.html), Connaught Telegraph (https://www.con-telegraph.ie/2025/05/26/gaa-president-jarlath-burns-condemns-toxic-activity-targeted-at-mayo-gaa-officers/), Mayo News (https://www.mayonews.ie/news/gaa/1811432/vicious-and-nasty-gaa-president-on-alleged-emails-to-mayo-gaa-officers.html), RTÉ https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2025/0526/1515109-allegations-of-abuse-campaign-dominate-mayo-meeting/), Irish Independent (https://www.independent.ie/sport/gaelic-games/mayo-gaa-and-jarlath-burns-condemn-toxic-online-campaign-aimed-at-county-board/a1780821768.html), Irish Times (https://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gaelic-games/2025/05/27/mayo-gaa-deny-claims-of-financial-mismanagement-and-reveal-threats-to-county-board-members/).

O

OnTheFence says:

From reading Maurice's piece, it looks like we got few questions answered and may even have more questions to follow.

Burns/Ryan refuted the allegations, yet in response to this, the accusers on the other side of the debate claim to have proof to back up their allegations. The statement from GAA's top table appeared clear in intent but unless I'm missing something, did they actually provide proof?

Ryan did state that they were skirting the lines of legal trouble with regards to a Non-Disclosure Agreement, so maybe they said as much as they were able to. Either way, it seems like this is far from the end of this saga.

As for the story of the 5 lads booted out of accommodation, its not a nice story to see at all. That being said, it sounds like an emotional appeal from Burns etc. to try and take attention away from the bigger picture.

Myself, I'm still quite skeptical (as my name suggests!). Some of the accusers are staunchly defending what they say, and will know quite well the dangers of what they say being untrue, with one in particular being a journalist who would understand the implications of a journalist being found to be spreading lies/untruths. Another prominent voice has a legal background, and I'm sure they didn't speak up without thinking about the ramifications should they be proven wrong.

This is not an episode in Mayo GAA's history that we can skip past and hope it will fade into memory, I fear.

People talk about changing the county board, someone else rightly said it’s a democracy. But “just change it” is simplistic in the extreme, those of you who are club members should know how difficult it is to get good people to sit on those committees.
Now multiply that in terms of workload and responsibility as a county board committee member, very challenging to get people to do that

M

Moyside says:

May 27, 2025 at 11:03 am

Your right Eastcork, absolutely that's why a more professional approach should be taken...WillieJoe and plenty more on here, myself included, are blue in face calling for a ceo to be put in place with a small, hardworking team of administrators and other specialist people around them to work with the county board to improve training/coaching at all levels, to work with and lead large scale capital spending on the centre of excellence and other facilities desperately needed around the county, no group of unpaid people in the county board can be expected to do it. I could wholeheartedly guarantee that if the right structure put in place or a plan put in place, the large mayo supporters inside and outside the county would happily give the money needed along with other sources of money from government grants, gaa funding etc to finally put professional structures in place. It certainly won't guarantee success on the pitch, but sure to god we all know the current structures has not.

O

OnTheFence says:

May 27, 2025 at 11:05 am

@Eastcorkexile, you're correct, and it brings in another question:

At what point does the roles of the County Board Officials become too much for a volunteer to handle? I think County Boards everywhere are approaching a point where we may need to employ full time staff to fulfill these roles.

Its bigger the jobs are getting.

M

Mayonaze says:

May 27, 2025 at 11:35 am

@Eastcorkexile; you're right and if Mayo is anything to go by it sure is evidence of it being difficult to get good people into these roles!!

WJ - personal abuse is unacceptable. It appears from the reports from last night's meeting that the GAA were looking to place emphasis on this more than anything else. However as @OnTheFence said (and I'd agree with the post) this feels like it's going to run longer and go deeper and what is hugely important is that we get the truth. I fear we won't or certainly not for a very long time. The stuff that's going on is enormously detrimental to Mayo GAA and by that I specifically mean the development and progression of our teams. It's our players who will lose most. We have fallen well behind the curve and it's very concerning for the vast majority of loyal supporters. Our goal is to win Sam Maguire. That's it. We need the correct structures in place in terms of finances, infrastructure and personnel. We are miles off it and that falls on the Co Board, so I cannot understand how they received unanimous backing last night unless delegates felt pressure to do so. It stinks to high heaven and from the outside, doesn't appear very 'democratic'!

