Game day – chaos could be key as Cliffords come to town

Game day – chaos could be key as Cliffords come to town

The inter-county season, once it gets going, is all one big, undignified rush.

Already we’re at Round 5 of this year’s National League, which today sees us entertain Kerry at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park. Throw-in is 3pm, Tyrone’s Seán Hurson is the ref and this game isn’t on TV but Midwest will have live radio commentary on it.

This match is our third of four home fixtures in this year’s Division One campaign. Our previous two outings on home turf have seen us taking a pounding at the hands of Galway while a fortnight ago we came with a strong finish to see off Tyrone. That win, along with the point we came away with last Saturday night after drawing with Armagh, puts us in a relatively decent position to complete the fight of holding onto our top tier status for another year.

Defeat today at the hands of a Kerry side who have won two and lost two of the four games they’ve played wouldn’t necessarily be a fatal blow to our aim of avoiding relegation. With a trip to Derry and a home match against Donegal still to come in our final two games, it would, though, leave us with precious little elbow room coming down the stretch.

No more than ourselves, Kerry are taking a while to adapt to the new playing rules this year. Their two defeats, strangely both home games, came at the hands of Donegal and Dublin, both of which seemed to have a better handle on the opportunities afforded by the new world we find ourselves in than the Kingdom did.

That said, Jack O’Connor’s charges aren’t exactly struggling badly in this environment. Their two wins – both gained up in Ulster where they were able to bag a hatful of goals, five against Derry and three the last day against Tyrone – provides evidence that Kerry have figured out better than most how to hit the net with greater regularity in these changed times.

It helps, of course, to have player like David Clifford in your ranks. He’s always been a player with an eye for goal and the extra space the new rules afford him, if last Sunday up in Pomeroy is anything to go by, provides greater opportunity for the Fossa clubman to have the umpire reaching for the green flag.

If Clifford – aided and abetted by the brother, whose possession stats the last day were off the charts – cuts loose in similar fashion today then we all know how that movie will end.

As Colm Boyle pointed out on the pod during the week, though, we match up quite well against Kerry. Their greatest strength is in attack whereas we’re doing fairly okay at the back so far. They probably have a marginal advantage on us in the middle third – though that depends on who we field there (and, of course, how they perform) – but their backline isn’t watertight and, while our forward unit hasn’t been keeping defenders awake at night worrying, when we stir ourselves properly we can do a bit of damage.

Our forward movement in the first half against Armagh was painfully slow and laboured. We bucked up significantly after the break, though, as we shifted to a more direct style of play, deploying a high press and fighting and winning primary possession from the resultant long restarts.

Our second half recovery against Armagh was uplifting in large part because it felt like the foot-to-the-floor Mayo style we all became so accustomed to back in the good old days. As I noted in my Patreon column the other day, Mayo fans want a bit of excitement from their team and Saturday night provided the first hint in a long while that this might well be something that will feature in our playbook this year.

The circle we have to square today is how we inject the greater sense of urgency in attack that we undoubtedly will need while at the same time containing a Kerry forward line that could hurt us badly if they get the opportunity to do so.

The fans want to see us throw off the shackles but, in doing so, we have to do what we can to lock down Kerry’s danger men, Clifford most of all.

That’s going to be no easy task, which explains, I guess, why Kerry are such strong favourites to win today. You’d have to concede that the tag is a deserved one but that doesn’t mean we’re without hope either.

The less predictable we are, the more dangerous an opponent we can be. Part of that unpredictability needs to be when we choose to let loose the chaos. If we get that choice right, we’ll be in the hunt today.

As I said at the top, today’s match isn’t on the box so, for those who won’t be there, this place will have to do as the alternative. So too, for club members, will our match-day Discord chat, which I imagine will be fairly fizzing from 3pm onwards. We’ll have our usual Final Whistle pod up on Patreon later on and I’ll have a match report here as well.

Today’s an early start for me and another one that leaves me with many miles to go before I sleep. Hopefully by the time I do get to lay my weary head down tonight it will be with some satisfactory recollections on a job well done by the lads today. One completed with a nice helping, at the right moments, of dash and disarray.

Right, enough yapping, it’s time to hit the road. Let’s get this done. Up Mayo.

Good summary as ever WJ, get anything from today and it will be another positive step, lose and how we perform will become a talking point. If we handle the Clifford's reasonably well then I see this as a job well done. If we can break even around the middle over the 70 minutes is another challenge but do that, then we get to see if our attacking style is developing. This is probably our most challenging game with this Kerry team attacking threats but a game that I am looking forward to attending later.

Unfortunately I can't make today's game so I'll settle for Radio Kerry and informed views here and on the Kerry forum.

Mayo certainly have named a strong team and that's a statement of intent.

Kerry named the same 15 but I'd expect possible 1 or 2 changes.

