Andy’s appointment offers us a fresh start

Ever since the news broke last night that Andy Moran is set to be ratified soon as the new Mayo manager there’s been a discernible shift in mood among supporters. That’s if the mood here on the blog is a reasonable indicator of overall sentiment, which you’d have to think it is.

The last few years haven’t been happy ones for us. That’s not the fault of the previous management team, whose desire to be successful was no different to the wishes of supporters. But, for a variety of reasons, things didn’t work out for Kevin McStay and his colleagues as they would have hoped and it’s now time for a new direction.

As I mentioned on the pod we recorded last night just after the announcement was made, the first inkling I got of Andy Moran’s potential leadership talent came way back in 2009. I was at a challenge game we played against Dublin that night out in Portmarnock and, with only a few hundred there, the players’ shouts on the pitch were clearly audible to those of us watching on.

I was struck that night at just how vocal Andy was. Operating at half-back, he was organising the defence while also issuing instructions and giving encouragement to those further forward. He was very much the on-field general.

Now, sixteen years later, he’s the new Mayo manager.

Some may argue this has come too soon. Andy, however, already has three years as an inter-county manager under his belt, experience augmented by a year as a highly-regarded coach with Monaghan, who performed well under the new rules this summer.

It’s also the case that opportunities sometimes have to be grasped when they present themselves. Was James Horan – at 38 years of age – ready for the Mayo job when the chance to get it opened up for him in late 2010? Andy’s now a few years older than James was then. He’s well ready for this.

It’s exciting too that Colm Boyle is going in with him.

We’re absolutely gutted to be losing Boyler from the podcast but we know that we were so lucky to have someone with such an outsized football brain with us over the last while and that his talents were crying out to be applied within an inter-county environment. He leaves the pod with every good wish from us.

As I noted on the show last night, seeing Andy – with Boyler riding shotgun – take the reins really does feel like a passing-of-the-torch moment. Both lads were key members of the best Mayo team in decades and they know what’s required to get us back challenging for major honours in the way that the team they were part of did for the best part of a decade.

Adding Paddy Tally to the ticket is a smart move as well. The Down native knows so much about the inter-county scene and knows plenty too about what it takes to climb the summit. His input will be invaluable.

It’s great too to see a sense of excitement and anticipation among supporters in the wake of last night’s announcement. Following Mayo has, for many of us, felt like a bit of a chore in recent years and we all need a lift. If there’s any man capable of providing that, it’s Andy Moran.

That said, fans will need to be patient. Talk of competing for Sam next summer is foolish. There’s an amount of groundwork to be put in first but once this is done – and be in no doubt that it will – then our capability to be back challenging seriously will be greatly enhanced.

This moment, not unlike when James Horan was handed the job fifteen years ago, feels like an important turning in the road for us. While I’m now at an age where it’s not advisable to be wishing time away, I’m hardly alone in thinking that I really can’t wait for next year to come around.

All in this together again – wouldn’t it be just great if we were? The best of luck to Andy and his colleagues as they take on what’s a huge challenge but a great opportunity too.

Best of luck to Andy and the new management team. They have a tough job ahead of them for sure. But you know, bad and all as the results were this year, especially the brutal loss to Cavan, I think the last two results gives them something to work on. The Tyrone and Donegal matches were basically our only two all Ireland knockout matches this year. We gave Tyrone a fair beating and were somewhat unlucky to lose by a point to Donegal, and this after losing 3 important players to injury during the second half. Hopefully, they can find a few new players, especially in midfield and forwards and can embrace the new rules and build a team that can challenge for honours over the next few years.

Funny enough, I was also there that night in Portmarnock that you mentioned and I actually came to the very same conclusion. I just checked back and found I had posted here afterwards of how he was a very vocal leader. When my young lad approached him for an autograph after he had been subbed off that night, not content with just scribbling his name, he actually rounded up all the bench to insist they sign as well. It really struck me at the time that he went the extra mile for a young lad that he didn’t know from Adam.

I really want to wish him well and hope he gets all the time and support he needs from the Mayo public and the county board.

Best of luck to Andy and his backroom team. There’s no doubt this is the job Andy desperately wanted and he now gets his opportunity. I would have preferred a more experienced appointment to be honest but the decision has been made and so be it. I’m happy to see Boyle and Tally on the ticket, and I’ve no doubt there’ll be further additions. It’ll be interesting to see if Andy appoints someone in the performance psychologist role but we’ll have to wait and see. It’s certainly needed!

