Right, it’s definitely time to down tools around here for the festive season.
It’s been another full year, with plenty of action on and off the field from start to finish. There’s another year of football to get going again too, ahead of which there’s a welcome upturn in optimism about how that may go for us.
Before then, however, it’s time to switch off for a short while. Thanks to everyone who passed this way over the last year and thanks too to our many podcast listeners. Happy Christmas to all.

Merry Christmas John & family, all the team here on the blog along with it's wider community & everyone else involved at all levels with Mayo GAA & Mayo LGFA.
A few 'fun' (and by fun I mean wildly inaccurate based on nothing but vibes) predictions for the year ahead...
POTY: David McBrien
YPOTY: John MacMonagle (really tight race this year - could easily be any of 6 or 7. If any of the u20s stay with the seniors for the year they could easily push)
Connacht: Mayo (I was going to say Galway so Jack has a clear "we were written off this year" in his back-pocket, but couldn't bring myself to do it).
Ulster: Tyrone (as always in Ulster it's pretty much a toss of a coin, themselves and Donegal neck and neck as favourites for me)
Munster: Kerry
Leinster: Dublin
Winner... I'm genuinely delighted to say I haven't a breeze.
Wide open again this year where any of 6 or 7 teams have a really genuine opportunity to step up, while any of 10 or 12 have the ability to have a big say in things. Not all those that might will step up, we'll likely see similar fancied faces towards the business end of the Championship, but with all sorts of thrills and spills along the way.
Kerry will deservedly be favourites, but I'll throw in on Tyrone again and figure Malachy will have upped the bar a couple more levels (his addition of Peter Hughes to the backroom team one I'd be incredibly envious of) and the younger lads will be better placed to add to that squad depth.

Happy Christmas WJ.
Quietly excited and optimistic about the season ahead. Andy will be nothing if positive, and so far has been refreshingly honest.
Real blast of youth coming our way so we’ll need to be patient, and that’s not always easy. But hopefully the likes of Cillian returning can add that little bit of ballast when needed.
Hon Mayo.

December 28, 2025 at 12:15 pm
Yes patience will be needed,I am old enough to remember Mayo winning the minor final in 71 followed by the 21 final in 74 but when beaten by Sligo after a replay the team was dismantled.
What a waste of talent.

Just a player that really seems to under the radar with this Mayo team at the moment is Donnacha McHugh for me he gave the best man marking display on David Clifford of the year in the League game in McHale park.
I think David had such a hard time with Donnacha there he stitched him up in Croker for the League Final getting him booked early and was harrasing the ref for protection and not forgetting his performance on Michael Murphy in Roscommon before he went off injured, Murphy was completely taking out of the game until he went off and then gets a massive 2 pointer to swing the game.

Sometimes a player's versatility works against him. Since Lee's retirement he has kind of become our nullifier, and maybe he's happy in that role but for me I'd like to see him given a position and given the time to bed in there.
If McB is to be at 6 then I'd be giving Donnacha the fb position. I think he could make that his own....,tough and abrasive, more of the dog in him than in Bric imo.

Not sure what capacity of Charlestown is but think around 3500 was the number going around for cross Westport semi final.
Hopefully get close to that for Sligo game
Willie Joe says:
December 30, 2025 at 5:23 pm
According to Humphrey Kelleher’s ‘A Place to Play’ book on GAA grounds, the capacity at Charlestown is 3,000.

In 1962 Connacht championship Mayo and Sligo played out a draw in Charlestown (Sligo won the replay). No idea what the crowd was but I was only eight and found it hard to see past the men in front of us. I think there was a fair bit of concrete seating in those days.

As a young lad remember great games in Charlestown, one great game Sligo and Roscommon, Aiden Brady, Gerry O Mally and if course Mickey Kearns, when game was over a few of us would walk around the concrete seats that went around the field and would find a few shillings that was dropped when fans were buying tubs of ice cream that was thrown across the seats and the money passed out to the seller. Never paid to get in either, went around the fields and came in from top end where there was no officials.

Would like to see Andy experiment with ROD on the 40 during League, when you have the likes of Beirne, Cillian , Carr and Tommy to play inside now.I remember seeing ROD play for Belmullet v Westport at 11 in an Under 21 final a few years back.He played the role to perfection with pinpoint passes into the Belmullet FF Line it would free him up more and gives him more chances of 2 pointers, abit like Clifford in the All Ireland Final.