My fear for Kerry is the 5 games in a row with 3 away games.

Tommy+Joe says:

Out of interest, what is the Kerry forum, West Kerry?
Love to see how other counties view games. Your gang are probably not as catastrophic as ours. (and I include myself in that bracket!).

You'd expect at least 12 of that Kerry team to be starting come championship. Very strong team named.

Love a few outside views makes debates much better.

Trust me it can be as negative there in regards Kerry and the locals are getting very restless.

G

No O'Shea, Brosnan, Morley, White, O'Sullivan, Moynihan. Mayo very generous odds given those lads out and we practically all the championship squad less Durcan from last year's championship available.

Feel a bit for lads who have been on the bench last 5 or so weeks with no game time and not on it this week. If they not getting a chance what hope have the 20 lads flogging themselves in the development squad.

T

Thedarkyfinn says:

I'll go for a couple of points win hoping last week was the green shoots moment. Probably be a couple of changes from what has been named so cant read to much into what has been published. Looking forward to it, if we have a good plan for the 2 lads we will win

T

Tommy+Joe says:

March 1, 2025 at 11:48 am

Thanks West Kerry.
I love getting the views on here from Galway and Kerry and the likes. Generally, most of us GAA fans are very fair minded. At matches, I usually have a decent conversation with opposition fans around me. It's nice to be able to have those conversations online too.
May the best team win today!

M

Mayo Forever says:

March 1, 2025 at 3:06 pm

Of course many of the Kerry forwards are class and need a good defensive structure to handle them when Kerry in possession. But my biggest fear is we like against Armagh will be to ponderous when in possession ourselves. The team showed for 30 minutes in that second half that they are as good as around. Armagh probably after last seasons celebrations were probably lacking fitness for final 20 minutes but still The "Mayo Chaos" was a joy to behold in contrast to their style back and over across the arc in opening 15 minutes of the first half, a period by the way when they were on top.

Hope All,management and players alike have learned from last week.
Go at them relentlessly when in possession from the outset. Mayo cant be fortunate enough to come from 9 points down on 2 successive weekends.

Kerry have some fantastic individuals but as a team they dont quite match that so nothing really to fear. Their recent record ordinary enough so why fear them. Added to that this is their 4th game on successive weekends which may see them tiring in final quarter.
So no reason not to go at them from word go. Good performance as seen in second half is what we need and win or lose at least they can be proud of the effort and we will be entertained. Come on lads, chaos for as much of the game as possible. A win here is as possible in either of our final 2 league games and 2 more points will be necessary for survival.
Go for it.

G

GlasagusDearg. says:

Great first half performance, with the wind. Unfortunately let Clifford in for a soft goal-should have been buried out over the end line.

O

Ontheroad13 says:

March 1, 2025 at 3:41 pm

This is the mayo we all want to see, brilliant around the middle and playing with real pace and intensity and pressing high up the pitch, we have kicked some brilliant scores obviously the conditions has helped too.

B

Bonni Boyler says:

March 1, 2025 at 3:45 pm

Great First half performance. Hopefully that breeze is not the difference in the second.
Debate over whether RODs last minute side-line kick can be 2 points. TBC .Shame to concede a goal but we have to push for the win here when we have dominance

W

Willie Joe says:

March 1, 2025 at 3:45 pm

That wasn’t Clifford it was O Beaglaoich who got the goal but agreed no way should he have been let in along the end line for it.

C

Only thing that was a soft goal in.

O

Ontheditch says:

March 1, 2025 at 3:47 pm

Nicely set up for second half. Light breeze but it means no two pointers for Mayo in second half. Coen rounded too easily for the goal but God first half performance. Carney playing as third midfielder, big help

M

Great win and a lot of good performances, McHugh did really well on Clifford. Plenty of players getting game time with still a few to come back so not in a bad place. 1 more point and that should be safety assured and all focus on the championship then. Who did midwest give the MOM to ?

S

Supermac says:

March 1, 2025 at 5:53 pm

Km79 we could probably do with losing one of the last 2 games lest we end up in a final :-o

Thoroughly entertaining game and another endorsement of the rules. Glad kerry came roaring back in the 2nd half, the kind of test and reaction that will stand to us big time.

Workrate and pressing very good pretty much across the board, Donncha McHugh done as well as could be expected on clifford, you'd take a 4 point concession all day long.
RoD was unreal, looking forward to seeing the sideline kick back, honestly one of the best scores I seen in years.

Carney my 2nd pick for motm after ROD, thought he was quietly excellent throughout, an awful lot went through him

J

JoeG says:

March 1, 2025 at 6:01 pm

Great entertainment although it looked like going pear shaped late on. Ryan more like his old self today and presume he got motm. Did commentary explain why in the second half when Mayo were awarded a free the Kerry lad just dropped the ball instead of handing it to an opponent but it wasn’t brought forward? Not nitpicking over this because we won but was there a tweak to that rule?

