It’s funny how in the piece linked earlier, the Sunday Game analysis spoke about how good Kerry are at winning kick outs and marvelled at the kick out strategy. It then proceeded to show clips of Kerry actually committing fouls. Why wasn’t it called for what it is, cheating?

In fairness that’s a very strong Kerry team on paper. It remains to be seen if a few of the returning lads are at full tilt for 70
but they’ve good subs in Geaney, O Sullivan and O Beaglaoich. The best approach is no fear, tear into it and see what happens. The best way to win is at the breakdown as 1-15 they’re the best in the Country. I can say we match them in a lot of positions but for sure they outmatch us in a few.Jack OC said a number of weeks back it’s all about the kickouts. That’s changed (turnovers are happening more often now) but kickouts are still the no. 1 factor in winning a game. Paudie at 13 gives him free rein as a corner back unlikely is to follow him out all the way to midfield. Might be better for one of our midfielders to track him when he comes deep and a forward to track their free midfielder. I’d say man mark David but zonally mark Paudie with good communication and swapping. Once he goes up for his own attacks a corner back goes back onto him. It does however mean we’ve a free back most of the time who can operate as a sweeper. The media all think we’ll go man to man, I don’t think we will. It will likely be a hybrid system.

It might sound crazy, but hear me out...AOS hasn't seen game time in the last 3 games and nobody, Mayo fans or the opposition are remotely expecting AOS to start or possibly even get on the pitch. BUT, there is a bit of logic in a late change and start him in full forward with a strict instruction not to come back outside the 21 yard line, with Ryan moving out to chf for the dirty ball. AOS is very quite likely not to score, but what it would do is upscuttle kerry, who might not know what to do, even for 10 or 15 mins. Force them to double up on AOS which would create a bit extra space for 2 guys beside him who could do some real damage, if kerry drop a man back in front of aos, create extra space outside for ryan/ for our 2 point shooters.

It's not a plan which would work for the full 70 mins, but any plan which disrupts the opposition even for 15 mins in a final could be worth it..that's why we need multiple plans for stages of the 70 mins, mix things up. At worst, ur replacing one player ( probably coen) who lacks mobility/speed with AOS who is also lacking the same...AOS could also give a dig out at midfield also if required..

I stress, it's not a 70 minute plan but it could work. Key thing is to have multiple gamelans to disrupt kerry, knock them outta their stride..

We dont kick high ball in , we kick accurate passes from Flynn Loftus or Towey . Direct runner onto or onto chest ball for fast turning , jam on brakes , change direction forwards .
Not big lumbering, big hop , slow slow solo and get overturned type forwards .

AOS had his day and we thank him for what he did , maybe he can help in some form but never in fullforward

Kerry thrive off their aristocratic stature. We've beaten them a couple of times in championship in modern times so we've no fear. If Kerry up a gear on Sunday, we'll struggle to beat them. But I've a feeling there's a few of them carrying niggles and not moving their best. Seanie O'Shea especially. He looked to be moving strangely against the Dubs. We should put one of our speedsters on him and make him sweat and puff on Sunday. That'd be a huge boost to Mayo.

Honestly Moyside. If Mayo named the team and AOS in full forward and Beirne dropped. I wouldn't bother watching the game. No offence to Aiden. What I meant was, it's likely coen will be starting, kerry are likely to expect he will. Its a possibility to move Rod out to chf, he goes out there at times anyway and still a threat from there. Maybe aos isn't the right man, but putting a bigger, mobile man in ff( possibly even ruane, would give kerry something different to consider. Having a big man on the edge does not mean u have to lump it on all of the time or at all. But what it does do is create doubt/a bit of uncertainty for kerry. Get kerry thinking, do we need to double up on this big man, drop another man deeper away from their arc. It might distract kerry corner backs away from kobe and beirne if they are worried about a possible high ball into a big man such as matty.

Matty could also drift out to our half forward line for kickout options, as kobe does also.

It's just I'm trying to suggest kerry will be very focused on shutting down kobe, Rod and beirne and will try to hammer them. Why not throw a grenade in their to worry them. We really need to think of others ways to upset/disrupt kerry

Lots of people predicting Kerry will be looking to get out of the traps fast. I think it's possible they'll do the opposite and slow it down. Mayo thrive in chaos and the faster the pace, the more likely chaos becomes. Kerry might want to eliminate any possibility of that, and instead aim to slow it down, slowly frustrate and suffocate us and pick us off then at their leisure. Playing with youthful abandon and instinct requires a certain pace and a level of freedom of the park. Not sure Kerry are going to allow that.

