Checking in a month after Sam

The month that has now passed since Mayo’s historic All-Ireland title success has been a whirlwind of activity.  In this show, which is a free episode available on all podcast platforms, Rob, Mike and John reflect on what’s been a hectic few weeks for everyone.

The lads chat about all of podcast content on MFT over the past month, which has included interviews with the likes of Andy Moran, Colm Boyle, James Carr, Tommy Conroy, Darren McHale and Jack Carney, as well chats with US sports journalist Dave McKenna and Cahair O’Kane of the Irish News, while our club championship coverage has got back up and running too.

John talks about his forthcoming book, Keeping the Faith, which is being published by Mayo Books Press and is available to pre-order now. The book is an account of John’s many years as a Mayo supporter, interweaved with the story of the development of the Mayo GAA Blog and, more recently, MFT, while, on the field, Andy Moran’s Mayo were on the march to capturing Sam.

The lads also reflect on what has changed for Mayo people everywhere in the wake of the All-Ireland win and how we’ll all think about football and the place we come from in a different way from here on.

This free episode is now available to listen to on all podcast platforms. You can listen to it here on SoundCloud using the player below.

Gabriel Bannigan has stepped down as Monaghan manager...could we see him joining our backroom teams perhaps ??

Very unlikely.why would we take Bannigan? We have enough working within Mayo if we needed to add anyone to a backroom team

What a wonderful feeling to be All Ireland champions. Lots of homes have difficult stuff going on in their lives but what a great lift this has given us . I was always very proud to be from Mayo but the chest is fully out now !

J

John Gunnigan says:

It sure is wonderful, My Ball. And it's the gift that keeps on giving as well. I was reading a piece about Gabriel Bannigan leaving the Monaghan job and my heart gave a little leap as I read how "his coaching ticket in Year 1 included Andy Moran, who went on to manage Mayo to All-Ireland glory this season" and "they had eventual champions Mayo on the ropes" in our championship meeting. As others have noted, this All-Ireland win is ours forever, it can never be taken away from us.

@james Fleming..need to buy a ticket online. They say won't accept cash at gate..not sure if that's fully enforced

John - what a day that was in Clones. Kicking 2 pointers for fun in the first half. After the disappointment of Roscommon game the mayo team getting a standing ovation at half time from the 1500 or so mayo supporters who travelled. Kobes fetch at the end to save us. It was the start of a new era that day.

I see just outside of Ballyhappiness the silage bales are painted with our Captain's famous lines. If anyone's local, it'd be great to get a pic.

I'm not based in the county, Liam, so I'm kinda in the same boat at yourself regarding were Sam might be heading next. Still haven't touched the holy relic on sacred ground either!

Same as that John, I haven't touched the Sam maguire since Mayo captured it or got close to it.

Was inches from it in Dublin around 2016 but didn't feel the need to put my hand on it back then.
There must be a few replicas of the real one otherwise it would get battered.

Lads, just keep checking Mayo on Facebook, my wife & I got to see & touch the Sam Maguire Cup last Saturday at Davitts GAA & LGFA pitch & Centre, it was a fantastic occasion, Davitts organised it perfectly. Lovely Day. Just check for Mayo team on Facebook.

Pepsi.
Was in Mayo weekend before last and was told there’s at least four replicas of Sam in the county. Otherwise it’s impossible to get around all the schools and clubs. The real one doesn’t leave Croke Park.

On Friday next the 4th Sam is visiting St. Attracta’s National school in Charlestown and I believe other local schools though they are asking parents, friends and fans to stay away.
That evening it will be at Fr. O’Hara park Charlestown so maybe next week is for East Mayo.

Might be a controversial theory but for Mayo’s prospects next year is it better that our club championship winners are knocked out of Connacht as quickly as possible? Would argue there is a strong body of evidence now that any intercounty player playing club football deep into winter and especially through to February for All Ireland finals is almost a busted flush come the following summer. You can list about 6 players from Kerry alone that were pale shadows of their best in July after a long winter playing club football. Tom O’Sullivan, O’Beaglaioch, the Geaneys, to name but a few.

St Bridget’s success has arguably been detrimental to the Roscommon senior football team too - certainly there has been no positive impact of the clubs success in recent years on their senior football team in summer.
I think it’s been a blessing in disguise for the county senior team that Mayo clubs have been poor in recent years outside the county.
Since the split season came in the evidence is starting to really mount that long winter club campaigns are really not in the best interests of players involved when it comes to the following summers intercounty season. I’ve heard several intercounty players privately admit this too over the last couple of years. There is no off season or no break for these players and they are eventually stale and flat - you just cant stay in peak form as a footballer 365 days a year, which is what’s required for club and county success in the current calendar.

I think there's more than a grain of truth in that Genfitt 96... Galway were pretty poor during Corofin's golden period but the deeper the strength on you're bench, the less you suffer the consequences.
There have been some exceptions too, remember Boyler himself getting back into the Mayo senior team on the strength of Davitts strong intermediate run in 2011/ '12 and never looking back or Jack Carney likewise after Kilmeena claiming national honours.
I thought we pushed Jordan back in a couple of league games too soon after their long season a few years ago and he had a dip in form for a period. So player management plays a big part in it, similar to how we manage u-20 and Sigerson players.

