Game day – untroubled passage the aim in this one

Game day – untroubled passage the aim in this one

Our second outing in this year’s Championship takes place this afternoon. Leitrim provide the opposition in today’s Connacht SFC semi-final at Páirc Seán MacDiarmada, Carrick-on-Shannon, where throw-in is set for 4.30pm. Fermanagh’s Niall Cullen is the ref and GAA+ are streaming the game live, with live radio commentary on Midwest as well.

So far this month the cutthroat, kill-or-be-killed clashes of the National League’s Division One (a competition nobody ultimately wanted to win) have been replaced by the Phoney War opening shots in this year’s Championship. Today’s game between ourselves and Leitrim is set to be very much in this latter vein and is a mis-match that we should win at our ease.

It’s no disrespect to Leitrim to say that we expect to beat them soundly today. We finished top of Division One, they ended bottom of Division Three, losing all six games they played and failing to field a team in the other fixture they were meant to contest. A meeting between teams so far apart in the game’s standing can and, on all available evidence, will produce only one outcome.

So the question then is about how much we’re likely to beat them by and, by extension, what sort of margin would be deemed acceptable from our standpoint.

The last time we played Leitrim – in 2022 – we knocked five goals past them and won by 24 points. That has to be the sort of ballpark you’d expect us to be in today, not least given the greater latitude attackers now have under the new rules.

That margin of victory – which we equalled against them both in 1973 and way back in 1933 – is, in fact, the biggest we’ve ever enjoyed over Leitrim in Championship football. That means we could – and perhaps should – be in record-breaking territory against them today.

Which leads us onto the point about what would be an acceptable result from our point of view.

Ending the Sligo match two weeks ago with just a single score separating the teams wasn’t an outcome that won us many plaudits. But it was at least partly understandable, given the dogged challenge Sligo provided and the fact that we’d contested the Division One decider against Kerry the previous weekend. The Sligo game was also our fourth outing in as many weeks.

This time, with a two-week break and facing one of the weaker teams in the country, no such ready explanations will be at hand should we fail to rack up a big win.

This means that a victory of at least 15/20 points would seem to be the lower bound of what might be deemed acceptable in today’s game. If, by contrast, our winning margin dips into single figures, then I think it’s fair to say that the reaction to this among our own fans will not be pretty.

So, despite the fact that few Mayo supporters will take much satisfaction from it, there’s a grim task awaiting the team today. This is to win by as big a margin as possible, in the process utilising the new rules in a positive fashion with the aim of putting the game to bed as early as possible and then giving minutes to as many fringe players as possible. All without picking up any new injuries.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it?

Leitrim will, of course, have other ideas and, in playing for pride, will do what they can to frustrate us for as long as they’re able. Few envy them their task, as they seek to compete in a contest where the deck is stacked so obviously against them.

Everyone who listened to former Leitrim player Emlyn Mulligan speaking on the pod this week will surely appreciate the tough task facing them today.

The bright hopes of the Andy Moran era have been well and truly extinguished this year. With the bulk of the team that contested last year’s Division Four final not available for selection this year and half of today’s match day panel having never played Championship football at senior inter-county level before, they’re really up against it in this one.

In one sense, it’s arguably logical to hope for our inflicting a beating of such proportions on them that it finally cranks into action some serious debate about the merits of persisting with such lopsided contests. But who really wants to see such an outcome? What sort of sport is that?

So, from our point of view, what we want today is a comfortable win – the more comfortable, the better – and a clean bill of health to send us on our untroubled way towards our first Connacht final appearance in Castlebar in over a decade.

Is that too much to hope for today? Surely not. So let’s get it done. Up Mayo.

I’m hoping that Durkan and Conroy make the bench and get 15/20 minute run out and that we pick up no new injuries. Margin of victory is irrelevant after that. Defeat is simply unthinkable !

E

Getting it done is exactly all that matters. The time for heroics is certainly not now.

T

Tony Freeman says:

No matter how the game goes for Mayo, it feels like a no-win situation. If we win by 20+, people will say it’s just Leitrim. If we win by 5-10 points, they’ll say we struggled against them. The main goal is to get in, get the win, and leave without any injuries.

Safe travels to anyone heading to Carrick!

Acceptable magin of victory talk is non sense .
A goal and a 2 pointer in a few mins is now a 5 point swing either way .
No win game for management.
Win .
Use all subs .
NO injuries..
That would be Acceptable to me .
I'm actually in Carrick now ( stayed last night ) .
Not as cold as yesterday, no rain and brightening up a bit . Should be a decent enough crowd .
Leitrim are a proud footballing county and despite recent results, they will come out and support their team later .

