Kiltane, Kiltane - so good they named it twice!

Thanks for heading off that potential diplomatic incident, No Doubt - I've corrected that howler now.

Jj don't think so, say they regret not joining northern Gaels.

It's a pity they voted against allowing at least the B team winners in to it to add to competitiveness of it. As more of the smaller clubs die away with rural depopulation it's weaker the competition will be for it.

Rule tweaks proposed for Championship.

- 3/3 swapped to 4back/3up with keepers included as part of the 4 (so a teammate has to drop back for them to go forward, keeps it 11v11)
- Much looser enforcement of the 4/3 if a player doesn't interfere with play
- Red/black cards now (correctly) punishing the 11 in attack/defence rather than the 3 or 4 out of play
- Kick-out mark now has an instant play-on where you can't be tackled for 4m with a 50m penalty on breaches (this one will cause a backlash when it's first punished)

CPAMG says:

Like the first 3 amendments. Bit of common sense. Still allows for the keepers to get involved but hopefully incentivies teams to push out and put a press on. Last one puts a premium on high quality fielders who now won't be swarmed when they land. I know a big buck from Breaffy who will love that!

@Gizmobobs you hit the nail on the head there. Not at least allowing the Junior A B-Team champions enter the competition was a terrible decision.

The biggest opposition opinion to doing so was the fact that the weaker junior clubs didn't want to end up on the receiving end of a hiding from a Westport B or a Knockmore B - What a joke.

If you're going to get a hammering from a senior club's B team, you are more than likely going to get hammered by a majority of the Junior championship too. The backwards thinking of those clubs who opposed the expansion has lead to a situation where we only have 13 teams in our 3rd tier championship and the format is all over the place.

Galway have a novel format to address the B team issue - B teams play in their own championship, but the B team winner plays against the first team junior winners in a final to see who gets promoted to intermediate. Maybe we should look into something similar?

G

Gizmobobs says:

March 7, 2025 at 7:55 am

On the Fence, I think Westport put in a motion similar to that and it was voted down.
Some of the hidings dished out by junior teams to other junior teams since this model was introduced have been atrocious, with actual scores not been put in as a result.
Current system is doing nothing to save the smaller clubs and nothing to encourage club players with larger playing numbers clubs with B/C teams players to bother sticking around.
If the Junior B competition was running along side the senior championship group stage and the other junior competition delayed a few weeks, genuine senior team players would be cup tied with the seniors by time you start the combined junior championship.

The kickout mark will be very hard to police. For example how do opposition team know if the player will drop the ball on landing as in do they stand back and let him run or close in ready for breaking ball etc. I expect nightmares

W

Where the Sun Sets says:

As with the Allianz League at county level where the new rules have created a very level playing field and still at this late stage relegation positions are not definite, the likely hood is that the club championship will go the same way where any team can beat any other on a given day.
For what it’s worth at this early stage, I’ll go with a North Mayo pairing of Crossmolina v Knockmore for the senior championship final and the Deel Rovers too shade it. I think relegation battles will be very interesting this year with a lot going down to the wire.

Mayo Man for life says:

On the senior club championship, hard to see much further than the usual suspects in the last 4 ...out of Ballina, Knockmore, Westport & Mitchels, with Ballaghadereen possibly trying to build on last season if they can get out of their tough group 3...from the remainder there will be one or two more challengers I'm sure but the new rules are the unknown and could be a great success or possibility an unmitigated disaster with continuous disputes on and off the pitch

O

Ontheditch says:

March 7, 2025 at 12:29 pm

I'd be concerned too about the kickoutmark rule too. How do players give the 4m clearance quickly enough to the fielder.

2

2 hops says:

March 7, 2025 at 12:36 pm

That one will be so hard to police Ontheditch...am I wrong in thinking we had already a 'mark' for a clean fetch from kickouts?? Does this just mean you no longer have to find a finger to stick up in the air as you make the catch?

