Game day – go for it

Game day – go for it

We didn’t get a day out at all at Croke Park last year. This afternoon, though, we’re appearing for the second time this year at GAA HQ and this time there’s a national title – and, with it, some sparkling new silverware – on the line.

Kerry provide the opposition in today’s Allianz Football League Division One final. The game throws in at 4pm today, preceded by the Division Three decider between Kildare and Offaly at 1.45pm. Both matches are live on TG4 and both are win-on-the-day contests. Meath’s David Coldrick refs our one.

Long before we ever reached today’s final there was plenty of talk about our not wanting to be here. With our Championship opener against Sligo just a week away, it’s far from ideal. But, now that we’re in it, you’d have to conclude that it’s far from a disaster too.

Our opponents face no such predicament. While we’ll leave Croke Park today with next Sunday’s Connacht Championship meeting with the Yeats County to the forefront of our minds, they’ll be checking that they’ve got their passports, as they’re off to Portugal for some warm weather training. They don’t appear in the Championship for another three weeks.

This kind of scheduling is, as we all know, completely crazy. It goes deeper than how matches are fixed, of course, as it also relates to all of the problems stemming from the continued existence of the provincial Championships. We’re in a highly competitive one, Kerry are in a moribund one which they know 100% they’re going to win.

But none of the above counts as news. It’s relevant, of course, but not when the ball is thrown in at Croke Park this afternoon.

When this happens we can have every expectation that both sides are going to go at this full tilt. There’s a national title on the line – one they’ve won 23 times and we’ve won on 13 occasions – and it’s one we’ll both want to win.

Comparisons may be made with 2022, the last time we contested a Division One final against Kerry. We really didn’t want to be there that day (and, thankfully, I wasn’t able to be there, as I’d tested positive for Covid a few days before so had to watch it on TV in splendid isolation at home) and Kerry skated to an extremely easy victory over us.

Rather than disinterest in a League title, though, the main reason why we took such a tanking that day was because we were in the midst of a truly horrendous injury crisis. That forced us to take the field at Croke Park without at least a third of what we’d have then regarded as our first team. Any county would struggle in such circumstances and struggle badly we did.

On those other occasions in recent years where we’ve appeared in League finals – in 2019 and 2023 – we showed we had no issue with being there. None at all, in fact – we won both of them.

You know where I’m going with this.

We head into today’s decider in rude enough health on the fitness front. Sure, we’ve gone the whole League campaign without Paddy Durcan and Tommy Conroy, with Diarmuid O’Connor having made only a few fleeting appearances as well. Aside from that, though, we’ve gone through the spring relatively (though not wholly) unscathed.

As a result, the team we’ll be sending out to battle this afternoon is a fairly settled one. Whether or not that’s a good idea in terms of the many challenges coming down the line at us in short order over the coming weeks is another matter but does it mean we’re better equipped to win the match we want to prevail in today? You’d have to think it does.

And then we come to the run of matches we’ve had. Following the two opening round losses, this is a team that has, somehow, got the knack of coming out on top in tight contests. We could so easily have lost every one of those five games but we ended up winning four of them and we should really have won up in Armagh too.

When we had Peter Canavan on the podcast a few weeks back, he noted approvingly about Mayo’s refusal to lose in both the Tyrone and Armagh matches. Since then we’ve shown the same penchant against Kerry, Derry and Donegal. Can we do so again today, with silverware now at stake?

We all know Kerry’s qualities. Their attack is, pound-for-pound, the best in the business at the present time. The additional space the new rules offer them makes their attack all the more potent.

But we know where Kerry aren’t as strong too. Their midfield isn’t hectic and their backline can be got at, as we showed so clearly when we ran hard at them in Castlebar at the start of the month.

This all points to a high-scoring League final at HQ today. They’ve been knocking up far bigger scores than us this spring so that alone makes them deserving favourites to lift the Corn Mhícil Uí Mhuircheartaigh later this afternoon.

That suits us fine. Kerry were ridiculously short odds to beat us as well a month ago.

We all know how that one finished. A similar outcome today would fit the bill nicely. That fact that it would bestow on us another League title is even better.

But, then again, we are the League Specialists. So let’s get special at Croke Park today and capture this national title for the third time in seven years. Let’s get it done. Up Mayo.

It will be interesting to see what management have learned from last week and the problem down the right channel through which Donegal could have had 5 or 6 goals. If that's not fixed it could be 2022 all over again Also can we improve at Midfield we need to dominate there to starve the superior kerry forwards. Kickouts al a problem for us but also for a lot of teams. Probably more in hope than expectation...Mhaigh Eo a bu..