Exile says:

April 19, 2025 at 11:50 am

Don't agree with this being a no win game at all. We're not trying to impress anyone at this stage. Win the game, don't allow them back into it with soft scores, run the Bench if you can (ideally not all in one shot like against Sligo).

T

Tommy+Joe says:

April 19, 2025 at 12:17 pm

I'd be shocked if either of Conroy or Durcan make the squad at this stage. It really would be awful silly to include them as late replacements to a game against the weakest team in Connacht. We've put out dummy squads before but can't see any advantage to this time. It'll surely be one of these occasions where we go with what was said.
No excuses from now on - gap between games is the same for all. I was inclined to give us a bit of leeway for the Sligo game because we had a long run of games. We've had a break, this is weak opposition and we've two weeks to the next game against Galway (who'll have a tougher game than us tomorrow).
Up Mayo.

Seems to be a lot of concern about what people will think if Mayo hammer Leitrim or if its a close game, its a no win situation etc.
That's weak thinking, win the game, use some squad players, move onto the Galway game, sin è.Couldnt give a shite what any other county or the Sunday Game think.

Our season (as has been the case since the draw was made 6 months ago) hinges on the Connacht final on the 4th of May.

T

Tommy+Joe says:

@Gizmobobs - I'll take your word for it but I've been hearing that we'll be seeing him for months now. I can't see either himself or Tommy playing a meaningful part this year, without any game time of any description to get match fit. I hope you're right and I'm wrong!

Don’t have too far to travel to this one today which is nice for a change. While I don’t think anyone is doubting the result against Leitrim this remains an important game for Mayo. It’s our last competitive outing before the Connacht Final and it’s an opportunity for this team to put in a good solid all round performance. A performance that shows us that the team is making genuine progress and winning Connacht is not beyond them. We were poor against Sligo so I’m looking to see a big improvement in Carrick today - that improvement needs to start with our defence which in truth doesn’t scare anyone at the moment.

After 20 minutes of football, to be a point behind Leitrim is something close to a criminal offence. It would be great if someday we could at least act like a team capable of ripping apart a far lesser opponent. What other big county would be struggling like this?

G

G

April 19, 2025 at 5:21 pm

One thing is absolutely crystal clear, Colm Reape is being instructed to go short for kick outs. No doubt in my mind about it. Why else would you do it in a game against Leitrim. It’s far more a management issue than a player issue. Reape as a keeper has one of the biggest boots in the country but he’s being told to play short.

J

James Fleming says:

April 19, 2025 at 5:21 pm

For better kick outs

J

JoeG says:

April 19, 2025 at 5:23 pm

Lazy clueless football so far. No movement, no kickout strategy again, no attacking style,no proper tackling and players thinking they have all the time in the world when in possession. I was watching one player when mayo are building an attack go jogging from halfway up the middle of the pitch into the full forward line, complete a semi circle and jog back wtf is that about? Only bright spot about being in Carrick I won't be listening to any nonsense from Kevin after this. Whatever the final score is it doesn't excuse that 35 mins of shameful non football and the blame lies squarely with management and coaching or lack of both. Totally pissed off with this crap game after game.

Very, very flat. Conditions are poor but the handling, the constantly passing back and across instead of looking up. Kickouts short are a waste of energy. 13 for Leitrim is a baller. Need quick ball and better handling for the second half. Fair play to Leitrim but its a hard watch today.

Moose79 says:

This is the last time Mayo will be favourites to win a game this year. Galway will beat Roscommon by 7/8 points and will be odds on to beat us. They are in the top three favourites to win the All Ireland so let them be favourites it's grand.
I wouldn't go over analysing today, no point. We know our 20 players now and we know we aren't in the top 5 teams on the Country so to pick off one of the favourites at some stage would be a bonus.

The constant checking back when we win the ball in the scoring zone is exhausting. No goal chances was very telling as @Km79 already pointed out. Not sure what to make of it but we looked so 1 dimensional. I'm hoping Leitrim are better than we gave them credit for and wish them all the best in the Tailteann. Some serious ballers going on that game alone. Ball handling for the entire match was sloppy, but the ref gave absolutely nothing to Mayo, how many frees were awarded for just tackling. Hession's one with 5 to go was a joke. Need a beer after suffering this.

O

Ontheditch says:

April 19, 2025 at 6:14 pm

We are locked into old rules football, slow build up, allowed Leitrem time to set up defensively. Fair play to them, did we create one goal chance and 3-0 to Leitrem in 2 pointers. A clueless performance, poor AOS. If Mayo play like that in Connacht final, they will spoil the game.

