Fixture details for FBD finals

Fixture details for FBD finals

This year’s pre-season FBD competition is set to conclude this weekend, with Cup, Shield and Plate deciders taking place, thus ensuring that all counties involved will have got three run-outs against opponents within the province before the more serious stuff gets underway the following weekend.

The action starts on Friday evening with the Shield final. This will be contested by Roscommon and Sligo (both of whom we incidentally beat in the two group games) and this decider is fixed for the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence. Throw-in under the lights at Bekan is 7.30pm on Friday evening and the ticket link for the game is here.

Bekan is also the venue on Saturday evening evening for the Plate final between London and Leitrim. This one throws in at the earlier time of 6.30pm, though, of course, the floodlights will still be needed for it. The ticket link for the game is here.

The Cup final between ourselves and Galway is fixed for St Jarlath’s Park, Tuam (aka Tuam Stadium) on Sunday, with a 1pm throw-in. The ticket link for this FBD El Clásico is here.

Tickets are also available offline, of course, via selected Centra and SuperValu outlets. In addition, it’s expected that the three deciders will be streamed live by Connacht GAA but there are no links as yet to point you towards on that.

Incidentally, our match against Galway will mean a rare enough outing at Senior level in Tuam for us. The most recent time we played there was during Covid when the National League was resumed in October 2020 after a seven-month gap and we enjoyed a rather freakish fifteen-point win over them in a game played behind closed doors.

Prior to that we contested an FBD semi-final against them at the venue in January the previous year. The game ended in a draw but they shaded the penalty shoot-out 4-2 to advance to that year’s pre-season decider. 2011 was the most recent time we met in Tuam before then, in a League match that we won handily enough.

Sunday’s meeting will, for both teams, be more about getting game time into players’ legs than it will be about the result. That’s the whole point of the FBD, after all. But Galway v Mayo in Tuam is a rarity to be savoured and chances are there will be a decent crowd in attendance for the game.

Plenty of Mayo interest in that DCU vs UL game (up to 14 lads, 12 UL and 2 DCU, potentially involved) on Tuesday evening (streamed free on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9wuVDiRi9Q - everyone will be hoping to avoid the loser of that one in R3), with Wednesday evenings Queens vs UCC the other streamed game (but no Mayo involvement there).

FBD - the competition with no losers really. If I managed a team myself, lost all games and lost in the Plate playoff, I could at least put on my CV: managed county X to an FBD Plate final!

Half time
UL 1-11 DCU 0-6
Mayo players have accumulated 9 points of UL’s scores.
Cian McHale 0-4 (one 2p) Irwin 0-2 (one 2p), Dawson (one 2p), Morahan 0-1

McHale outstanding and Jack Melvin really impressive around the middle.

Morahan getting enough of it from Lorcan O’Dell. Dawson and Irwin quiet enough so far bar flashes of class

O

Ontheditch says:

January 13, 2026 at 8:36 pm

Great first half from UL. Lead 1-11 to 0-6 at ht.
All Mayo lads featuring, McHale very sharp at ff. Conal Dawson getting through a lot of good work. Good battle between Morahan and Lorcan O Dell, evens.
Fascinating second half, it's not over for sure

1-18 to 0-12 for UL. Cónal Dawson great second half and Morahan wins the big battle, Lorcan O Dell substituted. McNamara from Clare suberb in the middle

C

Clubman51 says:

Great second half from all the Mayo boys. Hurley tapped another one over for UCD to finish with 0–6

Does anyone know if Melvin is involved with Mayo ? Very impressed with him.

If Galway or Roscommon had the amount of players playing (and playing well) we would be talking enviously.
The future is bright !

Without getting carried away there are at least 5 accurate forwards to add to conroy and o donohue. I know it's very early and most might not make the grade or could take a number of years but it definitely gives hope and gets the juices flowing. It might be enough to get crowds out again. Anyone who thinks I'm raving...save your thumb .

For me. Things are definitely looking up. 6 two pointers on Sunday and all the Mayo lads doing well for UL tonight. A few more scored by our players in the game this evening. People can say it was a weak Roscommon team, but it proves the lads have the ability to score. I doubt anyone would say DCU were weak. Boyler said on the podcast, that you must practice that and it looks like we are.

J

JoeG says:

January 14, 2026 at 7:35 am

DCU/UL was a great watch for Mayo supporters. The commentator seemed quite shocked that DCU didn't swat UL aside. As others have said McHale, Melvin, Dawson and Morahan were excellent for UL and I thought Darragh Joyce put in a great shift for the losers.
Scorebeo have the FBD final as being on TG4 not YouTube. Maybe a typo?

T

TsuDhoNim says:

January 14, 2026 at 10:12 am

@Moy2Pointer: Finbar came on with 19 minutes left, but didn't look 100%, or anything close to it. Never got over half pace and never grabbed the game the way he can. Hopefully the extra week to R3 can help him push on, he was DCU's x-factor last year in their win up until his injury.

No word on injuries for O'Loughlin or McGreal for UL, but both were outstanding for UL in their league winning campaign and both help strengthen them so you'd expect both to be back in if/when they're available.

C

Clubman51 says:

January 14, 2026 at 11:30 am

McLoughlin was injured for Westport’s under 21 campaign. The same as Eoghan, seems to be prone to injury. Maybe something to do with that explosive speed.

Hopefully back to play some part for DCU and Mayo.

As an aside, the "commentator" for the UL match was brutal; he chatted away about everything except the action, didn't/couldn't recognise players, the rules themselves seemed a bit of a mystery, as were substitutions. Have made that gripe, it was great to have the stream!
BTW, I think Coggins came on?