Great build-up for the final today, Willie Joe. Thanks.
Best of luck to everyone later on this afternoon. A good solid performance and no injuries would be fine.
The tanking we got in HQ three years ago really did put the cosh on any optimism the team might have had for the championship ahead back then.
It would be extra special though to get our hands on the new "corn" given the Kerry connection.

Kickouts and the midfield battle will be the key component today:
Lose and it could be a long day
Win midfield and their back line can definitely be got at

The big thing with Mayo is energy, if we can bring that energy, intensity and chaos we can trouble them.

Would expect Fenton Kelly to start and pick up Gavin White. Hession on the Paidi should be a great battle. Croke park and the new rules definitely suit the forward players unfortunately.

There is an element of the unknown here, as you highlight WJ, we have won tight games this year, and winning the midfield battle will be key. The unknown is whether we can step up again as Kerry will be gung-ho to win this. We will know alot more about our championship chances this evening but I think that Mayo will surprise many today with their performance.

O

Have to agree with Lahanman. We nèed a fix for our left hand side and get a return from kickouts/breaking ball. Dress rehearsal for championship and great to get the outing in Croke Park

Donegal have been doing that to most teams lads. They're seriously fit and organised. Let's just focus on this one today. Keeping Clifford quiet is a tough task but essential.

M

March 30, 2025 at 12:04 pm

It will all depend on our defense containing Kerry attack. The evidence last week would suggest we will not be able to. But if we have learned some lessons we might just do it. Good luck to the lads.

M

Moose79 says:

March 30, 2025 at 12:04 pm

Given the circumstances, it is hard to see past a comfortable kerry win and that's okay. We had to win last week and we did....just
I think if you were ro ask the squad where they would prefer to be today, I'd imagine a week off would be the honest answer.
All this 'winning is a habit' stuff is grand yes but in the circumstances, its not the be all.
Obviously I don't want a bad loss today as the usual stuff will be thrown at us (I see brolly has already started) but the loudest of criticisms usually come from our neighbours and let's be honest they aren't exactly showing us how it's done in finals....
Let people big kerry, Donegal and Galway up and write us off... so what...
We are slowly improving, have found a few fellas since last year and have a few good performances at underage. The year is long and today will be forgotten about either way by Wednesday.

Unfortunately will have to watch this one in Torremolinas as holiday booked when it looked very unlikely we would make it to the final! Found an Irish pub showing it. One we ca win and should forget about Sligo for today. Let's not make it easy for Kerry especially as they will consider the new cup theirs. Up Mayo.

Anything that's not won clean from kickouts today (either side)we need to be under it before it hits the grass. That gets the roar from supporters, gives a team huge energy and deflates the opposition. Have we the personell in that area to read the breaks and react quickest? Well we'll see, but I think that's the platform we need if we're to push on.
We need to play a bit different today I think, with a half eye on Sligo, that means less running from deep, more quick early ball. Not a time to be flogging ourselves.

Best of luck to all today. A really difficult assignment against a Kerry team who gave last year’s AI winners and runners up a good tanking in their last 2 matches. Would be great to win but I think that is unlikely. In the event that we don’t win I just hope we play well and pick up no injuries. We are so reliant on a small few players for scores and it’s imperative that we keep those lads fit for the big tests ahead. Maigh Eo Abu

As a neutral I think ye will ship a similar beating to us last night. 8 or 9 points id say. Mayo focus should be solely on Sligo next week, you cannot take them for granted. Mayo support in Castlebar is the greatest asset to an under dog team. If ye ye are tired or leggy, the groans from the crowd are like oxygen. Like it was for us in 2023. Staying injury free and keeping a bit of juice in the tank is the order of the day. Don’t lose the heads on here if ye get a trimming. League winners are forgotten at 12.01am tonight.

Kerry seem content enough to let us play the ball around their 50, as we seem to lack the guile to create goal chances. Hard to see us getting back into this without at least one major.

We don’t seem to have anyone who could keep David Clifford quiet, alas.

Reape’s head seems to have gone, that moment of madness with Clifford could have been much costlier.

Mayo doing OK but passing the ball back to Kerry on 3 occasions is very hard to watch & short kick out to a player standing waiting for the ball to come to him is criminal, dispossessed & Kerry get soft goal, my god they make life hard for themselves, out from that they are playing well, big improvement needed second half.