As others have posted this is a long term project and as supporters we are going to have to be patient. Andy has a lot of work to do to build a team that can compete again with the top teams in the country - not just in one off games but consistently over a season. It’s going to take time and I hope the supporters that are happy with his appointment now will remember that when the journey gets a bit bumpy along the way.

No disrespect to Andy but to get this role at this stage of his career show a distinct lack of confidence by Mayo. We should be looking at big name managers and thinking outside the box (e.g. Peter Keane, Donaghy, highly successful Soccer or Rugby managers, etc.,). Instead, the easy choice has been made.

We tried the nice guy approach with the last manager and that set up back years. I fear we may have the same in store this time. Anyway, time will tell and like all Mayo fans I wish for the best, but the omens are not good.

At some point, it would be great to discuss the murky world of money and management teams. There is an incredible lack of transparency in this area and it is past time to shine a light on it. It is a key part of the low-level corruption endemic in the GAA . It is really tine to get it out in the open.

TsuDhonNim you should put yourself in for player scouting. Not an exaggeration that you simply know every county capable footballer out there. Don't respond, simply as close to a fact as a a subjective opinion can be that you have something to offer in scouting out every possible player. Certainly not on management experience but the board must have their reasoning and I wish him well, we need some good times ahead. I think this will be a few years of building to get us up to speed with some of the other counties.
In the meantime, I hope Andy and staff are open minded in their thought process.
A blend of building on the strengths in the squad already whilst looking at youth and existing players across the county .
I was delighted to see Liam Irwin back on Friday .
If he can get fit he will have huge impact for Breaffy and would only be right to consider him for future panels. A great young player in his day for Mayo and could offer something different yet

The very best of luck to the new management team and I do hope that they see success.

I suppose it will be the end of the 2026 championship, and how that goes before anyone will know if it was a good, bad or great appointment. Hopefully a great appointment.

Colm seemed to have difference's and had his own opinions on how he would have gotten a different tune out of the current Mayo team over the past season or two. He will have his chance now to leave his imprint on our style of play.

I'm not sure about it taking 3 to 5 years like some people are saying, to get to where we want to be, and very doubtful the management would be left in position unless there is obvious improvements each year. Alot of people comment that year 1 is the pivotal year in a management tenure and that the initial impact of new management begins to diminish year on year after that first year.

I think their first year is critical, we need a good 2026 or I fear the timbers might begin to creak.

If we were to say, win the Connacht final and get a decent run in the championship and remain in Division 1 in the league in 2026, I think that would be a great year and this management team would be off and running.

It's all about 2026 and a good solid start.

Maybe Tsu is Colm Boyle? I’d agree that if Tsu isn’t Boyler, then Andy should be on to him, tremendous knowledge of club players.

Talk of a rebuild I think is wide of the mark, we have any amount of very good one on one defenders and half backs coming out our ears.

The job for Andy and co is two midfielders - I’d release Ruane to half forward - and for them to also find two inside forwards to play with Ryan.

Four players and we are a different team, not easy by any means but even style of play with quicker ball inside would be a start. The likes of Loftus in half forward who can score from distance but also kick pass accurately for me is a no brainer. Loftus, Ruane and Neary I’d ove to see as our half forward line and coached to have no fear, play the pass, take the shot on, don’t be afraid to take your man on.

Actually, when I think about it, it’s an easy job for the lads!

@jr, our province is Connacht, and the attitude will surely be to win every competitive match we play.
Nothing wrong with a connacht title either.
The three amigos bring a lot to the table in terms of management when you combine their talents. Boyle will be excellent with young new recruits to the panel.
I echo sentiments of other posters in saying TsuDhoNim should be included in the setup, maybe liaising between management and supporters. I think it's important to keep supporters onside. Gone are the days of dummy teams, I'd be positive about the appointment, within a few seasons we will be back having a good rattle at taking Sam over the shannon

The trend now also in soccer is managers that are essentially on the money modern coaches. Look at Keith Andrews with Brentford. Birmingham manager a coach.
I could see every Mayo player carrying a ball everywhere.
One midfielder option for a sub. Could we get Padraig Prendergast back. He was the best fielder in recent years and is never mentioned. Had injuries.

