County senior camogie team disbanded

County senior camogie team disbanded

RTÉ is reporting this morning (here) that the county will not field a senior camogie team in 2025.

Last year was a tough one for them. That RTÉ report states that the decision comes in the wake of heavy League and Championship defeats last year and Colum O’Meara stepping down as manager. Mayo Camogie PRO Fiona Duffy is quoted as saying that players’ work commitments and travel plans contributed to the lack of sufficient numbers this year.

When the county senior team was revived after a long absence, as the Covid pandemic was beginning to lessen its grip in 2021, it met with initial success. That year they won League promotion and then followed it up with victory in the Nancy Murray Cup. After that initial positive experience, however, the going has been harder in the years since then, with last year in particular proving tough for them.

That RTÉ report confirms that the county will continue to field teams at U16 and Minor levels. We have scored good success in camogie at underage level in recent years, winning the All-Ireland U16D title in 2022 and reaching the All-Ireland Minor C final in both 2021 and 2022. Hopefully continued positive underage performances will, in time, provide the basis for relaunching a county team at senior level once again.

Not great times for our ladies sports teams at the moment unfortunately.

This is a disgrace, plain and simple. No equality in Gaa, and no leadership by Camogie Association or Lgfa. Am I surprised "No". On about bring hurling and camogie into other counties, no chance with this shite.
Amalgamate GAA and LGFA and Camogie board.
Always remember Galway vs Cork Ladies football All-Ireland semi final in 2020 scheduled for Parnell Park, pitch frozen, and re-scheduled the morning of match, and time brought forward. Think galway arrived 20mins before match. The LGFA or Camogie Association, either don't have the expertise or resources to run their respective association.

Pebblesmeller - I had to delete that comment. The person you reference could be identified based on what you've posted. I can't allow you to post allegations of that kind here in light of obvious defamation concerns.

This is a very poor show in 2025 and should not be allowed to happen. I am not interested in any excuses, MAYO has to have a senior camogie team so that the underage girls coming up have a senior team to strive for when they reach the end of underage camogie. This is an urgent situation. It is far easier to keep an existing team going than to set up a team again. Heads needs to be knocked together and get the MAYO senior camogie team undisbanded.

Sadly like I am starting to see at ladies football club level - there are less and less volunteers been asked to do more and more work and these people are getting sick of it.
Of course we all want ladies football and camogie to thrive and expand - but I don't see the volunteers coming forward to drive it on. There are less volunteers now than there was 4 years ago.

@mayotillidie
The reason there is a camogie and Lgfa is because the GAA ignored sport women for over 100 years.
The GAA have done nothing to promote hurling in Mayo for 150 years, what would they do for camogie - Sweet FA

There are only 5 camogie clubs in Mayo - my 80 yr old mother played camogie in school - none of my sisters did

The Hurling Development Committee don't give a monkeys about either hurling or camogie in counties like Mayo.
Mayo County board care less about hurling - its all about the senior football team.

If we really wanted to get serious about camogie (and hurling) there is a template available
1. Have regional clubs - 2 per regional board or per barony
2. Have a designated facility for hurling/camogie in each region- use a pitch from an amalgamated club which doesnt get much use (Kilfian, Carramore, Brikens etc.
3. Amalgamate with Sligo/Leitrim/Roscommon and have better intercounty teams

If you do as you always did, you'll get what you always got. In the case of camogie and hurling in Mayo - very little.

All very valid points Tirawleybaron, but who's going to make the changes you suggested?
People have to volunteer, put themselves forward for nomination and then dedicate whatever spare time they have to it.
Not so easy to find people willing and able to do that I would say.

It's sad to see a country with such a Gaelic Games pedigree as Mayo not fielding a Senior Ladies team.
