Club championship Sunday

The curtain came down on the second round of the Mayo senior and intermediate club championships on Sunday.

Breaffy racked up their second win of the campaign away to Belmullet and Ballintubber got the better of Mayo Gaels. Rob and Nigel were in Tallagh and caught up with Jack Livingstone, Aidan O’Shea and Seán Deane afterwards.

Meanwhile, Mike was in Clogher and got the reaction of Cillian O’Connor after Ballintubber’s game.

Rob and Nigel were also in Bangor to see Kiltane beat Hollymount-Carramore in the Intermediate championship, and to hear from Darragh Carey afterwards.

Mike also rounds up the rest of the day’s scorelines from around the county.

Is there stand out names yet good enough for county showing in the first two championship games

@tedtoal there is an abundance of talent coming through in Mayo.

Some that have impressed last few weeks Niall Hurley Claremorris also Gilmore..Liam Donoghue of Kiltane.
Then Diarmuid and Niall Coggins Maheady and Moyles from Crossmolina.Finbar McLoughlin Westport. Lavelle Belmullet.
Coghill from Breaffy.but there’s loads more could easily add another 20 and a lot will be with under 20s also

I think what should expect next season is people that were in extended panel to start pushing hard for places.mcmonagle, Lydon , lynch, Howard, o loughlin etc

There will also likely be up to 10 who could realistically depart the panel for different reasons but it’s exciting times for Mayo football

Definitely agree Aidan
There will probably be a good number of players leaving panel come winter and I think that’s a good thing.
The right time for some to move on and there is a wealth of hungry players to push on now inspired by this summer.
Suppose the most obvious position needing filling is the forward line with Kobe gone and possibly more moving away from that area.
Hurley putting himself in contention there.and Maheady continues his good form from last year.
Exciting times definitely

John Gallagher kicking 10 points 7 from play v ballintubber is some going too. Lots of high scoring forwards so far in this championship

Howard going in the right direction and I was very impressed with Barrett in the corner forwards for Belmullet.

@Tedtoal: Totally agree with a fair few of the names mentioned already. They'll certainly be there or there abouts on any of the shortlists management will be looking at.

Throwing a few out there...

- Luke Jordan: Hard to shine in a team not hitting top form, but Luke putting in big shifts for Ballina. Height, pace, athleticism & power. He'll push close.

- Nathan Armstrong: One who'd have been on plenty of potential panel lists in recent years & likely no different this year. Again, similar to Jordan, gives us something a little different in terms of profile at the back. Possibly 1 of the 2 makes it rather than both.

- Eoghan McLaughlin: Not a great day at the office against Claremorris, but I'd expect that to only drive him on in R3. Seems to have lost none of the drive or aggression that had him in POTY form last year from his other games this year. Physical, aggressive, abrasive & pace to burn. Can be a 1 man press at times so his strengths play right into a lot of what we looked to do. Injuries permitting I'd expect a quick return.

- James Lavelle: Possibly a year too soon for Jimmy just yet (though I'd have possibly said the same of McGreal last year), but with the pace & qualities he offers one you'd probably risk bringing in early to ensure he's going in the right path for S&C and show there's a clear pathway there in time.

- Diarmuid Coggins: You'd make a case for looking at the running power of all 3 of the brothers, but Diarmuid's form this year 2nd to none & one I'd be very surprised not to see make the shake up for FBD minutes.

- Finbar McLaughlin: Similar kind of profile to Diarmuid Coggins & likely be battling for minutes with someone like his teammate Conal Dawson. Pace, athleticism, high work rate and a real eye for a score (especially from distance).

- Niall Hurley: Red hot form this year. Was unlucky to fall just short of the panel last year & seems to have reacted to that setback perfectly, putting the head down & working even harder. I had fears he might suffer missing Beirne beside him to allow a little more of his playmaking, but he's just pushing to another level regardless.

Interesting to see how we might change how we handle lads playing Sigerson next year based on the comments made this year. Niall will be one of the interesting ones to watch for that.

A bit further down the list (for now) than the ones mentioned but Niall Treacy, Niall Coggins, Tom Clarke, Joey Holmes, Owen Doherty, Liam Donoghue, Colm Reape, Luke Jennings, Ronan Clarke, Cathal Keaveney & a few more of the big lads around the middle (a cluster that'll hope to be in that conversation but none clearly standing out from the pack just yet) that'll be still hoping to turn some heads.

Probably 3 or 4 more of the 20s that'll hope to get some senior minutes this year too, which is always a nice place to be.

Some great games this year in the club championship in comparison to last year. A lot of talent out there.
Niall Hurley is just unmarkable at the moment. Diarmuid Coggins is flying too. Looking at the Mayo squad it needs some midfielders who can win primary possession. Bob tuohy will improve and Seamus Howard might step up. Just making the panel next year will be ultra competitive

All doom and gloom last year and talking of poor club championship.