T

tirawleybaron says:

I wonder when he is going to name the full backroom team; Alan Dillon, Seamus O Shea, Cillian O Connor and the two player coaches DOC and AOS.
A wise man once said that they picked the team for an All Ireland semi before. Same man was no supporter of Kevin McStay either.
David Drake and Conor O Shea might be back yet.

But seriously, they do need to think outside the box for player recruitment.
Some of Mayos greatest were taken from nowhere onto the county panel, with little of no underage pedigree.
David Clarke was sub goalie for Ballina when he got picked for Mayo.
Ronan McGarrity played for Mayo before he played a championship for Mayo.
Lee Keegan was playing rugby when he got called up to Mayo,
Andy himself was a wing back before he was made into a forward (very successfully)

Brian Fenton, Michael Fitzsimmons, Eoghan O Gara, Denis Bastick all never played underage for their counties.
Paudie Clifford, Damien Comer, Conor McManus and Bernard Brogan are proof you can find quality forwards outside your underage ranks
Brendan Rodgers is a top quality midfielder and full back and Joe O Connor was a rugby player underage.

No doubt there are some similar players playing for the "wrong" (non senior) clubs or in the wrong positions who could do the same as the above names.
That sort of talent identification combined with serious coaching would deliver success.
It's time we found a few more diamonds disguised as coal.

R

Roco88 says:

August 13, 2025 at 12:04 am

@tirawleybaron - your point that players can bypass underage and still have incredible senior county careers is accurate but I don’t agree with some of your picks

David Clarke was a double Mayo Minor in 00 and 01 and happened to be the u21 keeper in 01 while still a minor. While he was displaced by John Healy with Ballina in 04/05, I recall he was still in around Mayo setups at the time

Lee Keegan didn’t play minor in 07 but he was u21 in 2009 and 2010.

Andy being referenced as a wing back from 2009 is correct but neglects to acknowledge his full underage career as a forward and his early days playing for Mayo as a forwards.

Brian Fenton was u21 in 2014 for Dublin, Damo Comer U21 (2013-2015) and Bernard Brogan was u21 in 2005.

As for the others I think you are correct in saying they had little to no underage careers.

Andy will decide the overall style of football that we will play. I expect Paddy Tally will be responsible for defensive structure and organization. Boyle possibly in charge of man marking and tackling, with also a strong motivational, role. Andy will most likely act as attack coach-I can't see him delegating that. I would expect another selector to be added, who should have specific responsibility for identifying and unearthing new prospects-would you be available TDN?

I would imagine Andy will be announcing another few more members to his backroom team in the coming weeks and then sit down for his '' I'm the gYaffer, I'm the boss '' spiel and divvy out each responsibility to his colleagues and let them all be getting tuned in over the run of the club championship .
Thankfully everyone has a few months now to get the groundwork done and everyone worth a shot at county level, gets a chance if they are interested.
I predict bigger crowds and greater efforts in next rounds of club games.

@Ex-pat - What has Peter Keane achieved - lost an all Ireland with Kerry, Donaghy - assistant coach but never done it on his own, a soccer or rugby manager - surely you are having a laugh.

Andy has put himself out there, achieved progress with Leitrim. Challenged himself going into a different setup and still involved in club and has a good understanding of situation at club level. And most importantly has the best interests of Mayo football at heart. With young forwards coming through it will be great to have him working with them for a couple of seasons.
Is he perfect - not at the moment but I am fully confident that the team will be in a better position at the end of his tenure than when he starts even if he ultimately fails. Its better than going with a mercenary seeking to pad out their ego in the short term/

Tirawleybaron says:

@ JP
Intercounty football wasn't always so ageist.
However, as the game moved from a catch and kick game to a handpassing game, all players are not expected to Run 10 k (in a series of sprints) in the 70 min. That amount of high intensity running is not sustainable. Even in athletics, you see older athletes move up to marathon to extend their medal winning years.

Over the past 20 years, football and hurling have turned away from your Colin Corkery types.
That same mileage (and training) meant all players had to become runners.
With schools of excellence and massive underage training, a lot of guys who make the county team at a young have two many injuries to keep going past 30 (look at the O Connor bros injury record post age of 26).
The only guys who could do the milage in their 30's would be lads who didn't have the s#!t run out of them playing on multiple teams between 17 and 22.

The reason someone like Evan Regan is still doing it at Senior Club (and Andy Moran went so long at intercounty) is that he got into sports nutrition and really looks after himself.

Not many lads in their 30's do that at the moment. That will likely change as most lads dont drink too much and are into some form of fitness challenge to keep them fit.