Y

Young Fella says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:48 pm

Kick outs are key. Mayo struggling on their own kick outs which is giving Kerry the impetus. Pauric Clifford’s influence is light years ahead of what it was in Castlebar.

T

The west is best says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:48 pm

As poor an all as Reid was playing, he wasn't alone. Giving a young lad the curly finger 2 minutes before halftime will hardly be great for any young lads confidence. There are more senior players out there that were playing no better.

Mayo might have more coaches than the Kansas City Chiefs, but they still haven't taught the players how to kick pass a football.

G

GBXI says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:52 pm

Km79, there's plenty of average players on both teams. Have you seen the muck from Micheal Burns and Paul Geaney at the other end? Eoghan make will always make mistakes because he tries to make things happen as opposed to passengers like Coen, Irwin, and McBrien. Eoghan also had 3 turnovers while keeping Gavin White very quiet. You should be looking at Reape, gave away a goal and nearly another tap over free for Clifford.

G

Green n Red Hayshed. says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:52 pm

Take the learnings management. Any amount of them . Mclouglins pace suits croke park but it' ends there. Reape with another school error. He's better than that.

T

Tony Freeman says:

N

No doubt says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:52 pm

For me mayo are playing ok and I thought defence doing ok. In fairness the mistake for the goal and a couple of frees on clifford added to our bad wides are the difference imo. It's not like we getting destroyed all over the field tho admittedly our retention from kickout is poor.

T

Two pointer says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:53 pm

Ryan can’t be taking on those 2 point frees unless he has a very high conversion rate from them, he’s right on his distance limit there and has to strain at them to make the distance which costs accuracy. Shot in the arm there for them to come away with nothing conceded after us getting the gift of a cheap free. EML is a liability in possession when the opposing team are in his face and he is surrounded. Paudie Clifford is causing all sort of problems too it seems to be McBrien that’s tracking him. Maybe McHale can help us pick up a few breaks from the kick outs we are well beaten in that area.

Y

You Three says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:55 pm

Anyone know why we're not seeing any two point attempts, thought there would be lots in a windless Croke Park, we've turned down multiple chances

J

March 30, 2025 at 4:55 pm

Kerry are looking good but they have to be tired and may fade in last 15.

G

GlasagusDearg. says:

March 30, 2025 at 4:57 pm

Not at the Races first half. Kerry more direct and quicker getting the ball forward, whereas we are slow and predictable. No Kick-out strategy and we are getting cleaned out in midfield. On top of that, we gift them a goal, with a terrible Kick-out and I have counted at least two passes direct to a Kerry player, under no pressure. We need to change second half and put in a performance, whatever about the result.

It's a miracle we haven't lost this game by around 15 points, the difference in the attack of both teams it was like we where playing 2 completely different sports, did we ever kick the ball once into the forwards? We have aidan in there try a long one at least, our midfield completely cleaned out, mattie was outplayed, I actually felt sorry for our defense the pressure they where on because we couldn't win any kickouts.

One big worry for me is the form of sam callinan, you wouldn't even know he was on the pitch he must be carrying some sort of injury.

I

It Means Nothing to Me says:

March 30, 2025 at 5:41 pm

Same old failings reappearing, alas. Scoring 1-12 won’t win you many finals, and while you can never question the effort or bravery of our lads, we are fairly limited technically. Far too many wides and a couple from right in front of the posts is a killer at this level. We also passed the ball to Kerrymen on at least three or four occasions, simple mistakes.

Kerry also hand passed a couple of goal chances over the bar, so this could have been a worse loss than it ultimately proved to be.

We are where we are.

Tommy+Joe says:

March 30, 2025 at 5:44 pm

That should have been much worse. Sligo won't be worried watching that. So many poor performances all over the pitch. Sickened by that showing. Kerry miles ahead of us
On another note, Clifford very disappointing today. Constantly whinging and trying to get lads booked for having the audacity to tackle him.

Y

You Three says:

March 30, 2025 at 5:45 pm

Disappointed but glad to get a game in the big house, biggest worry for me, outside of the poor return on scoring chances, was the press, pitch looked big on the short Kerry kickout. But fair play to Kerry, well deserved victory

M

Mayonaze says:

March 30, 2025 at 5:45 pm

Coldrick gave us nothing but we were AWFUL and I don’t think it made any difference.

The only positive I can say is that the players never gave up. That’s all. Some credit for that. But our middle sector were wiped out and none of them had any positive impact. Only possible excuse for Jordan is mental/physical fatigue. I don’t know how he can be expected to be right for championship with no break.