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 7, 2025 at 12:58 pm

@2 hops: The arm in the air was to signal taking a marked free (still the case). You always had the option to play on immediately and had the protection of 4 steps/time to take 4, so the only change there being a slight tweak to 4m distance rather than steps (which in reality will be judged by the same rule of thumb by refs).

All this really does is fix the old wording where it specified "Penalty - Free kick from where the illegal challenge is made" to now bake in the 50m delay penalty (which should have been applied in all of these cases anyway).

Tidying up of wording/conflict in the rule-book rather than a change in mechanics from R1 there.

With the 4 back rule the advantage has gone away from the likes of Armagh and Tyrone.
Galway now look best placed but if I was Joyce I would rest Walsh until the Connaught final.
I may be more difficult to get shots away with an equal number of backs and forwards.

Some improvement with the proposals and the big one at least being addressed of the 12v11 going so in general am good with the updates. Assume these are now in for the Derry game and everything going forward ?

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 7, 2025 at 4:34 pm

@Thedarkyfinn: Possibly.

They have the detailed next steps outlined in the report there, sadly it's a bit messier than it needs to be (they're going for unrequired votes for some odd reason - spread the responsibility or gain a clear mandate of support I guess).

Assuming it gets through the votes (you'd expect they will - and one of which has been moved forward to the 10th of March to speed up the adoption) it'd be put in place for all R6 games (ours v Derry) and beyond. That's something causing plenty of frustration for some teams that might be depending on score difference for survival/promotion. Could be some pushback there yet.

F

FrostTHammer says:

March 7, 2025 at 5:10 pm

I think the 4v3 is better.
At the start James Horan and the guys were saying that they expected teams would naturally try to keep more than 3 guys up top, but that never really materialized because the opposition would have a potential 12 v 10.

J

Jr says:

March 7, 2025 at 5:20 pm

A scenario:
Corner back takes the kick out and goalie goes forward, ball can now be hand passed back to the corner back without penalty.

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 7, 2025 at 5:44 pm

@Jr: The kicker (corner back in this case) couldn't receive it directly from the player who received the restart (2.7(c)), and the keeper couldn't go forward until after the kick was taken (2.7(a)). If they're not taking it themselves, a keeper has to be in the small square as it's kicked.

"2.7 (a) When the ball is played over the end-line by the Team attacking that end,or after a score is made, play is restarted by a kick-out off the ground from the center point of the 20m line and shall be kicked forward.
If the goalkeeper is not taking the kick-out,the goalkeeper shall stay in the small rectangle.
The player taking the kick-out may play the ball more than once before any other player touches it but may not take the ball into the hands.
Other players may remain inside the 20 m line and the 40m Arc but shall be at least 13m from the ball until it is kicked. Players may not impede or interfere with the goalkeeper,or another opposition player, taking the kick-out.
The ball shall travel outside the 40m Arc before being played by another player of the defending team.
(b) The Player taking the kick-out after the ball goes wide or a score shall have the option of using a standard tee as approved by Central Council.
(c) A player in direct receipt of their kick-out may not pass the ball to their team’s goalkeeper, or the player taking the kick-out, without another player playing the ball."

BatetheBlanket says:

The ball can be passed once only in the small square, ie corner back fields a high ball, he can pass to the goalkeeper if the goalkeeper is within the small square, no player can pass the ball to the goalkeeper otherwise when inside the hallway line.
The goalkeeper can also palm down a high ball to one of his own players, this is not seen as a pass.

The new Rules are going to be difficult for Referees and club players, particularly where a pitch is not marked put properly, arc etc.

B

BatetheBlanket says:

March 7, 2025 at 6:51 pm

Also, another player that is not the goalkeeper can take a kickout but the goalkeeper must stay within the small square.

M

Mikey says:

Not sure I agree with the 4 back. Favours the defensive team so less attacking opportunities so disappointed with that call, why bring a goalie up now? I like most of the current rules but let's see how this plays out.

N

No doubt says:

March 7, 2025 at 9:33 pm

Is it 4v4 in each half or 4v3(the goalie making 4).i presume it's 4v3 otherwise a player will be free unless marked by the goalie.

