Hurling the focus this weekend

Hurling the focus this weekend

For the first time in a while there are no inter-county football matches involving the county on this week. Instead, it’s a rare weekend in which the hurlers take centre-stage, of which more anon.

Because the U20 footballers qualified directly for the Connacht final, they now have to wait to see who’ll they’ll be up against in next week’s provincial decider.

The Connacht U20 semi-final between Roscommon and Sligo takes place tomorrow evening (Wednesday) at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. Throw-in there is 8pm and, for those who fancy heading along, the ticket link for the game is here.

The county’s Minor footballers, by the way, have a week off ahead of their Connacht semi-final against Galway. That game is on Friday week and, like the Nestor Cup decider on the Sunday, it’ll be played at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. Throw-in there on 2nd May is at 6.30pm.

So, back to the hurlers who, with two wins from two outings, are going great guns so far in the Rackard Cup. This coming Saturday they entertain Louth in Round 3 and that game gets underway at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park at 3pm. The ticket link for it is here (though note that link says that tickets will be available there “soon”).

Should Roscommon win tonight the final will be in Tuam Stadium and should Sligo win the final will be Hyde Park next Wednesday.

On the Galway v Mayo U17 semi final surely the sensible option for the Connacht GAA is to switch it to Sunday 2pm before the Galway v Mayo senior final at 4pm?

Thinking behind not playing under 17 game before a senior game is the young age of the players and the extra pressure on them. Then just a year later they can play adult competitions at all levels and third level. In fairness some of them are only 16 years.