Our strategy. A throw back to previous seasons. Shyte.

Kerry fully deserved win. And did so with relative comfort despite missing tonnes of chances.

A bad day at the office.

Is David Clifford okay? I hope he didn't get hurt injuring Colm Reape.
Kerry were better, deserved to win, but the ref refused to apply barging or steps to Kerry who could just run into and keep rugby barging tackles.
To not issue a card to Gavin White or David Clifford was absolute Green and Gold jersey stuff.
At our end we have more steps than Riverdance and in their defehce we' were forced to prove the free.
Kerry were better but some of that scoreboard gap was that reffing style of worshipping at the Kerry altar of purist football.

A game we did'nt want, but I hoped that we would gain something from it, but I'm not something that we did, except emphasize the gulf and highlight all of the areas that need to be fixed. Kerry looked fitter, sharper and more tigerish and tighter in defence. They were quicker and more direct in transition. We were too slow, lateral and predictable. We were cleaned out in midfield, starved of primary possession and our Kick-out strategy, if we even have one, was a disaster. Kerry got their scores much easier and we got nothing from an embarrassing amount of attacks. I lost count of the number of our misplaced passes-shocking. We did'nt have many who could be happy with their performances, except Aido, Ryan, Enda and Jack.

Who the hell is training this team. They are good footballers but one of the basics your taught as a young lad is 'do not wait for the ball to come to you.' Go to the ball. Hence the goal and several turnovers. The sideways ball is gone. Direct fast ball as Kerry played today is the way to go. However it has been a useful exercise. But we need to change the coaching. I wish I knew who is responsible. Get rid of him. Rochef, ord? Don't know the training sessions. But we are in trouble and it is not the players. A great bunch of lads. Shite coaching staff. Lots of learnings but will they be learned? Neary was unquestionably our player of the league up to his injury, and he hasn't got much of a sniff since. We don't kick the ball. Look at how quickly Kerry do it..the space is there but only if you move it quickly. Perhaps we weren't bothered about it today. If so, fine.

But if we went out hard for this, then this is extremely concerning. We played a full midfield, half forward line if midfielders & got absolutely eaten alive by a relatively small Kerry middle 3rd. Unforgivable.

Unless we sort our own kickouts, we are going nowhere this year. We are decent on opposition kickout to my eye, but we are struggling on our own & this is nothing new.

And we need to move the ball quicker. We butchered so many opportunities by slowing it down & going lateral

Typical that the negativity is again aimed at management. We do not have a good standard of midfielder at the moment and you simply will not beat strong opposition without it. We got absolutely cleaned at midfield yet again. It was the same last week against a second string Donegal team. We haven't had a properly imposing midfield since the first Horan era. It's going on years now as a problem area. There'll be no serious talk of All Irelands until it's sorted.

In terms of Clifford - he's a fantastic talent, but could do less of the yapping at the ref and trying to buy frees. That nonsense is beneath him.

One was sent off for persistent fouling and was absolutely skint alive for every ball whilst the other was marking (allegedly- more so following) Padi Clifford who came away MOTM. What on earth was he watching?

Got a real lesson in forward play today. Our handpassing and unforced errors were shite. You can see Kerry have natural forwards on the field and played some lovely ball. We are all robotic and manufactured. No fluency and innovation in the attack outside ROD.

Joe O’Connor also had an excellent game in the middle today for Kerry. Bad day at the office for us.

Our front six consisted of one forward in Ryan. Irwin plays mf for Ballina. Aidan is a converted midfielder although he actually did well. Eoghan is a wing back. Reid is a midfielder as is Jordan. Too frustrated now and eager to head for home but if we should meet Kerry again the GAA could save a few euro on the referee and just give the whistle to David Clifford.

I find eoghan McLoughlin very frustrating. I would have taken him off after 25 mins as 2 bad turnovers and gave away soft free and then he showed why on the team with the goal. His workrate is super but at this stage I think the mistakes outweigh the good.

Not a lot of positives. Enda Aidan and Jack performance, and Adrian Phillips getting game time and making a save are my positives.

We were honest and relatively competitive. I expected Kerry to be more than 6 points better. No doubt the usual experts will blame the management, the system, the ref, the players, the pitch and the weather. The fact is we did incredibly well to stay in the Division and reasonably well not to be hammered today We missed a number of easy point chances but Kerry created goal chances and only got the one we gifted them

Re: eoghan mcL I'm inclined to agree, it's so frustrating as he capable of some things noone else in the squad can do, like he remains one of our best goal threats by punching holes cutting in from the left, but the amount of sloppy turnover and basic skills letting him down time and again and he's long enough around now to have ironed out that rustiness.