I would say the lads that were playing sigerson this week will get a run out on Sunday and some lads need game time. I think there will be a lot of changes so this is the squad ive gone with:

Jack Livingstone
Jack Coyne
David McBrien
John McMonagle
Sean Morahan
Sam Callinan
Fenton Kelly
Nathan Moran
Jack Carney
Conal Dawson
Adam Barrett
Kobe McDonald
Cian McHale
James Carr
Niall Hurley

Subs:
Adrian Phillips,
Eoin McGreal
Rory Brickendon
Michael Plunkett
Oisin Jordan
Dylan Thornton
Liam Donoghue
Frank Irwin
Paul Towey
Tom Lydon
Kuba Callaghan

Still yet to play this year:
Diarmuid O'connor
Darren McHale
Cillian O'Connor
Matthew Ruane
Donnacha McHugh
Fergal Boland
Darragh Reilly
Hugh O'Loughlin
Jack Melvin
Finbar Mcgloughlin
Darragh Joyce

Are Conor Loftus and Eoghan Mcgloughlin on the panel this year does anyone know?

T

The west is best says:

January 14, 2026 at 7:26 pm

All the Colleges semifinals will be at neutral venues I'd imagine. Most will probably be played at the COE. Gortnor Abbey with 4 current Mayo Under 20's in their ranks look like a sure thing. Ballyhaunis have a nice team, but will be up against an improving St. Joseph's team. Hard to call the A semifinals, but Gerald's will definitely need to have some of their more experienced players back to challenge Jarlath's. They have been shorthanded throughout the group stages.

O

Outside of the Boot says:

January 14, 2026 at 9:12 pm

That is an exciting team Mayo4698, only change id like to see McBrien at 6 and Dawson at wingback.
Carr, Mchale and Hurley is class , id like to see the two Mchales in team but maybe that's being greedy.

You just get feeling forwards are thriving in this environment and Andy is big part of it.
Nathan Moran and Jack Carney together are big men and should rule the air .
Id like to see Liam Donoghue get a start

It's all really postive and with few lads coming back, we will strengthen the defence, its all good do hopefully good start to league and everyone get behind the lads
Loftus would be a massive addition but remember its not been that long since tragedy so probably not see him before Paddy day .

T

TsuDhoNim says:

January 14, 2026 at 9:47 pm

@The west is best: The venues were all straight from https://connachtgaa.ie/pps/pps-fixtures-results/ at the time, but they seem to have overwritten the ones mentioned above with TBC now so you're probably spot on there. Nothing visible in the rules to dictate who'd have that home advantage or why, so neutral/COE makes way more sense.

Good results for ATUG (Conor Reid kicking a pair of 2s the Mayo highlight on the night) and UG (Tom O'Flaherty kicking 0-3 and putting in a solid shift) helps bump the Mayo interest heading into R3 of the Sigerson.

@MARTIN DONNELLAN: Hasn't been one of the 63 to be involved across the early games against Galway/Longford/Meath/Offaly/FBD or mentioned across any of the media, with the word around suggesting he's unlikely to be part of the panel at the moment.

Mayo guaranteed a couple more representatives reaching the QF stage of the Sigerson with DCU (Joyce & McLaughlin) travelling to Galway to face ATU Galway (Collins, Reid, Lavelle, Dolan & Crean) in R3.

UG (O'Flaherty, MacMonagle, Meaney & D Hurley) facing a home battle against a solid MTU Kerry side.

Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup Round Three

Just a thought on the upcoming league. With the new format in championship i reckon we need to avoid relegation big time. Provincial finalists and next 8 best league positions make up the 16 teams for Sam .fair enough relegation to division 2 would still get into the 16 if beaten by roscommon in semi final but imagine the following year and the real possibility of finishing near the bottom of division 2 and then it's real squeaky bum time regarding making top 16 for 2027..am I right or again just overthinking. Any thoughts?

T

TsuDhoNim says:

January 16, 2026 at 9:58 am

@Driveitlong&hard: No.

@Winston: Jack O'Shea had 4 of the previous Texaco awards, so depends how you view the changing of the names if that's considered equal. David's 3 being the modern record since '95 and the current iteration of the award.

Solid performance from Dara Neary for UL Freshers last night, getting himself into the conversation for POTM (though Kirby a clear winner of that).

Had a pretty rough start (a mix up around a mark/free leading to a MTUC goal) so showed great character and composure to play himself into it the way he did. Kicked 3, off left and right, when the game was tight and UL really missing their usual heavy scorers inside and sprayed the ball around well pulling strings for his side.

Really exciting team. Would love to know the thinking behind McMonagle as captain so early in his career? Is it his full debut for Mayo seniors? Can’t recall him starting before. Being a fan of Niall Hurley I hope he gets a few outings this year. Any sign of Ronan Clarke in the setup

On the recruitment consultant selection for the CEO role, I hear the question on why now and why this was decided sooner. From a personal perspective I’ve worked in hiring people for senior level roles and the use of agencies can be quite expensive. Some agencies can seek 20-30% of a salary for a finders fee, sometimes more. If we anticipate a salary of 100,000k plus, then that’s a significant agency fee that will be incurred. So they would not have made the decision lightly. Perhaps they hoped the applicant would come directly but evidently not the case. I’d rather they go down this route with Collins McNicholas than make a rash selection

Mayo off playing a challenge with more established players v Clare and Galway did similar in a recent challenge v Dublin which they apparently lost to a late Con Callaghan goal

Both playing mainly fringe players in the FBD final on Sunday the same will happen to the Connacht Senior championship once that looses all connection to the All-Ireland series.