M

Michael131 says:

April 19, 2025 at 6:14 pm

Fair play to Leitrim for sticking in it and giving their best performance of the season so far. From a Mayo point of view... I honestly am lost for words. More questions than answers and yes you could say "It's only Leitrim", but it IS only Leitrim. Regardless of the scoreline, our performance overall was well below the standards of what we are capable of. Poor hand passing, running into traffic and passing side to side. And when you consider that it is our most strongest starting 15... that's all that can be said.

Look, they can do better. We know they can. But there needs to be a massive improvement for this Connacht final.

New Rules or no new rules, maybe this Mayo team are trying to perfect the art of a slow build up, it's simple if one team has and holds the ball then the other team will not create a scoring chance.
I as with many others like to kick passes more into space for the forwards, but if this doesn't wor you may be caught out on the counter attack, ie this probably to cover up for a weak defence.

I can understand this policy against the 4 All Ireland contenders but not the weaker Counties.

@Km79, why do you think we had no goal chances? Anything to do with the ultra defensive Leitrim set-up? They had two banks of 4 set up across their 21 and at the top of the old D as soon as Mayo gained possession. They clearly went out to avoid goals at all costs.

It's clear that some teams are eschewing two pointers for the vast majority of attacks (Kerry, Tyrone, Dongeal), we might be doing the same.

E

Part of the problem looked to be that we couldn't/ wouldn't kick the ball from the HB line until DOC came on. That the fact there was no threat of two pointers when they'd funnelled back.

J

JoeG says:

April 19, 2025 at 6:35 pm

Conditions were bad but they were at least as bad last night in Tuam and the U17s made light of it and both sides put on an attacking feast and showed how football could and should be played.
Apart from the continuing problems that we don't seem to be addressing I'm baffled in why when defending we don't get close and give forwards all the time they need to shoot.
Now it's time to leave the comfort of the pub and head home.

Didn't look like a team who were well up for it. Treating the Connacht Championship like the league with all the blooding of new and not so no new players. Did not expect to see Akram making his championship debut 7 years after his last appearance for Mayo. But as Boyler said on the podcast they won't be taking much out of the game. Just get the job done and move on to the Connacht Final. Obviously the training load is set for the start of May when the real action starts. It was like the Sligo game. A sluggish performance against a plucky team but no real jeopardy in the end. Credit to Leitrim however, they laid down a marker early on and took AOS out of the game.

Can't read anything in to these games, if we don't turn up in Connaught final then it time to call it off and look to next year, I think we will see a different Mayo in final we had a competitive league, no reason to think that's going to change, blowing teams out of the water now is a pointless exercise

Personally I’ve never been this disheartened after a WIN. How on earth can our manager be promoting this style of play? I’m singling out Kevin because at this stage in his management career he should be showing far more authority than he currently is. He’s like a statue on the sideline and lets Rochford run the show. And it’s a horrible show to watch. I personally think we will play better in the final and maybe sneak a win. But we aren’t a serious threat for an All Ireland.

This managements legacy has been on of regression. We were in a poor spot the last time Rochford left too. Knocked out to Kildare. I’d be deeply concerned if Rochford is involved with any other mayo team in the future.

Jesus lads that's flat as pancake and taken all wind out of sales ... we're killing lads by having them out of position and rewarding the steady Eddie's who aren't good enough.
Knock off the schakles and go for it, pace power tenacity and let it compensate for our fake forwards.
Matty can't play midfield give him a role at 11 or nothing .
Carney and flynn are fine midfield.
Halfbacks need to win a breaking ball for first time in 4 matches.
It's fixable very fixable to make us competitive but we're sleep walking into draining the life out of everyone and back to the days that players won't enjoy pkaying for us

We got out with a win and probably no injuries. After that it's move to the next game. Sure, it was a poor game in bad conditions but that's nothing new when mayo play lower division teams. In old money it would be 20pts to 9pts which would look like a comprehensive win. I wouldn't read much into no 2 pointer and as regards goal chances there wasn't much room with all the defenders back. I was surprised tho to see akram get game time seeing as he didn't get a minute during the league. Seemed like a strange time to be thrown into the fray. Anyway we'll move on and see what happens. Btw kerry aren't afraid to use the quick ball in so far.

Our U20s play lovely winning football as do our U17s and so do most of the top senior teams which begs the question wtf can't Mayo seniors play decent football?
Not going to name any players but we have several in there that do nothing but look for a lateral hand pass. Those days are gone and we are probably the only "big" team that refuses to accept that with the new rules it's a totally different game. I believe that some of our present team will never adapt and unfortunately need to be replaced by players that will. However this will not happen until a new forward looking management is in place. I'm sadly writing off this season unless Kevin McStay and co are playing the greatest game of poker ever.