Great article, well put, can't argue with a word of it. Mayo football may feel like life and death at times but there are much more important things like family, friends and your health.

Yeah I was in the stand I couldn't believe the cursing and the abuse after is well. We were all dissapointed but there's no need for it .

I was at the Cavan game and I heard no abuse where I was on the Albany end of the MacHale Road - in fact, the atmosphere was extremely subdued and more an eery silence in the last few mins. The only time I can recall any noise was when Paddy came on and there were some handbags. That was all. The ridiculously small attendance tells us everything.

Maybe I'm only one who sees the great irony in called for respect online in an article that also says that bill Shankly was a bit of a fool.

Like most here I'm a good while hanging around football pitches in one capacity or another and bar the occasional moron shouting obsenities I hadn't ever noticed it at the scale as it was at the Cavan game...I was actually taken aback. It was from the terrace and not just aimed at management. C.Reape was too slow with his first kick out so he got it...Mattie failed to hold it so he got it...the ref was a 'C',the Cavan lads, all C's,no subs coming in so the the sideline a shower a C's and on it went.
A young couple had their 3 small children at maybe their first game asked for them to ease up on account of the kids all around...that lasted about 2 minutes till the next controversial one and our heroes were away in full force again.
The young couple moved on. Now these were not young fellas that had a few cans on the bus on the way up. They were old enough to be grandfathers. No angel myself at games but usually the side eye from my significant other is enough to get me to cop myself on,and ya we as supporters need to keep ourselves well in check or else we will end up like the crowd across who attend another code.

Paraic oHora gave a great answer in the podcast when asked about leaders in the dressing room:
He said he took no heed of what they said but watched what they did when the first ball came their way or had to scrap for a broken ball.

@2 Hops - I'd well believe it.

I have pointed it out here a few times in the past and people didn't take it very well when I did, but for all the "Mayo are fantastic fans" that's out there, there are plenty that don't like us as supporters.

I go all over the country with work and its not just in Roscommon and Galway that we wouldn't be overly loved. The general view is that we can be abusive at matches towards the opposition and the refs, and that plenty of our fans can be over-excited/over-animated.

I will caveat this by saying I don't like the guy, but I have heard people fans shout appalling things at Philly McMahon. We're also well able to abuse our own and I think of some of the stuff McDonald, Maughan, Horan etc had to put up with over the years.

This is just a post to say that there is a view out there that we are hard to stomach at times and we should be aware of that.

Get well soon, Kevin. Mayo should beat Tyrone with ease next Sunday in Omagh, as only the likes of Cavan drew with Tyrone last year in Breffni Park. Kevin McStay managed Mayo to a National League title in 2023 in his first year as manager of Mayo. It took Tyrone 120 years to win the same National League title. Kevin has brought Mayo to 4 finals in 3 years (2 National League and 2 Connaught finals). If Mayo do not want Kevin as manager, he's more than welcome to come to Cavan, as everyone deserves to win. Best of health to you Kevin, from a win, lose or draw Cavan supporter. Kevin you're a gentleman.

@Cavan in Blue

Don't think any of us are thinking that mayo will win with ease on Saturday .
Tyrone are under a new manager and have momentum and confidence after beating Donegal to.

Where mayo are at a low point.

