Games coming up

Mayo-related matches are coming thick and fast at us over the next few days and into the weekend. Here’s a quick run-down of what’s on. (Spoiler alert: there’s a lot).

The action starts tomorrow evening at Tuam Stadium where the county’s U20 footballers face Galway in Round 2 of the Connacht Championship. Throw-in at St Jarlath’s Park is 5.30pm and the match is being streamed live by Spórt TG4 (where would we be without them?) on YouTube so, as usual, I’ll embed the live stream here on the blog for ease of viewing. The ticket link for the game is here.

Both counties have named their match day panels for tomorrow evening. Here they are: Mayo, Galway.

We’ll have a Final Whistle pod reviewing the game from Tuam for our Patreon club members tomorrow evening.

On Friday evening the county’s Minor football make their first appearance in this year’s Connacht Championship. They had a bye in last week’s opening round so their campaign gets underway with a Round 2 match against Leitrim.

This game is on at James Stephens Park, Ballina, where throw-in is 5.30pm. The ticket link for it (which is the same as the U20 game) is here. Connacht GAA are streaming the match live (€11.99 – link here).

We may have a Final Whistle pod on Patreon for that one as well but that’s not certain at this point in time.

Right, onto Saturday. Where does one start?

Let’s do so with the county’s hurlers whose NHL Division 3 final meeting with London takes place at Manguard Park, Hawkfield, Kildare (no – I never heard of it either), where throw-in that afternoon is 1.30pm. No ticket details appear to be available for that game at the minute.

The same afternoon the county’s women footballers are in action away to Waterford, a match Liam McHale’s team have to win to have any hope of avoiding relegation from Division One.

This match throws in at a Waterford venue on Saturday at 2.30pm but, as I write, where this will be has yet to be confirmed. There’s no ticket link to share either.

The LGFA’s website does, however, state that the game will be streamed live by – yes, you’ve guessed it – Spórt TG4 on YouTube and, assuming they do, then normal arrangements will also apply about embedding the live stream here on the blog.

The rugby, of course, also takes place on Saturday and I’m heading to Hastings Insurance MacHale Park myself for this novel fixture between Connacht and Munster. (I know, the fixture isn’t all that novel but the venue sure is).

Tickets sold out for this game a long time ago but we’ve got two tickets, courtesy of our super podcast partners EBS, to give away to one of our Patreon club members. The deadline for entering this competition is Thursday at 9pm and everyone who is a club member before then is eligible to enter. More on that here.

On Sunday there are two games involving teams from the county.

The first one is an All-Ireland U20B hurling Championship quarter-final against Tyrone. This Richie McElligott Cup fixture takes place at James Stephens Park where throw-in is 2.15pm. I’ve no ticket link for this one either.

Finally, our Allianz Football League Division One decider against Kerry takes place as part of a double-header at Croke Park that afternoon. The Division Three final between Kildare and Offaly throws in at 1.45pm and then our game, for which the winners will get possession of the newly-dedicated Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh Cup, gets underway at 4pm.

Meath’s David Coldrick was today confirmed as the ref for the Division One final. The match is live on TG4 and the ticket link for it is here.

I notice Mayo gaa had a tweet today saying tickets are now on sale for the sligo game with a 3pm throw in. The connacht council said a few weeks ago that it would be 3.30pm start.

I know it won't put people up or down but some may get caught out on the day

I think that's a Mayo GAA cock-up, Paddyjoejohntom. The GAA website and the Ticketmaster link that Mayo GAA have on their website both say that game throws in at 3.30pm, not 3pm. They'd want to get their story straight, this is fairly basic stuff.

The email issued earlier by secretary had a 3pm throw in time on it, so maybe it's changed. Not that half an hour will make a difference to anyone at this stage a the day with game so far out. Plenty to talk about fixture wise before that one.

WillieJoe. Someone queried it on the tweet that was sent out and Mayo Gaa replied ,confirming it was indeed a 3pm start

It's utter incompetency when two bits of the same organisation are pushing out two different times for a game on the same day. I guess they'll get their story straight at some point ahead of the game!

WJ. Hawkfield is a County board pitch outside Newbridge. It was originally a training ground and there was talk of selling St Conleths park and Kildare making it their home base. My lad was on the Kildare minor panel in 96 and 97 and I used to bring him there for training. It was just called Hawkfield at the time.

Any updates on GAA + and what we could expect from it? Can’t seem to find anything online apart from where it was announced in late February. Did see a tweet that mentioned their press conference, I believe last week, was cancelled but no reasoning given. RTE not showing our match vs Sligo sets up the perfect opportunity for this platform to kick off right. Very strange this hasn’t been sorted.

Pitch in a terrible state last Sunday, will be even worse for the Sligo game after the rugby at the weekend. So much for player welfare!

You’ll remember Hawkfield if you see it once WJ.
Very impressive set up, some of these newer Centres of Excellence are top class. I’ve seen Offaly(faithful fields) Hawkfield and Kerry in recent years.

Erris Exit, I believe that's likely reason for the time change to 3pm, to accommodate a stream. Mayo GAA seem to have updated quicker than HQ.

30 euro for a ticket to Sligo game seems excessive……plus 5 for juveniles

I dunno, 30 plus 5 for juveniles seems very reasonable. Go check what other events charge.

Tony Freeman says:

JP - The Rugby this weekend in the same venue is €20 & €25 (stand).

€30 for the first round of Connaught Championship is excessive and will turn many people off going.