@moyside.i'd be all for throwing Jack a curveball or two, we have to have at least some element of surprise on the day and Aido has always enjoyed toppling Kerrymen. It would be a high risk move but for a 15 minute spell could cause a bit of mayhem.

I'm leaning towards Kerry looking for a quick start. They'll want to demoralise us early in the game, à la 04 and 06. I don't think they respect us enough to play in the controlled manner they did against the Dubs. They'll want to win by playing pure football. I'm expecting a game similar to the Galway v Kerry final a few years back.

I have been one of Aidan o sheas biggest supporters over the years but I can’t see any scenario in that he will play on Sunday unless we are 10 points up with 5 minutes to go .it has been evident for some time that his legs have gone but he is up there with McHale ciaran McDonald’ Andy Moran and lee keegan as one of the greats

Kerry will want to start like a house on fire, this gamne will be won and lost in the first 20mins. If Mayo are within a point or 2 at that stage of the game they have a chance. This is a monumnetal ask though, Andy will need a curve ball and I'm guessing one of TC, PD, or DOC will start with a couple of unconvential positional switches thrown in...

If Andy includes Aidan in 26 , he must think he has something to add.

It makes perfect sense having Aido in the 26 given his experience. It's highly unlikely he'll get game time but you just never know. If nothing else, he will help settle the younger lads. I just can't see him on merit coming in ahead of other lads, even for a small number of minutes as there are lads ahead of him now in every line.
We just need to leave it in Andy's hands now.

McGinley and Fitzmaurice showed how Coen in particular reads the game, attacking the kickouts but looping in behind to position in the danger areas deliberately leaving his marker once he knows the ball can’t be reached. If he’s not started his replacement will need to do similar. They also showed how we’re willing to risk one pointers while reducing the risk of 2’s and goals. I think we should start Coen because there are so many tactics and need to focus and he’s the player who best reads the game. Replace him with pace in the 2nd half. If he’s doesn’t start it should be Paddy or Diarmaid who will similarly stick to task. At 11 we have a choice of Towey (short but good half vs Louth, Loftus (good distribution but can be targeted by runners), Ryan in 2nd half or Kobe (who can’t really tackle at this level). Another option there is Mattie who I’ve seen in club games at 11. He’s a good option because he has a great shot off the wrong side of the goal. The forecast for Sunday is nice temperature but diagonal 26kph breeze from the Nally end. There needs to be a game plan for play with and against it as it’s not insignificant. Playing against would need to stay within 6 or 7 by half time.

Ah jaysus lads are there still some posters lobbying for AOS to play, despite the mountains of evidence that it just hasn't been happening for him for a long time, why would it suddenly be different on the biggest day of the year against Kerry, we now play an exciting fluid style with lots of movement and scoring from our forwards and forwards able to win their own ball. Why would we go back to slowing things up and wandering round the pitch

He will do well to see any gametime on Sunday too, Loftus/Conroy/Ruane/McHale 4 certs to come on so only really 1 sub spot left.

As to how we start the game cahir o kane made a great point that a lot will come down to the coin toss, its clear now for a while (as seen again in semis and tailtean) that canal end is very much the scoring goal with a strong wind behind it, if you win the toss you elect to shoot into canal end in 2nd half after cagey first half

I would definitely have Aidan o Shea in the 26 for his team talks alone but subs are often carried for a full season without being used

The only role I could see Aido fulfilling is a bit of piggery in midfield for a few minutes at the end of the game. But with that you run the risk of one of their middle 8 players attacking without being tracked.

Am interested to see what we do with Gavin White. Paddy Durcan would have been a serious match up for him if we was fit & free of injury worries. Thinking back to 2019, Paddy made mincemeat of Ryan McHugh & Jack McCaffrey - McCaffrey went on to put in a phenomenal performance in the final against Kerry

can't see what AOS or Brickendon are there for. Surely better options the county for the 3 year plan. Loughlin unlucky but may have lost form. Can Andy keep his head on the line? If yes they have the talent to win this.

No big surprises in the named squad, really the only spot up for grabs was the number 11 which was a coin toss between Loftus and Towey, we've gone for the more physical option.

I prefer to see Conor Loftus there instead of Towey. I think he has a steadying influence and makes the right decision. I really feel sorry for Fergal Boland. I would potentially have him in the subs before Aidan or Dawson. Aidan is not suited to the new rules. Having said that our best subs are Kelly, Durcan, O'Connor, McHale and Towey. Ruane played poorly under McStay but he appears to be energised in his few appearances to date. So I would include him with the aforementioned. I think we probably have the best first 15 we can pick.