J

JoeG says:

Club championships can and should be wrapped up much earlier than they are at present. I agree with the above comments and would rather see Mayo clubs going hell for leather trying to win titles than hoping they fail early on.

M

MMMaroonedInThePale says:

August 29, 2026 at 7:47 pm

Agree with comments above highlighting the negative impact of long club campaigns on inter-county players. Perhaps consideration ought to be given to not bringing club competition beyond county finals. This could also provide the opportunity to restore the all-Ireland intercounty season to a more meaningful duration.
The present setup sees most counties finished by June.

Westport minors beat Mitchells in the A final 8.23-1.07
Must be some team in all honesty.

@joe g. Attended the Westport Castlebar match this evening. Think we'd 7 2 pointers in the 1st half. Men against boy's. Even lining up Westport looked a physically bigger team. Presuming a lot of 1st year minors on the Castlebar team and 2nd year minors on the Westport team. The 3 county lads in the front 6 stood out plus a few more. Some great scores kicked. 1st 4? attacks of the 2nd half we'd 3 more goals. Had to hit the road then. Left it tohead east at 7.20 to 1.02 6 or 7 minutes in to the 2nd half. Just home

E

That scoreline is savage - was there any stream done for the match? Having a look around in usual places and can't see anything.

T

TsuDhoNim says:

August 30, 2026 at 12:29 pm

@Exile: No, there's seldom (never that I'm aware of) an official or paid stream for the minor finals. Last year Crossmolina did release their final win on their YouTube channel after the fact, but that'd be the exception rather than the rule.

@Paddyjoejohntom: No. Connacht stick with an u17 competition as their main focus rather than the club minor/u18 that'd be the focus here.

That Westport side did represent Mayo in that competition last year, with a slightly surprising (for me at least) Connacht Final defeat to Oranmore-Maree (https://www.westernpeople.ie/sport/gaa/final-agony-for-westport-boys-in-connacht-thriller_arid-76234.html).

@Richie duck: Wouldn't know nearly as many of the Castlebar lads to break them into u17 vs u18 (only the 2 county minors that played & the 3rd that missed this game from '25 or the 1 member of this years minors who'll still be underage next year), but at least 6 of the Westport starting lads that'll still be u18 next year. Including a few of the most likely candidates for man of the match.

Unreal performance by Westport Minors. So few of them unfortunately will go on to play senior due to the sheer numbers of players coming through every year in Westport St. Patrick's. Aughagower probably need to split away to form their own club at this stage for the betterment of both the players and Mayo GAA in general.

Oh the joys...some poor Rossie spent a fortune getting an EP ticket, the tent, and everything that comes with it... Got soaked wet, and was in the middle of the crowd at the main stage and couldn't move anywhere....and the Mayo team comes out and starts singing the Green and Red . My life is now complete.

Savage Minor team for Westport alright. Great skill and physical power all over the field. Castlebar had beaten them in the league final so cant be a bad team but nothing worked for them on Saturday night, Westport were better in every single position on the pitch. Of the staring 15 for each team, Westport have 6 underage again next year and Castlebar have 10 underage again. Westport also had nearly 20 subs named, they had a b team this year in minor, Castlebar had 7 or 8 subs.

Catcol says:

No, not a bridge too far. It’s perfect.

Just think back - say Late April, and you tell a friend you’ve got a ticket for the EP. S/he says I see the Saw Doctors are gigging there; wouldn’t it be some craic if Mayo won the All Ireland, the Saw Doctors were belting out the Green and Red, and the Mayo team bounded onto the stage to sing it with them?

Afraid it's just you, JoeyJ! I can't get enough of these celebrations. Spent so many years dreaming about what it would be like, but I don't think my imaginings ever really went past the day itself in Croke Park, let alone the six weeks afterwards. This is food for the soul.

Paddyjoejohntom, bad enough being from Roscommon in the middle of that, but I'd say it was ten times worse being from Galway and watching Eoin McGreal lead the charge down the catwalk for the N17!

Roll on the weekend in Castlebar. I suspect the lads might be conspicuous by their absence in the TF due to the club championship ... but you just never know!

Its not half far enough Joey I was very disapointed this weekend that Jon Bon Jovi of the Belmullet Bon Jovi's wasnt decked out in a Mayo jersey singing a medley of green and red blacksod bay and a song about Gina and Tommy struggling to get tickets for the final with Ryan O Donoghue and half the Mayo team and Sam beside him

T

Tubberman says:

August 31, 2026 at 5:13 pm

Very true Anne Marie. In my dreaming over the last few years and decades(!) my imaginings were always about how I'd react at the moment of the full time whistle (or hooter) and when the Mayo captain would raise Sam aloft.

I never thought that the joy could extend for this long, and be so satisfying far beyond the initial elation.

I'll be following that Nobel Prize announcements in early October and Ryan O'Donohue to get the nod for the new, especially created category called "Everything".
Failing that a good showing at the Oscars next spring will be sufficient.