This game will soon be forgotten but some thoughts.
- McBrien at 6 experiment should quietly be parked, I'm not sure what it offers that he couldn't provide at 3
- paudie clifford ran amok all day long. Who was picking him up
- Jordan looks in need of a rest
- Good to see AOS finally score in a final, 1st score in 14 croke park finals an astonishing stat. I don't know why kerry persist with putting Dylan casey on him tho as AOS has won that duel handily a few times
- Kerry were hardly ominous themselves, some weaknesses there too (as there is with all the contenders tbf)

We were OK in the first half. Soft goal allowed Kerry to keep us at arms level length thereafter. Still we managed to bring it back to three but never looked like kicking on. Midfield not contesting enough on the kickouts. It's not all down to Reape. There's no Dohertys or McLoughlins in there able to sweep up breaking ball. Kerry much better in midfield and just about better in all other sectors. We looked 6 points the worse team. Too many soft turnovers from players who should know better at this level. Flynn looked a bit gassed, could do with a couple of weeks off. No doubt a fit Paddy and Tommy will slot back into the team when the time comes.

Don’t understand the big negative reaction after this , we were way outsiders outsiders for this one and a 6 point defeat to a a Kerry side with the quality of forwards as the Clifford’s can’t be a surprise. At least we didn’t take a hammering. We have to keep working at it, find a few scoring forwards and keep the faith. I see all the criticism about David Clifford ( and do agree about how he gets away with the hand offs all the time) buts let’s call it as it is he’s a generational player and we would love to have him in Mayo….

M

Mayo45 says:

March 30, 2025 at 6:38 pm

Call me naive but I don't think we went with our main kickout strategy there today because there's no way you repeatedly kick the ball out to an area where there are only 2 or 3 Mayo players v 4 or 5 Kerry players who were there to gobble up any breaking ball. I genuinely don't believe we gave a toss about today's game because of that. I'm not forgetting some of the awful mistakes we made when attacking though. We have a lot to work on, especially when it comes to handpassing and general decision-making when we're in attack. Lads running into traffic over and over again was so frustrating to watch. Also, it really saddens me that Tommy Conroy is out, we never seem to have a full deck to choose from, and he is a Rolls Royce of a player on his day. Imagine the damage he'd do now that there's more space in the defence. Hope we get to see him in action at some stage this year.

The midfield problem has been there for a few years now and for some reason people seem to equate Matt ruane scoring and his abilities as midfielder.when he doesn’t score he offers very little else. The lunacy of kicking every kickout out the hogan stand side is beyond belief.one in particular kicked out to enda Hession. The keeper may as well have held a sign up to tell Kerry where he was going. Now I am sorry but the management have to take responsibility for this as they are the people in charge of producing a tactical plan.obviously you can’t legislate for players making passing errors but what went on in the second half concerning the kickouts was a total embarrassment with mcstay looking on like a spectator

I also gave up season ticket this year but have gone to 2 home league games and both u20 games. Have also attended all of my clubs games this year. I think the poor football played by most intercounty senior teams last few years put me off initially and then I started looking at the cost of tickets etc.

Look at the value for the rugby yesterday. 20 for a ticket and Connacht put in effort to entertain supporters with music/ fireworks etc. I think GAA could learn allot about how to put on a show from yesterday

I thought we played well today - our tackling was amazing. We had good intent, speed and fitness. We won kickouts well in the first fifteen minutes or so and made hay then. Aidan knows how to kick (though we shouldn’t be relying on him long term.) I’m proud of him. When we won kickouts and had possession, we had some slick interplay in the Kerry D. This shows we’re coaching at a high level.
In addition, we never gave up.

However, we were killed on kickouts from about 15/20 mins on. Kerry were winning ours and theirs and that caused most of the damage.

Then, when we did have the ball, we had difficulty scoring. It’s a historic problem so we’re aware of it. Added to that, Kerry were very motivated and focussed today. They defended like demons and stopped us from scoring.

Even when we played well, we made a lot of passing mistakes in the first half and this cost us scores. At this level, we get punished for mistakes. Kerry’s handling was quite flawless.

The lucky goal they got from a Reape/Mayo mistake went a long way to their win.

Kerry are gearing up for an All-Ireland this year, it seems clear to me. They played very well today.

