Connacht GAA reject Hollymount/Carramore appeal

Connacht GAA reject Hollymount/Carramore appeal

Connacht GAA last night rejected Hollymount/Carramore’s appeal – which Mayo GAA had originally turned down last week – in which the South Mayo club had objected to the result of their Intermediate Championship Round 3 drawn match against neighbours Kilmaine on the basis that, as video evidence confirmed, a first-half score by Kilmaine was incorrectly given as a two-pointer.

A report by MidWest Radio (here) confirms the outcome of last night’s appeal. While the club has now made – and lost – two appeals in relation to the Kilmaine match, the GAA appeals process remains far from exhausted, with the option of an ultimate approach to the Disputes Resolution Authority (DRA) still open to them.

It’s not known if Hollymount/Carramore will decide to continue with their claim or if they’ll opt to fold the tent at this juncture.

In the meantime, Kilmaine’s IFC quarter-final away to Kilmeena is set to go ahead this Saturday with a 3pm throw-in. This fixture is, somewhat oddly, one of the five matches due to be streamed live on Mayo GAA TV this weekend but tickets for the game haven’t yet been made available online for it, the only Championship game this weekend where this is the case.

UPDATE: Tickets are now available online for the Kilmeena/Kilmaine game – the link for that is here.

We had an in-depth chat about the Hollymount/Carramore appeal saga on the podcast earlier this week, which was, of course, recorded before the club’s petition to Connacht GAA was dismissed last night. On the pod we discussed how Hollymount/Carramore were well within their rights to pursue their case but the wisdom of their doing so was also questioned. Those questions become more relevant now in light of last night’s second rebuffal of their claim.

Yes it's a sickner for Holly -Carra but sometimes you're best to take your medicine, roll with the punches and wait for the next game and you get sympathy from other clubs and offiials.
As was said there was still plenty of time to 'win it' for themselves on the day .
It's a miscarriage of justice alright , but in the scheme of things not a huge one.

Agree , tough on Holly/ Carramore but time to move on . Fair play to Kilmaine though, playing well this year . Kilmaine competing with Hollymount would have been laughed at years ago when they were winning Senior Championships .
Obviously doing something right at underage to be producing these fine footballers. Great for a small but proud village .

Time to address the rules and provide clarification.
Either determine that the on field decisions are final or allow for video evidence where available to overturn a result.
The second option discriminates against teams suffering the same problems but not having video evidence.
There will always be a referee so I would be in favour of a system that might not be 100% fool proof but at least everyone is treated equal.
Sorry for Holly but time to move on.

Holly/ Carramore are entitled to take this all the way to Croke Park, although I don't expect they will win that one either. It would set too big a precedent for Croke Park to overturn. While I am not directly involved in either club its too easy to say "take your medicine etc and move on" for all the lads and coaches who have been building for this competition for the past year or so and to be knocked out in this way where it is clear for all to see?.... What example does this give to underage players going forward....play the rule book and not what actually happens on the field of play?..... its a pity that Kilmaine in the interests of sportsmanship didn't offer a replay as good neighbour's straight after the game and it would have left the CCC with an out clause.

Has to be decided on the day, so many objections any team could bring, point ruled wide, free kick/penalty not given ect. Plus in this case they had 3 games to prove they deserved a place in the next round. I feel for them but its time to move on

Perhaps the first semi circle should be a broken line to help avoid confusion.

Only reason the small semi circle is there still is for the penalty, and players have to be outside the small arc. Surely this can be sorted in a simpler way and take out the small arc completely.

It is being said that the holly/ carra management brought the attention of the referee to the disputed two pointers at half time and nothing was done.
If that was the case they certainly have a grievance.

Mayo Man for Life. If every team took your advice and to ask the opposition in the interest of sportsmanship to replay any game because the referee made an incorrect decision we would end all the championship and league 12 months after the games started.. Hollymount are wasting their time . The game is over and time to move on,
Kilmaine are entitled to move on. You Three is right time to move on.

Usual cock-up. No point in going to Croke Park and asking them to set a precedent for fairness. Can't be having that at all at all. Hear no evil, see no ......

Rober.. If that is your view cannot every referee can change all things on the whim of players and management. What the referee has recorded at the time of entry into his notebook cannot be changed. Its grand for everybody to say i said this and that, and brought it to referees attention ,it does not change what he has recorded.

R

Rober says:

True grit, but the problem is that on Saturday the referee acknowledged his mistake and conveyed it to the county board. I am not saying that referees decisions can be over ruled, just stating what I heard happened..I was at the game. No beef either way. But I know that any other club that this happened to would be equally bullish about it.

The root of this problem is the new 2 point arc. I said at the very beginning that it would cause controversy and it is doing so, will continue to do so on a fairly regular basis and wiil undoubtedly do so at the highest level, including All Ireland Finals. If these circumstances continue to happen on a pretty frequent basis, it will be seen as to difficult to officiate and unworkable. I was lukewarm about it's introduction in the first place and would question whether it is really necessary-would the 3 Up in itself not have been enough. In the meantime, for the love of God, get rid of the 2 point free.

I just wonder if this happens the Mayo county team next summer in a big game will so many be as flippant to say “ah sure take your beating” this forum would self combust.

On the podcast the “none awarded Kilmaine 2nd penalty” was mentioned yet again but no mention of the clear obstruction of the solo and go at the very end which should have been brought up for a free in to Holly/Carra…

Fact is Mayo GAA are to blame for removing the 4th official from group games (they will now be present for the knockout stages). A total cock up.

But they hadn't a choice in that, Yew Tree, as they simply didn't have enough match officials to go around. Branding it a cock-up is a bit harsh.

GlasangusDearg is right - the 2-point arc was always going to cause controversy and this was always only ever going to surface in club games, where refs already have their hands full and where mistakes were more readily going to happen. I'd agree that if this (unnecessary) 2-point score is to be maintained, then the D has to go as this is at the root of the confusion.

Ex-pat - would you be happy if your notion of "fairness" resulted in competitions up and down the country getting held up for weeks or months due to appeals and objections over disputed 2-point scores? Because, make no mistake, if this appeal is upheld, that's where we're headed. As I said on the pod the other night, that was the defining feature of the GAA a hundred and more years ago and I'm not sure many of us want to see that kind of carry-on becoming common practice again.

Maybe turn the outer arc into a shaded 1 metre wide zone. Again, I know not so simple at club level ,extra white washing required but anything that helps eliminate this mistake from happening regularly should be looked at.

J

Jr says:

I think Mick Lyons was the cause of the D , I remember he was ahead of a Dublin player as he missed a penalty, no doubt encouraging him.

GlasagusDearg . I’ve said it here before and I agree with you. I think the three up was sufficient without the 2 pointer at all. The 2 point free is a complete joke. I understand it’s to cut down on the amount of frees just outside the arc, but it’s too much of a reward to get two thirds of a goal, for a pull of the jersey. I wonder did they trial the 3 up without the 2 pointer in the sandbox games.

Reading this is a bit farcical but it seems to me anyways, that the fact the referee only mentioned his mistake in an email rather than in the official match report means the result stays the same. A messy situation for both clubs and Kilmeena too. With tickets now on sale, I presume the game will go ahead on Saturday.

I would also love to see the 2 point arc go as it won't be the last time we will see something like this unfortunately.

An arc is impossible to judge from afar and especially from an umpire position if the line is faded - maybe a different colour but I think the best option would be a 35m line straight across so linesman could better judge infringement. This would undoubtedly cause different defensive and attack strategies but worth a try and might even bring new found enjoyment for spectators