Didn’t think anyone was poor today although Steven Coen allowed O’Beaglaoich to breeze past without laying a hand on him. That is nitpicking!

M

Mike K says:

March 1, 2025 at 6:04 pm

Have to say i was massively impressed with so many of the players after the game. Was there with my 5 year old so we were waiting for pictures afterwards. The Mayo lads, and plenty of the Kerry lads, we're brilliant with supporters. Jordan Flynn in particular was great, especially considering he can't have been in the best of moods when he went down the tunnel but he gave everyone his time.

T

Tommy+Joe says:

March 1, 2025 at 6:06 pm

Very good victory today. Definitely things to worry about, namely our 3rd quarter collapse, but the reaction to going behind was tremendous. We've lost similar games a lot over the last few years.
Lot of positives performance wise. Thought McBrien, McHugh, Aidan, Ruane and ROD were excellent. Boland coming on was very cool-headed and redeemed his error last week.
I think what an awful lot of us wanted was improved performances and we've definitely had things go in that direction over the last two weeks.
Well done team and management on the performance.

@JoeG: No tweak to the rules there. Just a slip/miss by the ref (Boyler & Michael D as confused as any of us).

Yes McHugh is getting there and probably more content at 3 than McBrein who's preferred position is 6. It would be good to see our defenders getting in some hand blocks on two pointers. Clifford had at least 4 two point attempts dropping short today. All subs made an impact, McLaughlin gave us a bit of impetus in the last quarter. Delighted for Boland. His calmness on the ball was just what we needed

Fantastic win, to beat Kerry is always a good win. The first half was very good, it took Mayo a while to figure things out early second half but they started to go more direct & it paid off big time. Aidan O Shea cleaned up in midfield & set up some great moves, great to see all the team giving it a right go, future looks bright.

Very enjoyable game and atmosphere .

Some very impressive performances across the pitch from mayo , thought carney, Mchugh, Matty, hession , Ryan and Aiden were impressive the list is long . There was no bad performance .
The last 15 was championship pace . Brining on Mchlaughlin was torture from a Kerry point of view . Everytime he got the ball it took 3 Kerry players out of action to mark him. You know what he is going to do but trying to stop him is something else when the legs are tired .
Ryan’s free to steady the ship at the end of the first half was top drawer .
Well worth the visit into Mchale park. Mayo are back might be a bit of a step but the crowd were definitely enjoying it .

Not sure what people expect in some of the comments , it’s rare you’ll play a top side without them having a period , it’s how yiu weather it & we did damn good there today .

Not going to go into the performance too much I just want to say it was great to feel a bit of electric in mchale park today , it’s been a while . Like I always say that is our job and we need to be in training for a Connacht final showdown in may , I know I know we have Sligo & Leitrim to contend with but in all reality we should come through that . 4 th of may I think it’s pencilled in for we need to make it an absolute cauldron

Overall a very satisfying performance, the game can change with midfield dominance, we were strong in the first half and largely thanks to AOS got on top in the last 10 minutes or so. Once Kerry got on top, they scored heavily. Defensively, we did well, midfield broke even and our forwards showed that they can score. Darren McHale did a lot of dirty work, McHugh is tigerish, newer players did fine, this is a great learning opportunity and for me, the best thing was another strong finish, which is a great change from previous years. The players look more confident as are the fans. Well done all, and league 1 status is still in our control.

Match report up, Final Whistle pod up, how nice it would be if this drive back to Dublin could do itself! Not to be, sadly, but, as I said on the pod, the win shortens the road home for me.

Thanks Tsu for clearing that up. If it had been brought to the 13m line it was a tap over and Thank God we weren't punished for it at the final whistle.

Mike H,

David spends literally hours on the field with kids.

I've never seen a player mobbed like he is.

He would not deliberately ignore anyone and your comment is bang out of order.

Ah yeah in fairness to David Clifford he is completely generous with his time, he is mobbed after every game

At the end of the day, if Clifford does or doesn’t (and I’m in camp he does) give time to fans after the game, it is his choice and his alone. He may have had any amount of reasons for in the moment just wanting to get off the pitch. May well have been raging that he missed a two pointer, bit of a knock to have looked at, maybe just want a shower and hit the road, whatever the case may be, he isn’t a commodity, nor is any other player. This type of nonsense about what a player did or didn’t do beyond football is completely irrelevant.

Imagine being an amateur player and going for coffee, getting a haircut, buying clothes, food shopping, just every where you go people wanting you to sign autographs or get your photo. David Clifford gets that burden more than any other player. It is a burden if you think on the fact that he gets that every day every where he goes.
I know of him coming out from the dressing room to a kid from up the country when he heard the kid had traveled down to see him and hadn't managed to get photo with him.