I do believe we had a good showing in general. There’s lots to learn from. We are not back the pack. We need to put more accurate scoring threat into the team and do much better on kickouts. Onwards we go.

Mayo were brutally bad, but so were Kerry, only difference is Kerry’s forwards are 40% more efficient in front of goal compared to ours. And they have Clifford. Yet we kept with them, keeping it to a six point game in the second half, had a purple patch in the middle of second half clawing back a seven point defecit to within 3, with a goal. Thought we might kick on, but lost our way again. Stupid misplaced suicide short passing cost us today. And bad decision making. Kerry was there for the taking but with no fluidity in attack, extremely disjointed spells of gameplay, and not one direct long ball into that full forward line or O Se, what do you expect. Our kick outs and Midfield were not great today. However when we ran directly at them for the goal they were defenselessly suspect on many occasions, but we catered to them with lateral and backward passing. We have good strong, pacey, physical players. However they let themselves down by not taking easy chances when they came. Don’t understand why O Connor is not starting, he is way more attack minded than Coen. Think Kerry are very good but in no way are they the killer team of the past. Very close championship this year. However I don’t think Mayo are quiet at the top 5 table in terms of quality, but we are not far away either. Let’s hope we improve 30% come championship, if we do we will match anyone. I would fight hard for a Connaught Championship, anything else is bonus territory.

E

Eighty Five says:

March 30, 2025 at 7:17 pm

An error strewn performance in many respects. How many times did we lay off a ball straight to a Kerry player? Is colour differentiation an issue amongst some players? I’m not being facetious saying that either, it could be a legitimate issue? I think each team’s away kit needs to be a monochromatic contrast to their actual kit.
That aside, it’s a league final, it would have been nice to win, but I’m not losing any sleep that we didn’t. Kerry looked sharper and fitter today, hungrier to win each ball. We looked sluggish. Jordan definitely needs a breather, Ruane seems to be struggling a bit for pace too.
There’s zero point in catastrophising over this game. A game that we really didn’t want to be in, if we’re honest. The GAA need to realise that ridiculous scheduling is ultimately making a mockery of competitions. Even the championship feels like a rushed spectacle come June/July. Penalty shoot outs to facilitate bad decisions!

It was a very poor kickout by Reape which handed Kerry the advantage which they never surrendered, he saved a certain goal later which I suppose evens it out. Mayo turned back from a scoring chance too many times throughout the match as they didnt have the confidence to shoot whereas Kerry are playing fast ball which gives the forwards more space. Everything Kerry does goes through Paudie Clifford, the day he is marked out of a game Kerry will be in some trouble.

Kerry have been the benchmark for kicking the ball for as long as I can remember. If you ever listen to Tomas Ose or Pat Splainne on the Sunday game they speak about how they play “football”. Tomas Ose said that before every training session before they start, the players spend half an hour kicking to each other off both feet. We don’t train players like that. We just find runners and hopefully develop footballers whereas we should be finding footballers and building their fitness to an elite level.

Kerry cleaned up at midfield with high fielding & got 80% of breaking ball, that stat means Mayo are on the back foot for a lot of the 70 minutes but defence played well considering all the turnovers & missed passes that destroyed Mayo's attacks. Midfield has to improve big time & forwards has to try & come up with more direct attacks, when they did go direct they got good scores, they will get it right yet hopefully.

Our keeper need a break...his confidence seems to be at an all time low. He's not helped either by the lack of movement from players not making themselves available for the kick out.
If they don't sort out a kick out strategy they won't be going anywhere in the championship.

I thought the tone was set for the midfield performance today from the throw up when Carney was swatted away and left on his arse. Not aggressive enough for starters

So frustrating watching mayo today. Feel like I’ve been watching that performance for the past 15 years. Mayo back and over up top, no guile, poor execution of kicking and picked off time and again

Unless these u20 forwards develop we will have to put up with more of the same in the next few years

Greennred Hayshed, I hope we've been cleverly disguising our tactical intentions the past 3 years. Be right up there with the Trojan horse manoeuvre.
At least we should on paper have 2 games against (and no disrespect meant) lower tier opponents, before get to the meatier side of things to try and get going again. The team appears to be pretty much set, so let's buckle up and see what happens. No unbeatable team out there.

I would not blame Reape for the goal. The full gack was standing waiting for the ball to come to him and two kerry players raced to the ball and goal. Thereafter he had to go long but our midfield were non existent and that has been a problem for ages. Forwards could not execute 3 yard hand passes time after time. Forwards could not kick points from close range. I watched the div 2 final and there were 5 or 6 2 pointers scored. EMC is a good player but I think he came late to the game shows lack of cuteness at times. I still voted him for him as potm. Players did give their all and no lack of effort. In truth Sligo will not fear us we are a very average team.