Michael Murphy came back to Donegal because he was so good originally it was worth it. Don't think they would have done the same with a 30 something, club footballer who never played county.

Barry Solan coming in even remotely as a strength and conditioning consultant would be absolutely gigantic for Mayo.
We've clearly gone backwards in s and c in recent years.
Solan was poached by arsenal and very impressive over in London, and since his move to Saudi Arabia they've actually suffered a record number of injuries compared to when he was the main man.
From talking to people in Ballaghaderreen he has been given more freedom and isn't as under as much pressure in Saudi Arabia compared to the intensity of being head of S and C for a multi billion pound soccer club.
Maybe he would be able to lend a hand, even if it was in a remote capacity?

There are men on bar stools in every town and village around Mayo who have desire for Mayo to be successful, that's not the barometer for measuring an outcome. Mayo's decline, with a relatively young team, that had achieved success previously was fairly daming on them.

In any event, I'm now quite positive about. him. Proper structures at the back will be vital, to prevent teams getting a run on us. You know the type of thing, three, four, five behind, then a couple of two pointers go over, and the game is gone. Tenacity around the midfield area will be vital too.

Just on SnC and age. Dya remember yer man Zanetti the world class footballer defense and midfiekd from Argentina and inter Milan. He was athletic and fast to age 40 and it was down to him focusing year round on leg strength.
So his stamina required shall breaks as his running stamina was basically that his leg strength made most the running feel super easy.
But with huge tree trunk legs based on power you can't put those muscles into the red zone for too long as you're built for explosive power.
I think on GAA we still focus too much on running for stamina. There's a big aspect of have strong legs and keep your upper body trim.
Still huge stamina but arrived at in a different way. You see a lot of the soccer players have that type of build. Zanetti or Ramos built perfect for the athletic and strength demands of Gaelic football.

All great servants to Mayo but !!!! I am sure Andy will pick what he considers the best players available. I am sure he will talk to some of the above. As always it’s the players who didn’t play who are always the best. Lots of lads who played in 2025 were fine and performed well. Sometimes we as supporters do not know the reason why players are unavailable. Best thing is to just to let him get on with the task in hand. I am sure he will do his best. I just hope he gets the bit of luck that previous management didn’t get. Losing Connacht finals by 2 points and 1 point. Conceding crucial last minute scores to Galway Dublin Derry and Donegal, all of which were extremely costly. I know you can say those things shouldn’t happen but really there are tiny margins which decide so many football games and I just hope Andy comes out on the right side of those margins

Those who have managed in similar sports at a professional level have a lot to teach us. What I find laughable is that you would jettison this in favour of "achieved progress with Leitrim"!

Surely Andy would have to pick himself and Boyler..
And no Coen….???

Andy and Boyler from the bench. They’ll watch the first half in the stand

The team I’ve picked is a mixture of the best of the current team fused with lads being called for to return..

I believe the Mayo County Board have put in place a positive Management Team. Andy was a Leader on the Field ..He now needs to lead again. 2026 is a most important season. Players like Aido, Cillian, Diarmuid are not getting any younger. If I was Andy I would get the players who left the panel last year back for 2026. Cillian, Carr, Loftus, O Hora, Liam Irwin. Fergal Boland I believe got a raw deal in the Championship. Go for it in 2026 . Mayo are not that far off the pace. Andy will play fast attacking direct Football. We have the Players in the County. We need to believe again.

Plunkett
Aidan Orme has one of the highest skillsets in the County from all the football I have seen him play over the years and one of the few accurate left footers we have and need for the 2 point game, he has got to be brought back in dont think hes as weak physically as you are making out, hes better at winning his own ball then Paul Towey or Fergal Boland and a better shooter than Tommy Conroy.
If Finbarr Roarty is good enough to play in an All Ireland Final at 19 surely Kobe has to be looked at, Colm and Andy will have a good idea from lA v B training games to know if hes able to make the step up.

I’ve heard O Hora saying that he intends to climb Everest next year. So I doubt he’ll be available for Mayo. Unless I got him wrong and he meant winning the All Ireland. 😂

Feeling optimistic about the managerial appointment. It was clear very early that Andy was primed for the Mayo job. He has high ambitions and given time, I think we will have success. No better man than Colm Boyle to have on his team, one of the bravest men ever to put on a Mayo shirt and will take no nonsense from the young pretenders id imagine. Tally will bring much experience from his time on the 2003 Tyrone winning team. No disrespect to the last management team but we never seemed to come to terms with the new rules in the championship, just as regards the 2 pointers, it never seemed to be a priority. A more youthful management team and fresh approach to the system will do no harm at all.

maybe that's where Andy should bring the whole panel for team bonding and altitude training... anyone that can't make it up and down Everest just doesn't have what it takes...