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 7, 2025 at 9:47 pm

@No doubt: It's 4 back & 3 up at all times, now even with red/black cards in play, but unlike the old 3/3 it's not limited to outfield players & the keeper counts as one of the 4 defenders (or 1 of the 11 attackers).

Just means you can't have that 12th attacker free to overload the defence/play slow possession keep ball for control, but the keeper can still join in with attacks as long as someone else drops back.

I would hope you can now choose to defend man to man but you counter into three men and a sweeper, or zonally facing an extra man but you're man on man on the counter.

Teams will continue to push their keepers up, if their keepers have skills that can punish the opposition. Colm Reape is as confident shooting for scores as any of our defenders. A returning Paddy and Stephen "2-Point" Coen aside.

J

Jr says:

March 7, 2025 at 11:17 pm

I am surprised that you just can't place the ball on the ground instead of giving it to an appointment that can tap and go.
In Aussie Rules yoe leave it on the ground and retreat.

M

Mayo Mayo says:

March 8, 2025 at 7:43 am

"The player taking the kick-out may play the ball more than once before any other player touches it but may not take the ball into the hands" Any idea what this means? Keeper can run the ball out on the ground?

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 8, 2025 at 7:50 am

@Mayo Mayo: Yup. You can go on a mazey dribble with it, if you're brave enough.

Not one of the new rules mind, that one has been in there for a while. Just very rarely used (though has more merit with the 40m arc).

Was used in one of the early season challenge games & worked pretty well due to the confusion among opposition. If nobody uses it in a high profile game could be a very interesting one to play with at club (though I'd double check with a ref before the game starts their familiarity with that nuance just to be safe).

M

Mayo Mayo says:

March 8, 2025 at 8:31 am

Thanks! V interesting one! Will keep it in the back pocket!

No team has used the leaving a forward in behind the keeper for kickouts. Pre trial interpro games there was a lot of talk about it but it hasn't materialised (yet)

B

BatetheBlanket says:

March 8, 2025 at 10:45 am

Mayo Mayo, you may be correct, this is in the new Rules, the goalkeeper can actually dribble the ball along the ground but once the ball is in play he can be challenged by the opposition player. I am not sure if the ball has travel the full 13metres after his first kick but I don't believe this is in the rules.

T

TsuDhoNim says:

March 8, 2025 at 11:41 am

@BatetheBlanket: No restrictions on kick distance like that. As long as players (on either side) aren't within 13m of the kick, a defender receiving the ball is outside the 40m arc & the 20m line when they gain possession & the initial touch nudges the ball forward, the keeper can do what they like as long as they don't use their hands.

No 'may' involved. Tyrone had it happen in a game. Carlow successfully used it in another early this year. It's been a part of the rules since before 1915 (https://www.gaa.ie/api/pdfs/image/upload/hv2kb7oubnsziommkdys.pdf), just didn't have much use so tended to be forgotten. You'd imagine we'll see a bit more now with so many players setting up outside the 40m arc, dragging one or two into that free space should open up more room outside if a side back their keeper to thread the needle with a pass with a player bearing down on them.

F

FrostTHammer says:

March 8, 2025 at 1:09 pm

Anything to be said for a Solo and Go from a kickout? (Has to be the keeper taking it before the ball is placed on the ground)

Feels like team's are finding it difficult to get out of their own half with the new rules. It's high risk, and will lead to excitement imo.

B

BatetheBlanket says:

March 8, 2025 at 4:15 pm

I don't think so at Frosthammer.
The new Rules be a learning curve, ie learn quickly and the team will win.
What I mean BT learn simply means the players really have to abide by the new Rules, the referees will also have to implement the rules.
Serious penalties now where a player questions a referee on a decision, throws the ball on the ground or at an opponent when free awarded against them, goalkeeper being too slow and messing with the kickout, obstructing an opponent, tackling an opponent where the opponent has been awarded a hop and go, that Serious penalty means play is advanced by 50 metres, a handy tap over free from the 13 metre line, and in some instances the option to go out and try for the 2 pointer when the 50 metre advancement goes past the arc.