Draw a line on that and move on. Important match coming up in Castlebar in a short week. No psychological damage done today and the league is now in the rear view mirror. Connacht title is a realistic target and it would be great to lift the Nestor cup again and anything after that will be bonus territory. There is no utterly scary team in it this year, so momentum would be an important factor, avoiding injuries to key players and building out a panel.

Commiserations.

I'm going to be brutally honest here and no offence is intended.

Kevin McStay would want to watch that game again because Cliffords marker ( Hession ? Open to correction) was consistently fouling him and he should have been booked.

Bring 6.2 Kevin doesn't mean different rules apply to you.

Lads Aidan OShea is a fine player from good Kerry stock however what's the point of him playing in there and you don't launch it in to him.

ODonoghue was a lucky boy not to see red at the end and that would've been very costly next week as Mayo without him look toothless upfront.

Kerry left 2.7 or so out there and the scoreline was flaterring i felt.

I wasn't overly enamoured with Kerry and our failings of last year were still evident with poor wides.

Mayo have fine athletes but the lack real killers going forward.

One side note, Every county my own included has gobshites but what I saw today with some Mayo supporters would embarrass any county.
One lad dressed as a rooster head to toe in green and red was obnoxious beyond words and another calling the ref a Meath Cxxx infront of young kids was another.

I'd words with one and I don't care what jersey is on your back you act with respect to others.

Anyway,

Best of luck in the Championship and please God we'll meet again in the summer.

Disagree with Green and Red there. Spillane in particular is very partisan about how great Kerry are so I’d pay no heed to that.
However some problems highlighted today which can be put down to coaching and it will be a tall order to iron them all out during the 25 championship, if we could iron out 2/3 of them out, then in with a chance.
1) Middle third cleaned out. Solving this requires players positioning correctly and outnumbering the opposition. Several times our fielders broke it in the direction of other Mayo players but Kerry often had 2 vs 1 on the ground. Have we players to do that, Davitt Neary, Diarmaid?
2) Reape’s kickouts. Several times he kicked to a Mayo man in a good position but outnumbered. Could see the risk before he did it. The goal was a gimme. I’m suggesting the sun was a problem in the 1st half but doesn’t explain the 2nd. Just like the Ros game where there goalie kept kicking to the same crowded area. Kerry’s kickouts kept getting better from a a poor start with more and more short ones as the game went on. We had far fewer short options (runs). Also there has to be strategies and calls especially when opponents have the press on, decoys, clustering in the middle and breaking, overloading one side and breaking on the other, drawing in and over the top to opposite 50, not one of these are being deployed. Hand signals should be used.
3) Inside runs not happening. When Andy played for us he would break both sides multiple times until he lost the defender. Ryan is capable of this, guessing Irwin could be coached to do it, Tommy C on return only needs 1 or 2 of those runs to lose a defender and the outside players need to look for the kick pass which isn’t happening to a great extent. I hope it’s not the coaching because Kerry identified the kicking game from the off this season and showed how well it works.
Several players looked tired, Jordan subbed but could just as easily have been Mattie or Jack. Bad day when all 3 are off.
Ps few complaints here about Hessian for our MOM because of P Clifford’s impact but he was our best player over 70 (Aido good for majority of the game but understandably faded) and Enda on loads of ball and linked a lot of play. Marking is partly zone defense so can’t be blamed for all P Clifford’s impact. McBrien was also very quiet. In fact a lot of our players were below their best, it is possible there was a very hard session or 2 to prepare for Sligo. Hope so. Today’s starters mostly need rest and recovery this week. Subs and fringe could do an early week hard session. Reape will surely be out for at least 1 game, maybe more.
Ps2 Coldrick not as bad as people said. About 5/6 marginal calls went against us but a couple for them too. Only 1 or 2 bad mistakes where Aido should have gotten a free.
I normally say support management and team. Team may have had some fatigue but have to be critical of management today. Coaching wise Monaghan would beat us handy in a championship game based on this weekend.

Said the same thing about colour of jerseys. If I was having trouble, then I suspect some of the stray passes were that reason. Both teams were quite dark. And one team a variation of the colour we normally play in. I know some kid designed that jersey but it has no connection to Mayo colours at all.

