Club Stars Team of the Year – the nominees

As the date for our gala awards event approaches it’s time to unveil the nominees for this year’s Mayo Football Podcast Club Stars with EirGrid Team of the Year. A total of 35 players have been shortlisted for this year’s team.

Westport, who led until injury time in last month’s Moclair Cup decider, lead the way with eleven nominees, while three-in-a-row county champions Ballina Stephenites have ten. Crossmolina Deel Rovers, who lit up this year’s Championship on their return to the Senior ranks, are next on seven. Knockmore have three, while Ballaghaderreen, Ballintubber, Belmullet and Breaffy have one each.

Starting with the goalkeepers, the two nominees are:

Next, it’s the defenders where a total of fourteen players have been nominated. Here is the list of nominees in this category:

At midfield, our list of nominees contains five names. Here they are:

In the forwards a total of fourteen players have been nominated. Here is the list of nominees in this category:

We’ll be launching the 2025 Club Stars awards on Monday, welcoming on board as we do so this year’s charity partners, Mayo Mental Health Association. We’ll also be revealing a number of special awards in the lead-up to the gala event on 13th December, with tickets for the big night set to go on sale soon.

Just skipped through the list and by my count it only contains 8 of last year’s panel. That seems extraordinary to me. I may be wrong with the number but still.

Surprised no nomination for Dylan Thornton.

Can’t believe Kevin Mulhern from Crossmolina didn’t make it. Brilliant defender and organiser of the whole defence and got a goal against both Ballina and Westport from full back. Aaron Coggins a brilliant player but maybe a quieter year than last year, I would have had Mulhern or Sean Og McGuinness ahead of him.

Glad to see Dylan Flynn in there.
Kobe obviously outstanding this year but Dylan fantastic too.
A hugely talented player but also a great leader for someone so young.
Brave and intelligent beyond his years.
Exciting prospect

A really solid short list. Fair play to all involved in the selections.

McBrien probably the big one I'd have fancied that missed out like @Cp, but when making a list short there will always be a few debatable ones when it's all subjective. I'd take this list ahead of the All Star nominations, so huge kudos for that.

Honourable mentions of my own:

I'd have to imagine Darragh Fallon, Adam Byrne, David Dolan and Jamie Lunt would have been in or around the conversations for keepers. All had really solid years.

Michael Plunkett, Bryan Walsh, Daragh Fitzpatrick (probably my bolter of the year - he was outstanding, especially when lads around him were under pressure) and Mulhern already mentioned would all have been pushing hard for defensive spots. John MacMonagle fantastic in the time he managed to get on grass, but with just the two games not really enough to push here (Mark Noonan had an outstanding breakout for a minor, but again lacking in enough minutes to force his way into chats like this). Luke Jordan close to that conversation too, with a few impressive performances for Yousif Coghill (still u20 next year) deserving of a mention.

Hard to see past David McBrien around the middle. He'd have been making my final team too.
Dylan Thornton probably next up there, but probably falling just short of a nomination for me (possibly more to do with Ballina's style of play giving him less opportunities to shine with controlled possession rather than more restarts and transitions - his distribution did look to have moved on a few levels for sure so one of the highlights [along with Evan and Sam] watching Ballina this year). Connell Dempsey worthy of a shout too, some really solid work this year.

Up top Cathal Slattery and Paul Towey probably the next two for myself, both putting in a great year, along with Oisín Deane who had a super year (so often the link man for Cross - I'd love to see his assist stats). A few stand out candidates for the forward roles, all already on the list, so hard to look too far outside for really notable performances.

I felt really bad for Liam Lavin (outstanding in the league and in his brief Championship minutes - an incredible year, player of the year contender stuff when available) and Fionn O'Donoghue. Not near this conversation as both had illness/injury hinder what had been exceptional years up until those happened, but worthy of a mention all the same for the good work they did put in.

Oisín Deane would be unlucky one for me but a great future. Good to see you back TSU, and very informative post, I don't know how you do it but mayo GAA should snap you up as a scout and communicator to Mayo faithful fan base

I think you are spot on as usual TsuDhoNim. Fionn O'Donoghue is a great prospect and all those that you mentioned played well from what I saw myself.

Oisìn Deane is probably the best 11 that Mayo have produced for years. I wouldn't be surprised if he was brought into the senior set up this year. Only 18 I know, but looked well capable all year of making that step up. Makes all those players around him look good, while still chipping in with scores himself. Could become our own version of Paudi Clifford and very similar in stature.

Can't really argue with that selection. Cream of the crop there maybe bar Thornton and Mc Brien. Great selection otherwise.

WERE 2025 County panelists allowed to be selected for these awards, ( not sure as I see a few of them listed) if they were then our county panel this year was badly out of touch with talent in the County.

A good list of players but surprised that McBrien, Drake, Oisin Deane, Leddy Mulhern, Ray Walsh, Colm Moran, Liam Irwin, Oisin Tunney, O'Donoghue not get into a nomination. I would have all had these lads name in the hat.

Evan Regan has to win FOTY and Young Footballer has to go to Kobe

Midfield list tell you a lot about the no of ball.winning midfielders in the county. No count midfielder names as club allstar

Disapointed to not see the inclusion of a few youthful players. especially young moriarty and coleman. They really were a joy to watch.
