Game day – this would be a great one to win

Game day – this would be a great one to win

We’re off to the home of the All-Ireland champions this evening. Our Allianz League Round 4 clash with Armagh throws in at 5pm, with Dublin’s Barry Tiernan reffing it. It’s live on TG4 and there’s also live radio commentary on Midwest.

The county’s women footballers also take on Armagh at the same venue. That game is on after the men, with throw-in at 7.30pm. TG4 are also showing it live.

Last weekend’s stumbling win over Tyrone was anything but convincing. But it was a win and that gives us something to work with this evening. Win this one and we’re starting to get into a bit of a rhythm.

Nothing could have prepared us for how poor Tyrone were last Sunday. They lacked purpose, they lacked all ambition, we always looked like we had it in us to beat them. But, boy, did we make a meal out of doing so.

So the first point to say about this evening’s match is that a performance anything like last Sunday’s won’t be good enough to get a result in this one.

Armagh are the defending All-Ireland champions and so the already tough task of getting a win on their home turf will be all the more difficult in light of their recent stellar achievements.

For all our near-misses with glory over the last decade and more we can still but dream about what it’s like to reach the Promised Land. This evening we take on a team that did just that last July.

They’ve had their problems since then, however, and this, combined with their less than ideal start to this year’s Division One campaign, offers us the opportunity of turning them over in this game. All the more so in light of the fact that we won last Sunday whereas they lost by eight points.

Billy Joe was full of useful insights on the pod during the week but one of his most telling points was where he said that, if we’re to profit tonight, we have to take them on using the new rules to the full. In order words, we need to play without the sense of rigid fear that seems to have become the hallmark of the Mayo team under its current management.

It would mark a major turning point if we were to adapt a more expansive style, one aimed at exploiting the opportunities presented by the new rules. Is it realistic to expect us to do this?

There’s little evidence, to be honest, that this is something we’re contemplating. As has been said on the pod repeatedly since this League campaign got underway, Mayo appear to be still wedded to the old 2024 playbook, despite the fact that, to all intents and purposes, the game being played now is a completely new one.

But, then again, maybe the Tyrone game provides a hint about how we plan to exploit the new rules. You could argue that we played a clever game the last day, keeping it tight until the final quarter and then, with added strength from the bench, striking for home with decisive effect.

There may possibly be something to this. We bagged five of the final six points scored last Sunday and, coming down the stretch, we were the team driving for victory, shooting the final two points of the day. Finishing the stronger isn’t something we’re particularly know for so it was good to see us come out on top in that way against Tyrone.

With Jordan Flynn and Aidan O’Shea back in harness, there’s definitely more heft to our line-up. The team we’ve selected for this evening (with the usual caveat about possible late changes) seems to have a better balance to it, though this proposition is sure to be tested at the Athletic Grounds.

The bottom line, I guess, is that this would be a great one to win. To come away from the home of the All-Ireland champions with what would be a second win of this League campaign would go a long way towards preserving our top tier survival. More importantly, it would give the team a welcome confidence boost and it would help to lift the gloom amongst supporters too.

Here’s hoping they do it and good luck to the ladies as well, in what’s another tough challenge for them as well. Hoping for two wins is probably pushing it but you’ve got to hope, don’t you?

Right, time to get myself organised for the trip. Back later with reports on both of this evening’s games and we’ll have a Final Whistle pod as well.

Let’s get this done. Up Mayo.

A good read there WJ and fair synopsis. I believe we will win this one with a few points to spare for 2 main reasons the strength of the starting line up should allow us to be more direct than we have been to a degree at least plus we will have a couple of potential scorers off the bench when things heat up. I don't see Armagh scoring heavily enough to win. Mayo to win by 5 !

Don't care if we win.
It's how we play that's all important. Don't expect full out attacking, more a little positivity and something we can be more hopeful and optimistic about.

Best of luck to St.Colmans. Best chance of a Mayo side getting to the Hogan Cup final since Rice College pre covid, and definite best chance of any of the 3 Colman's teams to win Connacht in last 8 years.
Mullingar won't be easy of course but with mercy mounthawk and maghera on the other side of the draw, you have to be bouncing into that game.

Would be great to win today but while I'm actually going ( shortly I hope ) , I'm not expecting us to beat the All Ireland champs on their home patch .
Hoping for quicker ball to inside forwards and more physicality especially against these lads .
Improved performance and our new faces to hold their own Would be a step in the right direction towards championship

Armagh hold their one point loss, a couple of years back in qualifiers in Castlebar as their turning point, that they going the right way. Let's go, and play with a bit of abandonment, and see we're it takes us. That still might be a loss, but let entertain Mayo crowd that travelled to Armagh.