Kerry have always been the best kick passers of the ball with perhaps the exception of the great Dublin team. You can dismiss Splainne if you want but you can’t dismiss what you see on the field. Kerry are a million miles ahead of us. As West Kerry said, we had Aiden inside and not one high ball in to him. We have been programmed to run the ball, we don’t work on kicking it. Kerry are excellent kickers, one bounce wing side of the attacker, never have to break stride.

Omg West Kerry to hear about the few ( I hope) obnoxious Mayo supporters. There is absolutely no need for this kind of behaviour towards rival fans- apologies!

Kerry beat us today playing in 2nd gear. I thought that Hession, McHugh, McLoughlin Callanan, Coyne, Aiden, Ryan and Neary ( as a sub) tried very hard. Most of our forwards are midfielders for their clubs and thus we have little or no penetration and don't know how to score.

Midfield were completely outclassed- possition 90:10 maybe!
We had 6 or 7 players that were innocuous/missing today!

Where was Fergie B today? Why did we not rotate at half time?

Towey should be starting surely?

We need a reaction v Sligo next week as they will not fear this very average foireann Mhuigeo!

I have been hearing these excuses for 40 years about heavy training loads and not showing our hand .at what point over the last 3 years has this management shown this master plan especially on the kickout.we no longer have big ball winning midfielders so there has to be a plan to gain possession. The facts of the last 3 years show there is no master plan.unfortunately we are a very ordinary team at the moment a combination of not having sufficient quality of players and a very average management team

A few slightly Mayo tinted glasses on the Reape injury. He got it giving Clifford a bit of rough treatment. Not for the 1st time, got away with one in 1st half when he could have seen either red or a free in. I know Clifford was moaning a bit but I’d save he’s a bit black and blue tonight, definitely got a few hits. McHugh did about as well as he could given the quality of some of the ball and position received. No goals conceded and turned him over a few times and did concede some frees a few very marginal and 1 or 2 probably unnecessarily. Keeping him to 4 or 5 from play is a good day especially given the amount of ball going in.

@WestKerry can’t disagree with much of that. Mayo were incredibly poor today and are toothless without Rod. Kerry won despite only playing above average.

A few comments..AOS gets fouled like Clifford all the time but gets a fraction of the protection David gets. It’s happening years…like some peculiar national joke. Incredibly frustrating

When Rod was hauled to the floor by the Kerry defender, Mr Coldrick showed no card. Your thoughts on that decision? It was a big call at a time when Mayo had found some momentum.

J

With the new rules easier to press kick outs which means the team with high ball winners have a huge advantage. Kerry were on a different planet to us in that department today. Mayo were poor today, they offer so much in the tackle and winning dirty ball, but their shooting was terrible.
Jordan Flynn takes so many pot shots in games for very little return.

Shuffle Deck, you’re wrong about Reape’s injury. He got it catching a ball (from going over the bar), and if I’m not mistaken Clifford tackled him afterwards.
Also, can someone also explain why a player with the ball can shove a defender in a ‘hands off’ fashion and it’s not considered a foul?

B

Big Mike says:

March 30, 2025 at 9:18 pm

I think that is very clever by McStay. Clifford won’t get those frees again this summer. I’m not convinced by Kerry I have to say. I was at the Kerry Armagh game last summer where Armagh ran them into the ground. I’ve not seen anything to convince me that they’ve improved. I think it’s fairly open this year. Ulster will be some minefield, Donegal, Armagh, Tyrone, add Monaghan to that. Impossible to pick a winner. Dublin and Kerry then completely undercooked.

@westkerry.why is O'Donohue lucky what did he do wrong i can't recall from tv. Regarding both cliffords they're class acts and I'm afraid persistent fouling will follow them everywhere and it would be negligent if players didn't try stop them. Btw the younger lad needs to stop whinging as frustrating and all as it must be and let his natural talent do the talking. After watching that today I think there's a couple of teams out there better than kerry and we in the 5 to 8 bracket.

@Eighty Five: Slightly mistaken. Clifford illegally shoulder charged him within the small square, no tackle, hence the free out.

I am also neither a Mayo man or a Kerry man.I thought today and for the last few years that Refrees are giving David a lot of easy frees. Colderick today gave them. You could not look at Clifford but it was a free in. He is at the ref all the time looking as if it is a crime to tackle me. Also when are refs going to cop on to him when he gets possession the first thing he does is puts the ball in one hand and uses the other had to directly push his marker away with a hand off. This is a foul. This is in the Rugby game but not part of GAA football. The frees given to him today were not given the far end .
