Club results round-up

After two dramatic county semi-finals today at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, it’s set to be a North Mayo Moclair Cup decider in two weeks time.

Both SFC semi-finals this afternoon went to extra-time and the result in both could easily have gone the other way. When the dust settled, however, defending champions Ballina Stephenites and 2020/1 back-to-back winners Knockmore were the two teams left standing. When they come face-to-face in a fortnight it will be their first county final meeting in twenty years.

It was a day of high drama in Castlebar today. There was nothing between Knockmore and Breaffy in normal time, with the North Mayo lads only grabbing the lead for the first time with ten minutes to go in a contest where Breaffy had made more of the running up until then.

In a tense finale in normal time, Aidan O’Shea grabbed a leveller, sending this tie – like the afternoon’s opening one -into extra-time.

Two up and a man up early in the second period of extra-time, it looked like Breaffy’s to lose. Which they did, conceding two goals in a crazy final period of extra-time where cards were flying, with both teams seeing players walk before the finish. Knockmore won’t care, however, as they prevailed by 2-15 to 0-18 at the end of extra-time.

In the day’s first SFC semi-final, meanwhile, Ballina Stephenites were made to battle all the way to the end of extra-time by Ballaghaderreen before finally emerging as three-point winners. The Stephenites prevailed in that one at the finish by 1-18 to 2-12.

This year’s Junior final will also be an all-North Mayo affair, between Cill Chomáin and Bonniconlon. Cill Chomáin had their hands full for long stretches today against a determined Swinford outfit but they emerged at the end the winners at Crossmolina by 1-10 to 0-11.

Earlier in the afternoon, Bonniconlon continued their quest to bounce straight back up to Intermediate when they ended Eastern Gaels’ great run in this competition. Bonniconlon won that one at Parke by 0-16 to 0-11.

Whoever claims the Pete McDonnell Cup this year will be taking Kiltimagh’s place at Intermediate level. They were beaten today by Islandeady in the IFC relegation final and so will operate at Junior next year. The final score in that game at Cong was 1-15 to 0-12.

We’ll have a Mayo Football Podcast show up on Patreon a bit later on this evening reviewing all the day’s club action.

Will also be interesting to see if ruttledge will get his red card overturned.umpires seemed sure and helps to have a referee as umpire aswell.would be a huge loss for Knockmore

I attended all four semi-finals and each game was very exciting with result in doubt until the final whistle. I don't think kevin Mcstay will have unearthed any gem for the Mayo senior team. Mayo is going through a lull at the moment in producing exceptional Gaelic footballers and that happens and it is nobodys fault.

Wasn't it great to be at a double-header in October - in McHale Park, the coldest place on earth - without needing the jacket?!

I just knew Ballaghaderreen would give Ballina a game and a half today, they have been my dark horse all year. They just ran out of legs in the end and Ballina's bench made a big impact. Ballagh' can be very proud of the season they've had and their performance today too but I'm sure that will be little consolation tonight.

As for the other game, again I really felt before today that Knockmore would be well up for it given all the talk about Breaffy, who you'd have to think must have had one eye on the final. I thought Breaffy's game management was desperately poor. When they needed to keep their heads, they lost them. When Aidan needed to be inside in ET, he was outside kicking frees. Unfathomable stuff. Fair play to Knockmore, they ground it out but it wasn't a classic for the ages - not that they'll be concerned about that! It will be a very long winter in Breaffy.

Another North Mayo derby - there will surely be skin and hair flying in Castlebar this day two weeks ;-)

Every year there is a talk about breaffy...every year they fail to perfom! It almost reminds me of mayo. On the big day their big players fail to preform. There is no what should have been like Mayo they were beaten and failed to capitalise. It is like watching Mayo

@jimbo, maybe i’m being overly optimistic but i don’t think mayo are going through a lull. I think all it takes is a little bit more bottle. There was no match (bar the tyrone Allianz league match and the fbd match) where we were well beaten. We are in a similar position as armagh. So i would say we are actually in a better position to win an all ireland than in previous years. I think it’s been a good competitive club championship and that will only benefit mayo. If we can get past the mental hurdle of the previous agonising final defeats we would be a very strong contender. But of course that is a massive if. I am hopeful as always.