I think one positive from last week's game was Eoghan McLaughlin's penetrative runs through the Tyrone defence, but one thing I would like to see is a player running off his shoulder as an option for him to pass it to to finish it off, someone like Tommy Conroy would be ideal, but just get someone in there running off his shoulder please!

Colmans game was very poor standard of football. I suppose its an ideal way to win a semi final.
Will have to improve by at least 30-40% to have any chance n final.

C

@TheDarkyFinn

Good to see Carney back.

Heard McStay saying after Tyrone that Durcan is due back anyday now.. Not sure on DOC or Conroy hopefully not to long!

T

The bruiser says:

February 22, 2025 at 2:40 pm

Was a very poor Hogan semi final but Colman's will not care. The big names beirne, Tracy, Mortimer, Cassidy were all below normal performance so more to give in final. It was one of those games where the other players all stood up. Gill, noonan and Flanagan all very good in defense. Kelly and Tierney good around the middle

Not often a mayo team get to a Hogan cup final. Rice college a few years ago is all I remember.

Hi All,

Just to say I am hopeful for today too, maybe because the 5pm( TV) start suits me so well for a Sat. Have been to the Armagh Grounds. Also the selected full forward line gives the impression me there is something afoot. Then Rian O 'Neill is not available.
Hope all you brave souls travelling have an enjoyable trip and at least a draw.

Ciaran 2.

W

Willie Joe says:

February 22, 2025 at 3:31 pm

Wind could be a major factor by the looks of it. There’s a stiff breeze blowing straight down the field into the town end goal. That’s definitely the scoring end this evening, two-pointers likely to be the winning and losing of this game.

M

Mayomessi says:

February 22, 2025 at 3:34 pm

Was impressed with Eastern Gaels Dara Flanagan, a county U17 panelist last year and still U17 this year. is Ronan Kelly Fenton’s brother, Darragh Beirne has filled out but has it impacted his speed.

Cian McHale is paying for this management team ineptitude. A corner forward is only as good as the balls that being played into him, a non factor the last day and any day under Rochford. It pretty poor way of changing tactics is by taking off. a player who you aren’t using and playing the same way with a gale force wind in the second half.
I hope we change the way we play tonight. A bit more adventurous. Like to see Carney and Thornton starting.

How the sweet fuck can we still be breaking the 3v3? At club level it wouldn’t be acceptable. 5 times already this year. I’d say that’s more than the rest of the league put together. That alone is completely fucking unacceptable from management.

As for the performance, not much to talk about. Full back line badly exposed. Very badly exposed and this is without Rian Oneill. Get O’Shea and and just hope.

Btw I feel the taking off of Conor Reid a bit harsh. Mcstay must have it in for Moy Davitts lads. Has no problem denting their confidence anyway.

J

It’s very early in the year but we have to reflect that this is year THREE of this management team. I can accept getting beat by a better team on the day but certain things should be taken for granted like fight, tactical know how and basic execution of the skills of the game. We have absolutely none of those. Players look disinterested and demoralised. Can anyone say we have any sort of game plan? It’s like a copy and paste of what we’ve seen before. It’s a shambles.

G

GlasagusDearg. says:

February 22, 2025 at 5:45 pm

Woeful, just woeful. 5 points in 35 minutes of football is just shocking. All the usual old failings on display, bad wides, poor kick-outs, goal chances butchered, great opening lost with dreadful Towey pass. Every time Armagh attack, you expect them to score-the opposite with Mayo. Painful watch and unless an early improvement in second half, think I'll switch over to the England v. Scotland rugby.

That was as bad a half as seen in a while. I thought we started to turn a corner last week but one step forward two steps back

I don't understand what's going wrong. We don't have quality of a team we had a few years ago but we also don't have ideas. Even with best players in the country of you don't have a plan you are going no where

Not sure what I want to see at half time. Towey very poor but if taken off again that's his confidence gone but if he stays on and plays as bad that doesn't help him. When Flynn released him at edge of large arc and he squared the ball to Armagh defender I knew it wasn't going to be his day

Ruane got a nice score early on but missed try after

The difference in two teams kick outs

The goal. Armagh didn't give up and let ball over line but we should not be conceding that easy

Note the comment re jersey colour but I'm struggling with Ethan Rafferty jersey similar to his teammates

Last kick of half. Side line ball. It was more than 40m out. Why doesn't the arc extend to endline as it's measured from centre of goals.

G

Green&Red says:

February 22, 2025 at 5:47 pm

I know we've spent years trying to work the ball into the extract right spot for the kick but we need to get beyond that sharpish or we'll be left behind. Well now the benchmark has been laid down. If we go back playing shite over and back football then it’s a disgrace. Look what we can do when we kick and move the ball at speed. God Armagh are a very very odd team. Any previous All Ireland champions who are up by 8 points at HT don’t let the opposition back into it.