N

No doubt says:

April 19, 2025 at 7:40 pm

This midfield rule regarding players moving away after a fetch is total nonsense. What's happening is the player who fields the ball just runs into the nearest player to him and it's a tapover score. Has to be changed.

G

Gizmobobs says:

No doubt, that's what I was referring to the other day in the Knockmore v Parke game, Parke got 8pts from it.l I think, 2pts were genuine blocking rest fielder targeted the man from what seemed. It's what coaches should coach as well as some have intimated already are doing.

Y

Young Fella says:

April 19, 2025 at 7:47 pm

I would love to be optimistic about the Connacht Final, but I fear what could happen to us. We seem to be totally unwilling to kick the ball in to the forward line even when there’s space in there. Plus we’re in bother on kickouts, I’m my opinion it wasn’t hard to see Leitrim had one option… long down the middle. Dylan Thornton did ok but when it was that obvious why didn’t we flood the area? Watching David McBrien picking up a left half forward position several times on Leitrim restarts in the 2nd half, as the ball sailed over his head, was so frustrating.

Maybe McStay is keeping his powder dry for the final… maybe he has a master plan… maybe…

But we’re there now so we’ve no option but to go for it this time, however that turns out. But I’m worried.

Finally, and this is nothing to do with how poor Mayo played, something has to be done about the inept standard of referees and linesmen. Once I saw that Cullen, Kelly and Nolan were on duty it was clear that 3 villages were missing their idiots this afternoon. I didn’t realise there were different rules in place for giving frees to lower division teams.

Job done and into the Connacht Final but apart from that it’s very hard to take any positives from the game today. Ryan the only noticeable difference in quality between the two teams. Our forward play is very poor - for years we couldn’t break down a blanket defence and now we struggle badly when a team defends the arc.
I was hoping to see an improvement in our defence today but that didn’t happen and we gave the Leitrim forwards loads of time and space.
Who knows maybe it’s all part of the masterplan and we are hiding our light under a bushel until the Connacht Final but I doubt it very much!

Hopefully the criticism from that horrible performance will be ringing in the players' ears for not only the next 2 weeks but the rest of the season. If taken in the right way it can spur us on because that performance was unacceptable and thats no disrespect to Leitrim at all who gave everything. However I don't trust this management team because anyone who sends a team out to play that erratically from game to game lacks a coherent plan which every serious team needs. We have no discernable style of play - it seems we're making it up as we go along and I'm astonished at this level we have managed to avoid a proper tanking at the hands of a decent team. That is a tribute to the players. They wouldn't accept this kind of thing in Kerry or Dublin and neither should we. We have to have our standards. Maybe this is an elaborate "rope a dope" and Mayo aren't showing their hand but I'm not convinced. We'll know in two weeks time.

B

Bonni Boyler says:

April 19, 2025 at 8:06 pm

Penalising the lad going up for the ball on a kickout is all sorts of wrong. The couple of rules including scraping the 2 pointer need to be sorted. 50m is way too draconian. Ref was very very poor but so was our handling.

M

Moyside says:

April 19, 2025 at 8:26 pm

Bottom line right now this evening is that our championship is only beginning on May 4th...with the greatest respect to both sligo n Leitrim. The only performance we should judge this team on is in 2 weeks against either galway or ros. Win the connought final and put in a strong, front footed football display thereafter in the championship would be a productive season. Lads n lassies, it's only starting now. The players n management know fine well performances to date are not good enough. All we can do as supporters is turn up in 2 weeks and demand the performance good enough to win the final and support our team to the hilt.

After watching a proper game of Gaelic football between Kerry and Cork, it would really make you question where our S&C is at too. The strength and size of the Kerry and Cork players would make our lads look like school kids. Other than O’Shea and McBrien, the rest of our lads aren’t strong enough. ROD is fine too as he’s smaller but with a low centre of gravity and is fearless .

Plenty of strong opinions here and rightly so. I think we’re not adapting fast enough to the new era. The modern game demands quick thinking, fast ball movement, and forwards getting ball early and in space. We’re still stuck in a lateral mindset, even when we have targets like Aido inside. It’s frustrating to watch.

Credit to Leitrim—they deserved their praise and made it tough—but the conditions and the ref don’t excuse a lack of tempo or imagination.

I still believe there’s more in this team. But it’s time to see it. Time to trust the players with faster football and back our attacking strengths. A Connacht final is no place for safety-first football.