@Unstoppable

It might be uncomfortable to here but you're dead right there. Donegal and Kerry in particular seem to have serious problems with us as fans. If I had a euro for every time a Donegal person has mentioned behavior at the 2013 quarter final to me, I wouldn't be rich but I might have enough for a modest holiday. Then obviously the Dubs don't like us bar some. At least that one is much more understandable

We're no longer "the countries second team" anyway as we've been painted in the past, that's for sure. It's a pity because 95% of it is down to a small portion of gombeens

@Cavan in Blue your on to something there...Man United paid was it £10 million compensation for Rubin Aruimim ? The Mayo County Board might just consider letting Cavan avail of the services of any and all Managers, ex Managers of Mayo for a similar sum. Now that's a deal our chairman and the GAA president could sell to the Mayo public. That figure 10 million just sticks in my head for some reason.. No wonder Jarleth Burns was praising the Mayo County Board after Mayo loosing the League Final..I think when you add up all the figures Croke Park end up with a €4 million profit..Mayo must pay €9 million.. but all will be well when Cavan pay us the €10 million.. everyone a winner.

It’s going to be interesting to see if there’s any change in tactics or personnel for the game this weekend seeing as Rochford is “taking over “ the running of the show.

Very best wishes to Kevin in his recovery. Nobody can question his commitment and the delight and honor he expressed when he got the Mayo job. Legitimate honest critique of tactics is absolutely fine but when this crosses that line there should be no place for it in Mayo GAA.

A seriously bleak few days for our county on and off the field. While there is probably no proof that the vile abuse that Kevin had to put up with was the cause of his hospitalisation, one thing is for certain it did not help him. No one has the right to abuse another individual like that. Pure cowards who wouldn’t have the courage or decency to volunteer for their club let alone take a role in managing a team. But they’re great people in a mob or on the keyboard. At the rate things are going why would anyone put their life on hold representing the county team when all they end up getting is abuse. And we wonder why lads feck off to the other side of the world to enjoy life and “turn their back on the Gaa at home”. Then we read the toxicity addressed toward the county board by certain individuals.. They are “not fit for purpose “. So do something about it. Get yourself into a position as club delegate. Use your influence at Co Board level. We are becoming an embarrassment and it’s more off the field than on it. Most right thinking people are aware that our Co team is not great at the moment certainly in comparison to our team of 10 years ago, but these people do deserve some respect as indeed does anyone who gets a Mayo jersey. Honestly you’d be embarrassed by some “supporters”. Look at the word. It means to support. Of course people are entitled to opinions and constructive criticism but it’s gone way beyond that of late. You’d swear we had a divine right to win everything, that we should be better than everyone else. And all this in a county which hasn’t seen Sam for over 70 years.

Well said, to win just once. Nobody should be subjected to abuse and harassment or have lies or hate-filled bile posted about them on social media. As someone who's had all that aimed at them on and off over a six-year period, I know full well what it's like. Hopefully, last night proves a turning point, in that at last this divisive toxicity has been met head-on, which was great to see.

Regarding the abuse Kevin was subject too daring the Cavan game.

Unfortunately there are examples of this behaviour in every county.

Unfortunately 2006 Declan OSullivan one of the finest players to wear the Green and Gold was booed when he was substituted against Cork by his own supporters.

Tommy Lyons was abused after Dublins defeat to Westmeath with that famous picture of a Dub holding a child's hand in the Cusack roaring dogs abuse.

I'd hope that all of the people involved in all of these incidents and in Mayo are ashamed of themselves now.

Unfortunately it's a very ugly side of sport.

Heartening to see the acknowledgment of Kevin McStay’s huge contribution to Mayo GAA, both as a player and a manager. Well done to all the above contributors on this chat. Particularly disappointing in the last week was the editorial headline from a Castlebar based newspaper. A paper that has done quite well out of the GAA.

I have been critical of Kevin and Stephens tactics and players particularly natural forwards that have been left out and lost during there term in charge of Mayo, but I would never ever hurl abuse from the sidlelines, that is the lowest of the low, as Klopp said about Trents Alexander Arnolds abuse from a minority of Liverpool fans the weekend , this is not us!! Wishing Kevin all the best and hoping the lads can put in a performance for him the weekend in Omagh!!