Now that's more like it.
Off the cuff and driving is only way we can succeed.
We need to free Matty to 11 the impact of Mcbrien at 6 was immense and full credit to Mchugh has that 3 shirt now.
Neary Ruane and Flynn as halfforwards is a proper good line. Coen is better suited to midfield and let him and Reid battle out to play alongside Carney.
Delighted for Jack thay was a proper good free performance from him.
We need big athletes and time to move on from the smaller lads who are all shapes and very little end product.
Full credit to Aido for his return but ROD definitely played himself back into form the hard way.

That second half was bloody fantastic, Neary's goal was class, smart and composed, but what I liked most was Coen's 2 pointer, I didn't think he had this in his locker. Whether it's true or not we need teams to believe we have multiple shooters who are accurate at the 2 point rangez so they push out and create space behind.

That goal from young Davitt...nest individual goal since JC in limerick, had to be brave in flicking it onto his own path as he could have had his head severed, and the finish was sublime.
Matty mixed the good with the middling and Cold should have advanced another couple of meters and punched over but that should bring our confidence on a bit more.

I must have a rant at half-time in every game. Took off the shackles second half, went more direct and attacked with pace and purpose, which suits Mayo rather than that slow possession based shite-management take note. Showed real character and spirit. OTHER POSITIVES-Ryan looking more like his old self, Neary a real find, McHugh settling in at full-back and Carney back-hope to see him push on this year. Bit disappointed we did'nt win-silly mistake by Boland and Reape had that chance at the death. On to Kerry next weekend and hope we keep the second half momentum going.

Would not agree that the players decided to play differently, there was a strong breeze which favored us in the second half. We wanted to hold possession in the first half.

I think that this will give us confidence, great to see Carney back, ROD stepped up, Coen did well, i think that he is a leader and stepped up in the second half. Getting better on the breaks, McHugh settling into full back. Lots more to do but some light in the tunnel!!

Hopefully management have now seen the light and eventually realise what most posters on here have been saying to stop the ponderous build up. So hopefully that's the end of Donegal's Rochford Ball

The black card for Armagh swung the game in Mayo's favour but ye were coming into it before that but Grimley didnt do Armagh any favours yet again. It was a very good goal and ye were very unlucky in 1st half not to get another. I dont like the goalie up the pitch I really hope they change the rules so goalie must stay in his area. A draw is probably a fair result given how Mayo played so poorly in the 1st half. I thought Ryan O Donoghue did very well in the second half after a poor first half. He seemed to be getting some Armagh treatment as well but unnoticed by the referee. In my view there were a number of occasions where Mayo worked space in the two point zone but recycled the ball instead of having a go like Coen did. Its something for McStay to ponder as if Mayo were taking another 2-3 two pointers in that space it would put a different gloss on things. Aidan O Shea has a great eye for a pass and appeared to be harshly treated by the ref on two occasions. Its been an interesting league so far with lots of second half comebacks. As for Galway I expect Donegal will go all out to beat us tomorrow but the weather and the breeze in Salthill will more than likely spoil the match. If we could get a point we would probably be safe but points are hard won in this tough top division.

2

2 hops says:

February 22, 2025 at 7:41 pm

Something that didn't seem very important at the time but that ball from distance that Colm got a hand to over the crossbar, turning it from a 2 pointer to a single did turn out to make a difference ultimately....makes up for the missed one I guess .

A ''bolter'' is a rarity nowadays but if Davitt Neary can keep that level of consistency going he could be a real asset come championship. Having said that I think we will need to use him more sparingly in our last couple of league games ,so as to keep him fresh.

Hi all it’s a while since I stuck my head over the ditch. Firstly happy new year to all and best wishes for the football year ahead and safe journey to you all as ye support Mayo.
That was a great comeback this evening and ye were unlucky not to steal the two points but I’m sure you are all glad of the draw and no doubt ye would have taken the hand off at half time for that result.
For me ye were a little fortunate as Armagh definitely took their eye off the ball after getting such a big lead at half time. Saying that Mayo seemed to shoot the Shepard’s collie and do what they do best and just go for it, unfettered of caution, outdated defensive play trying to hold onto the ball and fear of error and the Curley finger. It was a breath of fresh air to see them playing brave and confident attacking football as when Mayo tear the shirt off they are as good as what’s out there. Would have loved to see ye winning as with four points ye would be very close to being safe.
Next weekend I expect a belter in McHale park as both teams are in a tight enough spot in regard to league points. Tonight’s result result should be very positive for mayo and last weeks calamity should also sharpen focus in the training ground in Kerry. Tomorrow the weather looks bad for the game so Tyrone should scrape it with home advantage in poor weather, I expect a few of their big guns to be on the field as well so that will be a different prospect.
On a separate point I was surprised that the ladies game wasn’t on before the men’s game. It would have been a very good thing for those players to enjoy at least the second half with a full crowd. People with a long journey back to the west would for the most part leave after the first game. I think it was an opportunity lost for the promotion of the game with all the young girls at the game it would have lovely for them to see the best players from both Mayo and Armagh.