Don't want to burst the bubble, but Tally has a unique record, Derry didn't win either one league or championship game with him as manager.

Kobe is only going into leaving cert so if he didn’t play u20 last year when not doing his exams he will hardly be skipped ahead to the senior panel in his leaving cert year. Not sure if O Hora has the pace for county anymore especially if isolated in a 3 on 3 in the full back line. Kuba and Cian McHale definately worth a look.

We need to look to the future. Forget about the lads who stepped away. of course Loftus had a massive loss & just seeing back for his club is fantastic & hopefully he might like to join the fray again.

We need midfielders who can bloody win ball when it's there to be won.. and the players to be empowered to shoot & take risks as much as possible.

But we have the bones of something

N

Nephin says:

I can’t see Andy inviting many of the lads that pulled out back. Maybe Cillian, because of his quality. James Carr, because Andy was always a huge fan, but suffered a lot of injuries. Aaron McDonnell because of his age and seemed to be progressing. Then again, he might say, time to give youth a chance. He’ll probably get three years, so needs to act quickly and build the team in the one.

All this talk of Andy getting players not on last season's panel back, I expect Andy will start with a clean slate, factor in form and fitness in the Club Championship and check on players availability, i. e, do they want to play for the county? If fit and showing good form, you can make a case for Cillian, if only as an impact sub, a fit James Carr, Michael Plunkett-the new rules suit him, with his ability to kick long range points and possibly Orme, as the newly available space would also suit him. As for other names mentioned, O'Hora maybe at a stretch, but I would find it hard to make a case for Mcdonagh or Conor McStay.

Lots of interesting suggestions for what and who Andy needs to focus on but for me it's the same wishes as I've had for the last 3 years.
A proper defensive strategy.
A meaningful attacking system.
A left footed free taker.
Forwards in the forwards.
And one new one. The desire to embrace the new rules.
Other than that just entertaining, winning football and a couple of All Irelands. Surely not too much to ask!

It’s as much about the team a manager builds around him. I’ve been in a dressing room where the manager himself tactically wouldn’t have been great but had great coaches and readers of the game around him. On the flip side he was excellent at team talks, communication and motivating a team.

I've taken trip down memory lane, watched the final vs the Dubs in 2013, very interesting watch in terms of how the FRC came up with the new rulebook. Dubs killed us on accurate long ball play(great when it comes off). But then the God's of YouTube then recommend an old football pod. I'd request for every fan to listen to any one of those Andy was part of. He is not only a lover of the game, but also a student and a historian. Knowing his and Colms knowledge of Mayo club football, how about we just trust their judgement and back them for at least the next season

I was watching back some of the old podcasts with Andy, Tommy Rooney and Paddy Andrews on YouTube. They often talked about the art of kicking, two-footed players and the value of real, skillful forwards.

Whatever about our chances of winning All-Irelands our forward play will be alot more exciting to watch, I think Andy’s team will be built around ballers first and athletes second. We could finally see left-footers playing in the 10 and 13 positions, a strong left-footed free-taker, and three natural scoring forwards in the full-forward line. The half-backs might focus less on carrying the ball and more on hitting accurate kick passes inside.
Under Rochford and McStay, that kind of football wasn’t always a priority. It will be exciting to see who he picks in his six starting forwards for the championship, and who gets a chance during the League.

PaddyJoeThornton, I wouldn't think so and hope not. They only Kids, minor at U17 now is nearly to young for to be showing on TV/streams. Most those kids will not get close to senior so let them enjoy it without pressure.

What was the make up of the interview/MAC panel in the end was it announced yet?

Sean Burke, thanks for Andy Moran's comments, he's very enthusiastic & raring to go which is great to see. They have time to figure out who they will choose for their large panel before they decide on the real players that are very focused on what they have to be prepared to do for Mayo football. That's what Andy Moran, colm Boyle & Paddy Tally will bring, get the best of the best & bring them to the top & play to the highest standards, with 100% effort in every game. Here's hoping for great days ahead with Mayo GAA.