TSU looks like we may need a bigger bingo bus if all those lads make it on to the panel.

Niall Hurley is fairly strong for his size just by the eye test?

@Deja Vu: Haha, I'd imagine plenty of fans that'd offer them lifts if needed!

It'll be interesting to see how the panel numbers/trial runs/early season FBD minutes will pan out next year.

This year it was an extended panel of ~60 (some just in on short trials) that worked through the early year and played the challenges/dev challenge games. Possible we go with a tighter pool for the coming year, no longer a new management team so might not cast quite so wide a net, but I wouldn't be shocked to see similar kinds of numbers again and a good look taken at anyone putting a hand up and showing the kinds of attributes the management are looking for.

In '26 52 lads togged including FBD/League/Champ, 49 of those played minutes including FBD/League/Champ, 39 togged League/Champ & 37 played League/Champ mins.

Quite a few of those that were involved early but didn't feature in the final League/Championship Panels among those being mentioned above. Of the names I mentioned I think (open to correction) it'd only be 3 of the lads who wouldn't have been involved with an early season panel in the last 2 years, though I'd suggest that's more we're doing a good job of bringing in 19s-21s earlier than most rather than any kind of worrying lack of 'new' talent.

Tony Carey has caught the eye for Ardagh. I would say he could be on for a breakout year for the u20s next year.

TSU and others - great information there to whet our appetites re '27.

However, if you think of Daragh, Kobe and Eoin M in '26, these were left field choices; so young it seemed outrageous to go with them. For '27, maybe Andy & co. will be looking at younger blood, so the u21 championship could be the one to throw up a bolter.

Many were predicting this time last year that Sean Morahan, John McMonagle, and Conal Dawson would nail down places; it didn't happen. Andy was name checking Eoin McGreal from a very early stage, and continued even when he was injured - I don't think he was mentioned much by posters, though TSU of course would have had him covered!

And, once players start to gel and really commit to a plan, the ones you don't expect can do a really good job, exactly what the management want them to do. We here only know a fraction of what goes on behind the scenes. But speculating like we do is what makes the blog unmissable, for me anyway!

What about the hession lad from eastern gaels was a very decent full back two years ago for mayo minors

There was a Hessian lad from Kiltimagh (I think) who was a real talent at minor that I had said would be a real good one.
Strong and abrasive.reminded me of Conor Diskin as a minor.
He was also a really good free taker. Wasn't it Flanagan from Eastern Gaels that was/is a real prospect too.
We'll have to get Tsu on those cases too. 😉

@Tedtoal: Tom Hession scored a goal (1 of 6) for Eastern Gaels at the weekend, but I'd expect he'll have tougher games than that one to test himself defensively. Swinford never seemed to really raise the challenge to them.

Has had a rough time with injuries, and was unfortunate not to make the 20s last year (himself & Joe Forry two relatively late cuts that would have been very close - though the panel was always going to be crazy competitive last year & I'd expect no less so this coming year).

@2 hops: As you predicted, Dara Flanagan the one that really shone in that game. Top scored with 1-0-5 or so and pulling all the strings by all accounts. Looked a serious prospect at wingback in his early days of county underage and looks even more promising when further forward at 11.

Conor Hession (Kiltimagh) still looking sharp as ever. Added 0-2-3 this week to add to his 5 points in R1. Serious numbers for a lad that young in a side battling to try & secure safety in Intermediate this year.

All 3 I'd expect to see as part of the 20s panel next year, but the list of 'possibles' there would be +50 without any obvious weak links. And always hard to predict who might pop off yet between what's left of adult, 21s & early PPS next year to move from a 'possible' to a 'must have' for Keith & the management there.

@Catcol: An exciting thought I'll keep the fingers crossed for.

A quick glance at the younger players that are shining at adult already would make you fairly happy. 5 of the top 10 scorers from play in the Senior Championship are u22s that weren't in last years All Ireland winning panel (though possibly part of why they're going so well with ever so slightly less celebrating being required in recent weeks). Haven't gotten around to doing the R2 stuff for Intermediate yet, but it would have been 5 of the top 20 scorers from R1 in the same position there too.

Then you'd potentially be looking at options for the u20s already playing fairly significant adult minutes like:

C Coghill, Langan, McGuinness, McKee, Tighe, Donnelly
Moyles, D Hurley, J O'Malley, Ivers, Roddy, Noonan, B Walsh, T Hession
Kelly, May, Quinn, Buckley
Flynn, Deane, Jordan, Flanagan, C O'Malley, Moriarty, Sheerin
B Holmes, C Hession, T Carey, O'Donoghue, Carr, E Walsh

So not a bad place to be (a fair few of those still underage the following year too), and plenty of room for 3 or 4 of those to potentially push in for some FBD or early league minutes yet.

Thanks a million Tsu for another comprehensive round up of where these lads are at.
We really appear to be in a good place, the conveyer belt is churning them out.