Things improved second half !
We should really have won it
I hope the keeper rule changes to restrict them to their own half cos it’s absolutely killing us
We actually managed the time left at the end but unfortunately the kickable chance fell to Reape.
Ryan o Donoghue was outstanding second half
I really like Eoin corner back too . Tenacious.
Constantly playing a player who can’t do the basics like solo the ball properly is really annoying me though. No other serious footballing county does it.
Great leadership from Coen too with a monster score to kick start the comeback

Aido had a huge impact when we decided to use him 15 minutes after he came on
They couldn’t handle him

I have to say it is a great venue. Atmosphere was excellent second half .

M

Mayonaze says:

February 22, 2025 at 8:03 pm

St least we showed some fight in 2nd half but I’d agree Armagh’s complacency (they hammered us in the 1st half) coupled with the black card really impacted the 2nd half. Credit to the players though. They had a go and the evidence is there now, not that as needed, that a fast blitz attack is far more effective the only way to play. I fear however that we’ll see the lateral stuff again before too long. That’s management’s strategy. The only reason we saw the fast attacking 2nd half is cos we had no choice being 8 down.

Boland’s error was really poor. Reapes miss was equally poor. That game was there to be won and we didn’t close it out.

Claire, I don’t deny Mayo played like warriors in the second half and ye could have won it. I don’t know which Armagh player was about to pull the trigger and he had his arm strongly pulled denying an almost certain point from which mayo went down the field and scored a point. I’m not complaining as I love to see Mayo doing well and every game will have a poor decision or two. The point I’m trying to make is if it was a two point game at half time I think Mayo would have played with too much caution and Armagh would probably have won the game, just an opinion and not a slight on a fantastic comeback..

Coming into the league I, and I think most fans wanted us to find a few players and see a style of play that you could enjoy and give us a chance.

So far on the players, Neary has been absolutely superb. Morahan is settling in nicely too. Others such as Reid and Irwin are getting game time and I think will be decent bench options come championship time. I’d like to see Thornton get some game time at midfield to see what he can offer. Cian McHale, Prendergast and a few others would really have benefitted had the FBD happened, but their chances are now fairly limited.

On the style of play, I think it is very much one of trying to mix the slow possession stuff with occasionally breaking out into something a little faster but the management team I guess consider that is only sustainable for half a game.

The black card definitely played a role in the comeback, but I still liked what we saw tonight a lot more than what we saw last weekend, and we actually won that game. The style of play last weekend was so negative that it nearly felt like a loss, it was so hard to feel excited about it. At least tonight we saw a bit of spark and initiative. I still think we'll see see a return of that awful conservative rubbish before too long, but tonight is a glimpse of what can happen if we have a go. As lots of people have said on here, I don't mind a draw or even a loss if it looks like we're trying something and it looked and felt like a bit of improvement in the second half tonight.

And as I said above, I liked how Ryan sounded in the post-match interview. For all the people who think there is trouble in the camp, it didn't sound or look that way from him after the game - he spoke well and was measured.

E

Exile says:

February 22, 2025 at 8:42 pm

In the context of where we were at half time I get being happy with a point, but in the context of the whole match it's a massive let down. That's all around closing out a match, rather than getting too excited about the league.

The goal conceded in the first half was shite. Getting cleaned out on kick outs obviously savage, but that got much better after Reid was taken off (not saying it was all his fault). It does look like there's more of a tactic this year to try and break the ball at kickouts, which worked better against Tyrone who are smaller and undermanned. If that gets better over the rest of the league it would be a big plus.

We should have never been in such a bad position position at half time, and could and should have won the second half more convincingly.

Far easier in the eye in the second half which gives us all hope, but not closing out a game that was on a plate for us in the last 10 minutes is something I'd hope the team will be very frustrated about.

@Nephin: Fairly common in management.

Spend whatever time is needed to get across specific messages (less is more in that type of thing), fix any tactical issues or problems with matchups, and then throw them whatever motivation can be squeezed in. For the last bit, if you've strong leaders in a side, great to have that part player led rather than management led and just get out of their way.

You'll often hear the Dublin lads talk about video sessions under Gavin (different, but comparable enough). In the early years they all hated them and felt it a chore. By the end, he'd ask a single question and the players themselves would run with it from there. No harder judges or stronger champions for what lads are doing out there than from the fella on their shoulder having to pick up the slack or benefit from the positives.