@plunlett. We have lots of great players but no exceptional player imo. that really excites me. e.g.. Keegan, higgins, andy, mcdonald or Mortimer.

Agreed PK, not sure why all the bouquets for Breaffy, they got beaten yesterday by a Knockmore team absolutely decimated by injuries to a lot of key players. There comes a time where you must Sh1t or get off the pot. In some ways Breaffy are a lot like the county team.

Ed a great contributor on the pod but when have to disagree with his analysis of breaffy being 6 points a better team, a total counterfactual

Is o'hora likely to be back for final? Could come down to the walking wounded with both teams looking like missing bodies through injury, suspension. You would think that Ballina should have the upper hand with quality at this stage, but I am loathe to ever back against Knockmore again as they are indefatigable

Some people singing the praises of Sam Callinan:
What did his marker score?

Eds Breaffy bias is blinkering his vision I think! Breaffy will rue the three blocked goal efforts though, had even one of those efforts gone in it would probably have swung it for them. Rutledge shouldn't get his card overturned because it was fully deserved and a cowardly act. In truth his namesake should have gone on the first throw in too when he blindsided Minogue with a punch as the ball was thrown in.
Breaffy will have many sleepless nights about this one though. They left Knockmore hanging around in the game when they should have had enough distance between them on the scoreboard to end it in normal time. Some sloppy frees along the left hand side of Breaffys defense gave Orme 3 or 4 scores from frees and missing those goal efforts (albeit some brilliant blocking) all meant that Knockmore were not put away. They never gave in, kept plugging away and once the 1st Breaffy red card evened up the numbers on the pitch, Knockmore took over and never looked back. They finished the game really impressively and their "know-how" in winning games and controlling the ball was impressive.

Ballina were put to the pin of their collar but when they needed to find another gear, they did. I thought Callinan got stronger throughout the game and Murrays fetch and point towards the end of the game was brilliant. Ballagh had no answer for Treacys speed and movement, and his link up play was incisive. The one thing that boiled my piss though was O'Hora. He was out on the pitch and along the sideline all game and the sideline official didn't do a thing about it. O'Hora should not have been anywhere near the sideline, he's not on the management team and he should have been seated with the rest of the subs. It's a small thing but the sideline official should have put him in his place.

On yesterdays games (great value for €20) the football was light years ahead of last years semi-finals. Plenty of scores, quick movement of the ball up the field and both games were very close. No real stand-outs in terms of new players for McStay for the coming season though. As last year, he knows who he has and he knows who isn't good enough. I felt McBrien and Ruane should have dominated in their games more than they did however.

Ballina look the more complete side over Knockmore, and certainly they have more pace and cutting in attack. Knockmore however have the muscle memory of big wins and a dogged spirit that counts for a huge amount going into finals. Both teams will be looking to their physios to work their magic as both sides were missing big players yesterday. At the minute, I feel if ballina get their injured players back in good shape for the final they will just have a little too much for Knockmore. If it's anyway close though, Knockmore will take them.

It's a hard game to Ref pebblesmeller, Neary should have seen line for the head hit on Orme and was it the Breaffy no.2 that went in with knees on man on ground as well could have been red also?

In fairness to the sidelines man he put O'Hora outside the pitch in first half. But he was standing along the fence looing, roaring and banging the hoardings then. Was more peace when he was inside the fence. :)

Pebble, Murray wasn't playing for Ballina, it was Frank Irwin that did that work in midfield towards the end. He should be a shoe-in for the County MidField now.

Big shake up now needed for the county team, same old story with some of the older inter county players that are hanging around too long now, they play with a similar type pattern at club level.

The few matches I was at where key decisions at key times were to be made by inter county players was laughable to say the least.

Hopefully McStay and his selectors can see what I'm seeing at this stage and bench or encourage retirement from some of these lads at this stage and get in some animal players with a killer instinct that are definitely within the county.

We need to roll the dice now and shake things up at county level.

highorlow - Ruari Morrin I think he meant? If not, Morrin was as impressive as I've seen him when he came on, same goes for Ciaran Treacy. Conditioning and the bench won it for Ballina I think but the Knockmore game tells a similar tale. What a final to look forward to.
